    I do think you're overthinking this one. He's a middle aged man in a very stressful marriage. She is a beautiful younger woman who pays him some positive attention. Carmella is critical of every aspect of Tony's life and behavior while Adrianna looks at him with awe. So he got infatuated and fantasized about running away with her. He never consciously acknowledged his children because if he did, it would have instantly ruined the daydream. And a daydream is all it was. He just had a crush.

    • @PhilospherStoned
      @PhilospherStoned 2 года назад +8

      i don’t think there can be such a thing or at least the threshold for “overthinking” is so high given the Sopranos is a show that causes you to think at times, especially when Tony is introduced to new information regarding his own deeper issues. i think the vid was pretty good but again, that’s probably just me cause i like thinking more about what’s been given with a show like The Sopranos.

    Tony said the same thing about Charmaine. This like from him didn’t strike me as weird at all. It’s actually right on par with Tony constantly projecting that his current situation is a reflection of his romantic choices rather than an emotional and moral deficit. I think this also demonstrates his view of Christopher as a man in Tony’s eyes. There is a fundamental lack of respect for both Chris and (for much more valid reasons) Ralph. He can take both of their women with little internal conflict.

    • @Nystariii

    • @bradhorowitz2765

      The difference is the Charm was a grown woman he slept with ba k in high school. Adrianna is someone with daddy issues and who Tony has a father/uncle relationship, she is also MUCH younger than Charm or Carmela. Also she IS related by blood to Carmela. It is technically incest within the extended family. It is down right creepy by tony, and note that he entertained leaving his fmaily for someone who is like a niece to him.

    • @shanellb.197
      @shanellb.197 2 года назад +12

      @@Nystariii I think we as the audience are supposed to see Artie as a big impotent, but I’m not sure if Tony sees him that way. I think I’m many ways Tony is a bit envious of the simplicity of Artie’s life. Since Charmaine gave Tony the boot in high school, I think he already knows she’s no Carmela and wouldn’t put up with his shit. Hell, she didn’t even tolerate Artie’s shenanigans.

Melfi i think is quite naive and willing to go along with tony's lies;i actually believe that melfi let tony go in the final season not because she realized tony manipulated her as so much that she was humiliated by a peer for having crime boss as a client. recall that she thought tony NOT having sex with adrianna was a good deed-except she should have prodded about the incident more (tony was lying to her, whch melfi should have known-tony has said he cant be 100 percent honest with her due to his "job") and for a man to EVeN have those thoughts is alarming.

But like most middle aged men he's wondering what if I could have a do-over? We all have fantasies and like Tony with Carmella think up reasons not to do it. Ultimately Tony wants to get away from the stress and responsibility and his own issues, Adrianna is just the face he gave his dream but in reality he'd turn on her when life again doesn't go his way.

    This is weird, but this is a "normal" weird thought - at least for someone like Tony.
    Tony isn't young. He looks at Christopher as a younger version of himself. He looks at Adrianna as the kind of girl he'd be with.
    Her apparent attraction to him is a boost to his esteem. It suggests he can still get "the kind of girl" he could get as a young man. He knows that's not strictly true. But he fantasies about getting away from his responsibilities and starting again. This time, he'd do it right.
    Adrianna comes to represent this silly fantasy.
    His excuses seem bizzare. Getting rinsed in the divorce? Yes, this seems like a ridiculous excuse. But in reality, it's just an example of Tony starting to think of reality. He knows the reality is that he can't go back in time. He's not a young man. He can't start over. What he said was just childish. He's like a small 12 year old boasting to his friends that he could be the biggest kid in class in a fight. He believes the statement when he starts the sentence, starts to realise he's being ridiculous towards the end of the sentence. Then doubles down on the statement when his friends express doubt, but comes up with an excuse not to fight the kid.
    "Duncan thinks he's so tough, but I could take him! I'd kick his butt!"
    "What? Really?""
    "Of course I could. He's not so tough. But his sister is hot, and she'd hate me afterwards".
    Tony's conversation is just a combination of a humble brag, some virtue signalling, getting overexcited about a compliment, fantasising about regaining his youth, then rapidly coming up with a rationalisation for not doing it in a way that avoids admitting that his fantasy was ridiculous - in order to avoid interrogating the idea further as a means of avoiding losing face.
    It's all very silly, but very human.

