I haven't shot the D100, but have D70's and D200's and others from the era just after I have a friend who wanted to get into film photography and I gave them a Nikon D70, and the only downside I could think of is that the D70 (or D100's) won't meter with the old AI/AI-S lenses, but other than that they are perfect cameras for someone who wants to start to do more serious photography!

I need this camera for my Nikon dslr collection I love the blues and greens I get from the d200 and yellow and reds I get from the d700, curios about the do.
My first DSLR was a D70 (new) same sensor. I really loved that camera. Replaced it with a D300 which was never quite the same, build and 12mp good, CEMOS colour less so. Think I’m in the market for an old CCD based shooter, perhaps a D200?
D40 CCD 6mp. Same sensor as D70 but bigger LCD screen. (but no screw drive lens motor) Get the D200 / D80 / D50 for the screw drive. Just more bulky and unnecessary otherwise. D40 is a great cheap lightweight “walk around” CCD camera. eBay 40. bucks
D100 and D70 (internally almost identical) do in fact support a maximum card size of 4GB. There is, however, a big asterisk there. Such a card must be formatted (FAT32) in a computer. The cameras stupidly will not format a card to a capacity above 2 GB. I can confirm that my D100 works fine with, and right up to the full capacity of, the 4 GB card. D200 does not have this issue.
That is an AF-D and it’s 3.3 I believe so not super fast but honestly the bees were working slow so no need to a rapid shutter or iso issues. I used AP and just got close with the lens rather than use the zoom. This is not a prime
I don't have a D100 but a couple of D200 with CCD sensor (the last one Nikon made with CCD in the DSLR line). Great cameras. Not sure about the sensor difference between the 2 though. What I know is that the D100 has the same sensor as the Epson Rd1 which sells for ~2000 dollars...
@@jd5787 - The S5 is a close cousin to the D200. Both cameras have their strengths and weaknesses, where one will outshine the other depending on what it's being used to photograph. The major minus with both the S5 Pro and the Nikon D200 is they won't work with Nikon non-DX lenses. I owned a Fuji S2 Pro first, and once I purchased a S5, began having issues with lens and camera communicating with each other to include when I purchased the Nikon D200. The S2 Pro works perfect with all of my non-DX lenses, which can be found on the used market at low to reasonable prices. Another minus for the S5 Pro is most sales, though a bit overpriced, can only be found on Ebay, while the D200 can still be found at places like Keh, Used Camera Pro, and a select number of other sites.
Yeah sorry about that ! I’ve been yelled at a bunch for that thumb nail. That camera is my Nikon f3 which I used to take pics of the D100 and have since sold. The Nikon Kodak OG has a WL VIEW FINDER with the body of the F5 and is also CCD :-)
Another nice CCD Sensor DSLR worth considering. But I am already happy with my Pentax K10D, also CCD, but even better specs and my Olympus E300 is also a fantastic CCD DSLR with one of the most filmic colours. Recently I got a Canon 5D and that's the Camera with the best retro/film feeling for me. Because it's full frame I can easily adapt a lot of fantastic glass from the analogue times.
Olympus rules them all. Olympus E-1, E-300. They are stunning. But yes a larger sensor would be nice. Though you can combine Leica glass with these cameres and you get best of both worlds. Leica contrasty rendering + amazing Olympus Kodak CCD colors. Cheers
The CCD sensor that was put into the D70, was superior to this one. D100 had the Sony ICX 413-AQ. Nikon modified this sensor and had it manufactured by Sanyo for D70. Although D100 does belong to the Pro line of Nikon cameras, and D70 does not. The cream of the bunch was the D200 which had a 10MP CCD sensor designed by Nikon and manufactured by Sony, I believe.
I find modern Nikon cameras look way better than my old D80. Must be why all those $999 cameras are only worth $100ish right now. =/ I find older CCD sensors often over saturate the colors.
