One of my favorite comments I'm at Vito getting killed clip was Phil: okay you guys stand over there I'm going to go hide in the closet and be a metaphor
Kind of offense to call him that as a narrator. Not that the characters didn't try call him similar things...but the narrator using ass munched is just off. Not funny either.
Phil definitely shined every box he saw in the joint. In his block, they used to call him "The Shah of the Can", cause if he caught you alone in the bathroom, there was nothing he couldn't take from you.
I never bought the gay theory either. I always thought Phil's obsession with Vito was just an extension of his grudge against the New Jersey crew over Tony B killing Phil's brother and Phil being prevented from getting revenge against Tony B. Phil was looking for an excuse to hurt a member of Tony's crew and the Vito situation provided the perfect smokescreen.
I think the idea of a Phil/Vito relationships is a bit of a stretch however there is a enough evidence to at least suspect Phil was in the closet. First of homophobia is almost always linked to repressed homosexuality and Phil was *hyper* homophobic. Second, Phil had a constant tendency to link his 20 year prison term to masculinity, which in one scene Butch reinforces as a way to make Phil feel better about himself. The you have the cinemotography outlined in other videos. Phil with his pants off while talking about Vito his wife, the Lou Costello statue. On and on. In my personal experience the biggest homophobe in the room is almost always sweet as all fuck inside, I'd say about 99% of the time. So....
They wouldn't consider crying for a brother gunned down at a relatively young age something to be ashamed of, but either way they're all hypocrites anyway
I think people make too big of a deal about Phil coming out of the closet. I think he just did it to mess with Vito. I doubt he was hiding in there all day too.

The way a lot of gangsters justify homosexuality in prison is that whatever they did in prison, stays in prison. They don't have to answer for that. But once they get back out into the real world, they can't engage in that kind of lifestyle. Even when they find out about Vito, there's discussion over whether he was pitching or catching. Tony cared about money more than anything and Vito didn't really violate any of his rules (unlike Ralph who probably killed the horse, killed his young goomah at The Bing, etc) so he kind of wanted to give him a pass. Even Phil was sort of wrestling with it until his wife got Holier Than Thou with him about Vito. In general, The Sopranos is always challenging Old School mafia rules. Yeah, once he's in his own bed with his socks off, he's like "I traded one prison for another" as his wife drones on about Vito. He'd never condone it, but he seemed like he was starting to get tired of the subject while his wife was basically trying to make him feel like it was his concern. I have literally never heard a fan of this show bring this up until now. And damn, you guys may be onto something here. Never crossed my mind until now. Could be. But I don't think so - he's just old school and not at all uncommon to see from any man in his generation or any generation over forty today.
The Phil/Tony problem was more than just Phil whacking Vito. Tony's cousin Tony B killed Phil's brother and Tony took out Tony B before Phil could. That was more of a cause for friction than Vito was.
I think Phil did compromise with men in the can and that's why he's so embittered about his experience in prison - it opened up a repressed side of his sexuality that he's conflicted and self-loathing about. Vito's homosexuality only brought out that bitterness in a way that was very painful and enraging for Phil.
I get what you're saying, but I don't think so in this case- When I was in high school , I had a classmate who was "different" I knew this person since 3rd grade and he never bothered anyone- I was in high school around 85 or86 and a group of guys, some of them football players were in the cafeteria throwing spitballs at him- I don't know why but I got so pissed i told him to sit with me - I went over to them and I basically told em the only reason they are doing this shit is because they have tendencies of their own - I'm not exactly the biggest person, and they weren't exactly small but i rode quarter horses every day and I've never been scared of any human- (i was born with a cleft pallet and before surgeries i endured similar situations) i called them a bunch of pitiful mother fuckers and to pic on me if they wanted to- unbeknownst to me, Mr Richardson ,the phsycology teacher observed this - the next yr i was accepted into the phsycology class even though it was only for the top of the academics- I didn't know- I just thought I was lucky- I remembered at some point the attitude of some of my smarter classmates changed - didn't think about it at the time- 10 yrs later at a funeral for a fellow student , the person who was like a valedictorian came up to me- seems that one day I was absent from class and they asked Mr R how did david rice get in? I was told that Mr Richardson had been waiting for this question and proceeded to recount the incident- telling them " he may be an average at best student, but this young man put on a clinical demonstration that day- even calling out one of the football players in the class- I never knew - but I would have taken an ass wuppin because right is right and they were not I went to my truck and cried my eyeballs out-

The writers, and episode directors, did all they could to enable even the least discerning viewer to see that Phil Leotardo was an angry and embittered closeted homosexual.

I wondered if he was a self loathing gay after the Veto death. There’s no way it was a coincidence that HE LITERALLY CAME OUT OF THE CLOSET before killing Veto.
Perhaps Phil had an unfortunate encounter in the showers whilst in Prison? Or perhaps he just found physical affection where he could find it whilst in Prison? Both would also explain his hatred of Vito... although it could just be that Vito was married to Phil's sister so had condemned his sister to a sham marriage?