    I feel like tony becomes more sympathetic and understanding after he got shot , way more than he wants the others to know , but regardless , in a business sense , he becomes more depraved and pragmatic and cold hearted

    This video makes me think back to Christopher’s sexually charged nightmare when Adriana turned into Carmela.
    In my dreams people turn into other people all the time. The sopranos is the only show or movie I’ve watched that accurately reflects the randomness of dreams

    I'd say that running away with Ade is probably just a day dream that he entertains for a small moment in conversation with Melfi. After all, therapy is where he can just think out loud and express ideas and feelings that he is not necessarily serious about. As I think you've shown in the video, he clearly hasn't begun to think it through, e.g. what about AJ and Meadow etc.

    yeah i always felt it was pretty obvious adriana was willing to do anything for chrissi and that she was just willing to go along with whatever Tony said because 1) he's the boss🫣 and 2) the feds were in her ear telling her to help herself.
    which is clearly what she wanted and implied she was trying to do. help the feds get to tony. so that they he can get out of the life.
    i actually think theres some merit to that theory and how it is played in contrast to tony who feels he could just runaway with ade.

    Probably the best episode on the show. The event that changed everything, the no retourn line.
    I always interpretated Sopranos as a show that's presented from Toni's point of view, so Carmela, even tho very atractive for many fans, is never presented as a "hot" character in the show, and even in her sex scenes with Tony, I could feel some sad/awkard vives, like Tony was forcing himself to like her.
    Meanwhile, the show goes all the way to depict Adraina as a hot, sexual, atractive girl, wich leads me to belive that all along, instead of Melfi, Tony's secret crush was Adriana. He always defended her with Cristofer, told him to keep her around, allowed her to hang around his inner circle and felt distressed when she died.
    Tony is a very proud man so he probably never admited this to himself, but I always felt like he was jelous of Cristofer, who's young, brave and liked, thus, begin the possesive man that he is, he would always desire to take his woman.
    It's a tension that was there from the very begining, but buttled up, and ultimately, it became the conflict that set all of the events from the final episodes in motion, the "weak link" of the New Jersey family.

    I think it's just ego. Tony thinks he can have literally anyone he wants. Plus Tony is sad, and is tired of his life. It's a day dream. You can think about stuff in real world terms and still know it's a fantasy. But yeah I get what you mean.

    Holy smokes, man! Overthinking it or not, this is pretty damn effing cool and in-depth analysis! Well done!
    When you mentioned Ade catching, not pitching, I immediately though of Chris's dream (dreams in general, being - among other things - about insecurities). I'm referring to the dream where "in the Czech Republic too, they love pork!" and he sees Ade uhmm... having a big fat sausage. After the crash, the feds, hearing the gossip, even make fun Tony's weight. And apparently, the gossip among the ranks wouldn't have even been that far-fetched, if Phil wouldn't have, without intent, put a stop to it just in time.

    The timing of this vid is nice cause I just watched that episode last night (doing my annual Soprano's re-watch). But I don't think running away & abandoning everything is what he was contemplating. He was thinking to just start over with a new public relationship, like his sister & Bobby. In his head, Christopher would either accept it or get dealt with. He's a boss, so everyone else will fall in line & be supportive, regardless if they agree with it or not... he knows their obedience can be counted on. Similar to how they laugh at his jokes even when he knows they're not as funny as the amount of laughter suggests.

      Never ever saw Aide running away with Tony. She's done too for Christopher. It's strange how people entertain this as if she was some tramp. She's no Skylar. Christopher was stronger, better, faster, greater, braver than Jesse. If anything Aide was trying to entrap him. Get Tony turned on or out of the way for her and Chrissy.

    • @fite1313
      @fite1313 2 года назад +1

      @@ButtersCCookie I never said Aide would agree to it. I was just saying what I think was going on in the fantasy in Tony's head. I don't know what you're trying to say when you mention Skylar & Jesse... but I will say that Aide was not that smart. She was very easy to manipulate. Her pulling anyone into her web was just unlikely. It was always the other way around. When the feds 1st approached her, most people would've said "Lawyer" immediately, and never got pulled into their web. Another example is when Matush got her to help cover up a murder... and if Tony never crashed that night with her in the car, we all know where that was going. Then final example of her being easily manipulated, believing Tony on the phone & letting Silvio come pick her up, right after admitting to Christopher that she's been working with the feds.