If you use a small zoom into a still picture, you may find that the image has not "firmed up" WRT the WiFi and JPEG image engine in your computer. Result is that the still image never sharpens before you jump to the next picture.
Had one from new and kept it until the far superior 200 came out to be replaced by the 300 which I still have kept. Both the later cameras were far superior and gave results comparable to scanned K25 which the 100 could not. A decent try but rightly overshadowed by its better made and better performing successors which can now be bought for little more and are worth the extra. I found it disappointing.

D70 is great; I’m using now 🙃 Great CCD Sensor and I love and I love forever 😘
Agreed…. I have 4
Appreciate this review.
Thanks
The D40 and D60 10mp are good too. They're CCD but you can't get a 300dpi print bigger than 8x10 from them. If that's a restriction you're ok with get one.
Huge fan of the D40x and the D60. I’d love more focus points however , so would move folks to look at the D5100
@@robbellphotoI got my 1st 35mm when I was 13 in '73. The D60 is like the FE in digital and matrix metering. I only have 2 AFS lenses. I use a Nikkor or Voigtlander pancake on it the most but haven't plbrought it out in a few years.
i havve a 64gb cf card in my d70 right now. i have used this speciofic one for over a year now with no issues
You only need to format anything larger than 4 gb on a pc first, the camera cannot do that.
In my opinion, the Fuji S5 Pro is the best CCD digital camera ever made.
I bought the D1X, D100 and Fujifilm S-3 Pro new when they came out. I was doing wedding and portrait photography back then. I made enlargements up to 24x30 inches for clients with those cameras. Sadly the D1X died years ago and the screen died on the Fujifilm S-3 Pro (the camera still works, you just can't view the images). The D100 has a few hot pixels on the screen but works just fine. I picked up another S-3 Pro recently very cheaply off Ebay. The older CCD sensors definitely have a special look to them. :)
I’m toying with the idea of letting the D100,200,300 ,1HS , 70,80 and 90 go for the cash to get a decent D3 ….. I’m never selling my 700 …. It’s wonderful ! Great comment and thank you for watching ;-)
@@robbellphoto I've just gotten back in to photography recently after about a fifteen year break. Traded all my medium format film gear, etc. for a D700, 7100, 7200 and lenses and a Fujifilm X-T2. Having fun with photography again. :)
@@lawrencelunsford6028 now ! THATS A COLLECTION ! I did a commercial job with a 7100 this year ha and the images with some LR love were great ! Glad you’re back in the game
i recently repaired my D100 (full sensor swap from a water damaged unit i got for cheap on ebay) and i have to agree, the ccd vibes and colors are just so special, it's too bad we don't have any sort of modern ccd options
I guess the modern recipes will have to do. Honestly, the Fuji Vibes are quite fun 🤩
@@robbellphoto i've been having fun with recipes on my fujifilm, but something about them just isn't quite the same...
Nice video! The nostalgia is part of it, but the cameras of that era were really nice and a great bridge to either using more modern DSLR's and to use the film cameras that came right before it. I haven't shot the D100, but have D70's and D200's and others from the era just after
I have a friend who wanted to get into film photography and I gave them a Nikon D70, and the only downside I could think of is that the D70 (or D100's) won't meter with the old AI/AI-S lenses, but other than that they are perfect cameras for someone who wants to start to do more serious photography!
If you’ve shot the 70 …. It’s kind of the same ;-) however the 100 feels slightly higher quality. The 200 now …. That’s a beut ! It’s slightly higher in price however. I keep trying to push film onto my friends …. But know it’s a rat hole into processing debt ;-)
@@robbellphoto I might pick up a D100 - I have more than enough early Nikons, but I do like those early cameras. D2Xs is a big favorite though!
My friend wanted to start with film, and I pushed them into using the D70 first - get a good sense of photography before spending that kind of money for film and development!
I need this camera for my Nikon dslr collection I love the blues and greens I get from the d200 and yellow and reds I get from the d700, curios about the do.