I really like your analysis. I agree. When you are taught from an early age to be disgusted by certain behavior no matter what it is, more times THAN NOT, you will internalize those very sentiments. Phil was "that kind of guy" that probably internalized EVERYTHING he was taught to hate and despise. It represents everything you believe "to be wrong with the world". People spend millions of bucks going to therapy to undo some of that conditioning because much of it conflicts with one's ability to be a decent human being. But you have to admit, that scene with Phil coming out of the closet, was total "red meat" for that trope which is unfortunately way more popular than it ever should be. I'm guessing someone along the way of producing the show really wanted it in there to give power to that idea. I can remember being in the 3rd grade when my older brother successfully taught me to HATE the loops that were sewn into the backs of button-down shirts. We all tore them out whenever seen, often ripping a hole in the shirt. It was so arbitrary. People HATE certain hairstyles for instance. Just go get yourself a MULLET next time, and see how much abuse will be heaped upon you. One specific day (I don't know how) our entire culture turned against that beloved hairstyle once rocked by POP STARS and Hockey Players.... and Billy Ray Cyrus. heh heh. With all that in mind, homophobia is no mystery.
The Shah of Iran was too tall to fit comfortably in that closet & wait for Vito - look how low the bar is 5:21 , and it's not like there is any room between the clothes and the door. Kids hide in closets like that one - adults hide in walk-in closets. For the amount of bitching that Phil does about "20 years in the can" he is clearly not going to voluntarily jail himself in a dark closet and wait. CineRanter should have picked up on this.
exactly, like I mentioned in a comment it was the symbolism that these old school guys loved the most. Phil coming out of the closet, symbolized they know his secrete and there's no where to hide anymore.
A guy like Phil that is old school to the core would rather drink an entire bottle of ammonia that switch teams. His hatred and bitterness was the fuel that kept him going.
Phil is really obviously dealing with repressed feelings of attraction towards other men. Absolutely nothing else explains his actions, and it’s frankly absurd for you to simply dismiss the copious evidence and symbolism supporting this. I guess when Tony was riding his horse in the kitchen in that dream sequence and Carm told him he can’t keep his “horse” in the house, that scene was simply about Tony wanting to keep a pet horse at home, right? I could see you making that argument after watching this video.

The brother. Whatever happened there.
That deal where Phil grabs the mattress, right before they beat Vito to death. Made me think he was either gay, or got off on violence. Or both
BEAT me to it! 👍
Seemed like he was just very satisfied that he finally got his hands on vito. No homo 💀
And he literally came out of a closet right before that.
4:31 . . . the sacred and the propane . . .
My name is Hank Hill. I tell you what - I sell propane and propane accessories!
I think Phil did compromise with men in the can and that's why he's so embittered about his experience in prison - it opened up a repressed side of his sexuality that he's conflicted and self-loathing about. Vito's homosexuality only brought out that bitterness in a way that was very painful and enraging for Phil.
The whole time he was in the joint, Phill remained faithful to Kleenex and don't youse firget it.
Phil was a hero who lived in the past. True hero. R. I. P
Tony beat Phil’s ass when he owed him money for the race track sale. But nothing was ever said.
Literally coming out the closet and constant references to his time inside would suggest yes.
I get what you're saying, but I don't think so in this case-
When I was in high school , I had a classmate who was "different"
I knew this person since 3rd grade and he never bothered anyone- I was in high school around 85 or86 and a group of guys, some of them football players were in the cafeteria throwing spitballs at him- I don't know why but I got so pissed i told him to sit with me - I went over to them and I basically told em the only reason they are doing this shit is because they have tendencies of their own - I'm not exactly the biggest person, and they weren't exactly small but i rode quarter horses every day and I've never been scared of any human- (i was born with a cleft pallet and before surgeries i endured similar situations) i called them a bunch of pitiful mother fuckers and to pic on me if they wanted to- unbeknownst to me, Mr Richardson ,the phsycology teacher observed this - the next yr i was accepted into the phsycology class even though it was only for the top of the academics- I didn't know- I just thought I was lucky- I remembered at some point the attitude of some of my smarter classmates changed - didn't think about it at the time- 10 yrs later at a funeral for a fellow student , the person who was like a valedictorian came up to me- seems that one day I was absent from class and they asked Mr R how did david rice get in? I was told that Mr Richardson had been waiting for this question and proceeded to recount the incident- telling them " he may be an average at best student, but this young man put on a clinical demonstration that day- even calling out one of the football players in the class- I never knew - but I would have taken an ass wuppin because right is right and they were not
I went to my truck and cried my eyeballs out-
@@davidrice3337 That was a noble act man, well done. It's always good to hear about people doing the right thing, back when things were tough for some of us
Plot twist: Phil whacked Vito so he could have Johnny Cakes all to himself
I don't think Phil is outright gay. But I think it's likely he screwed around with men while in prison and the memory is shameful to him. Especially so for someone so old-school like him. Along with the fear it may become publicly known and held against him.
I also just think Phil don't like homosexuality outright and think free men doing it are a disgrace he said and he can't control his hatred.
The writers, and episode directors, did all they could to enable even the least discerning viewer to see that Phil Leotardo was an angry and embittered closeted homosexual.
Come out of the closet? Phil wouldn't even come out of the house. He would speak through the top floor window tho 🤣
"…The sacred and the propane…" :) 4:33
One of the most iconic characters, and he came up on season 5. Impressive
Hang on, what ?!
Nobody ever told me that Phil Leotardo did 20 years in prison.
I disagree, he is from an old school world. And if you noticed his wife kept on bothering him, she was the one pulling the strings.
Yep
That is the old school world bud.
There are plenty of self-hating gays in the "old school world".
leave ms patty alone
Phil did 20 years in the can?!?! WHY DIDN'T THE SHOW SAY THIS!!!!
How many years did Phil do in prison he never seemed to say as far as I remember?
20 years..... Phill says it when they're watching Johnny sack on TV give his testimony in court
@@Briank0912 sarcasm
Then it's not good sarcasm. It's not something he goes on about. I only recall him saying the actual number of years once
@@Briank0912 yeah honestly idk why people make this joke so much. He just said 20 years a few times, not much. I still find it kind of funny, guess I need a rewatch
@@Briank0912 He says it all the time. Every day he wakes up and says "20 years in the can, and now I'm a free man"
If you're doing more than five years, you get a pass.
Phil Gay? ..Nahh I've known him all my life! he was Anonymous AA Member, loved RAD- iator grilled cheese & musical Jersey Boys (musta seen it 5x with his Guma).
Finally someone else noticed how he weirdly pronounced radiator!! Lol
You forgot how he went through so many tissues while in the can . . .
“This CineRanter, he’s more creative than Spielberg!”
even shoving a pool cue up his shinebox
If he would have just eaten that breadstick he wouldn't have been so emotional.
I wondered if he was a self loathing gay after the Veto death. There’s no way it was a coincidence that HE LITERALLY CAME OUT OF THE CLOSET before killing Veto.
I heard he made egg sandwiches off of a hot plate while doing 14 years in the peace core
Open video, pause, open comments, “no”, dislike video, close video
The showrunner confirmed he was repressing his own sexual feelings for men. Anyway, 4$ a pound.
The Sha of Iran would never do that😂
Shah**
As long as he quit, before he got out, he wasn't gay, it was just a hustle.
I'm miss hearing this guy saying... "Martin Scorsese's "The Irishman".
He wasn't gay. He loved Vito like a brother-in-law.
Phil is the Spinosaurus of the Sopranos franchise. Always unreasonably angry and raging
A.) That was the movies...
"...ate grilled cheese off the raddy-ate-uh."
He was pretty upset when the bodybuilders were posing on his television.
It was a loud distraction at an inappropriate time
Real reason he was so angry was because vito was cheating on him😂
Perhaps Phil had an unfortunate encounter in the showers whilst in Prison? Or perhaps he just found physical affection where he could find it whilst in Prison? Both would also explain his hatred of Vito... although it could just be that Vito was married to Phil's sister so had condemned his sister to a sham marriage?
Vito is married to his second cousin.
David Chase confirmed it, he was gay.
I know vitos bottom was impacted
Vito: uncle philly! My ass!
One of the most asked questions?
I've literally never wondered if Phil was gay
He was definitely a booty bandit or the victim of a booty bandit to have that much anger.
And the mullets made a come back
The mullets are ok. Its those broccoli haircuts that gotta go. Shaved sides and big curly mops on top.
My question is: Was the pool cue chalked or not?
The Shah of Iran was too tall to fit comfortably in that closet & wait for Vito - look how low the bar is 5:21 , and it's not like there is any room between the clothes and the door. Kids hide in closets like that one - adults hide in walk-in closets. For the amount of bitching that Phil does about "20 years in the can" he is clearly not going to voluntarily jail himself in a dark closet and wait. CineRanter should have picked up on this.
This was both sacred and propane
I believe Phil came out of the closet on purpose to mock Vito.
exactly, like I mentioned in a comment it was the symbolism that these old school guys loved the most.
Phil coming out of the closet, symbolized they know his secrete and there's no where to hide anymore.
The real question is was phil catching or pitching
No way..if he was he never would have had Vito killed so savagely
this is why you feel the guilt in him gripping the bed sheets.
A guy like Phil that is old school to the core would rather drink an entire bottle of ammonia that switch teams. His hatred and bitterness was the fuel that kept him going.
Phil got 20 years in the can
You could hear his can rattling on set it was that vast...
Like throwing a banana up Broadway
I heard Phil rammed a discman up Crissys moms box...
I like Phil. One of my favourite characters.
Tony's line written by Hollywood writers that mobsters get a pass for homosexuality is just That Hollywood bulllst! Gets a pass from WHO?
I like the style of the narrator. It's like he's forced to read in elementary school and is excited to use the naughty words XD
I always laughed when he came out of the closet before the beating
so Phil was not complaining about spending 20 years in the can after all
If Philly was around he'd tell you a couple of 3 things
He did 20 years in the can
Mobsters didnt get a pass for homosexuality in prison. Tony was telling dr milfy she gets a pass for presuming it
Oh shit
No he wasn't.
He was for sure a finnochio, no straight dude gets that mad at someone being gay. He's covering for something.
Vito a Captain? Right. The good ship lolipop