I have purchased and sold 2 since this video was made ! They’re everywhere for sure
I have a D3 and it’s awesome.
Excellent vidéo I just bought one with 35-70 nikkor 🎉
My first DSLR was a D70 (new) same sensor. I really loved that camera. Replaced it with a D300 which was never quite the same, build and 12mp good, CEMOS colour less so. Think I’m in the market for an old CCD based shooter, perhaps a D200?
The D200 is a champ for sure ! If you can spring g for it … get the 700 …. Or , the D90
D40 CCD 6mp. Same sensor as D70 but bigger LCD screen. (but no screw drive lens motor)
Get the D200 / D80 / D50 for the screw drive.
D200 does not have this issue.
i have a 64gb cf card in my d70s right now and have used it for over a year now with no issues..
They changed the internal ppop up flash on the d70. I have problems using it with the ais lens, seems to want an af signal to flash.
Showing you working on a raw file getting a modern profile look would have kept me watching. Even if you opened it in photoshop.
Rob. Nice vid. Thanks!
what lens did you use to take the photos of the bees? AF-D or AF 3.3 or 2.8? Thx
The D100 can be picked up for no money AND does the job …. It’s slower than dirt but man I love it lol thanks for the comment
@@robbellphoto the D200 is damn cheap too 😉. Chek out the S5 Pro if you have a chance one of these days. D200 body with Fuji take on a CCD sensor.
@@jd5787 -
The S5 is a close cousin to the D200.
Ok but what’s the waist shooter in the thumb
Did you get the Canon 5D classic ?
@@robbellphoto yes I did. A phantastic camera.
Olympus rules them all. Olympus E-1, E-300. They are stunning. But yes a larger sensor would be nice. Though you can combine Leica glass with these cameres and you get best of both worlds. Leica contrasty rendering + amazing Olympus Kodak CCD colors. Cheers
Nothing can match Olympus e-1 and his amazing Kodak senzor...the original 5D is also nice but in a different way....
I love this level of input from viewers! Thank you so so much ! I just sold my D200 …. But kept the D70s
D 100 is a great ccd camera.
i used a D100 in the early 2000's. I wasn't impressed. The D200 is so much better in every resprct: IQ, build, ergonomics.
The D100 was revolutionary for its time.
I think the D80 is the best. 🙂
i have 2 x D80 (one infrared modified and one normal) ;-)
I am always suprised to find people who wish they were oh merry cans
;-)
I'm still waiting to see the camera pictured in the thumbnail for this video.
That’s the Nikon F3 ! Used for a great top down view finder shot
Agreed ! I feel like the 100 was a great start to the Nikon digital legacy for sure
Got one in excellent condition for 65.00.
Already owning D70 and D200 tell me I don't need this D100 ! : )
The 200 has you covered …… BUT ! the 100 colour rendition is weirdly interesting direct from camera …. It’s slow, as a lethargic camel , but ….. ok yes get one ;-) ! Ask Santa for one
@@robbellphoto Ok then.. Will do.. But can I keep the Canon D5 on the list too ? If you say yes.. would you mind explaining to the missus why both are necessary... :)
@@sergeantcrow lol you’re on your own there

A free place to married. 😂 Yes, no point spending a fortune. It ages like sour milk anyway
my D40 dont have single pin flash inhibitor it shoots flash over synch speed
Love my D40 / 50mm 1.8g Super small and light. 6MP CCD.
Keep it small. Don’t mess with zooms. Just use the tiny primes.
Nikkor 50 1.8g
Nikkor 35 1.8 dx
24mm f/2.8 lens?
Nah , this was a 35mm and the kit lens from back int he day , the 30-70 I think, it’s pretty slow but it’s fine for this type of shooting , I mean I’m not concerned about sharp images just the feel of the old school vibes!
The D200 beats it and the fujifilm s5 pro
I mean just go to the d700, you get everything all at once.
For $200 more :-(
Buuuutt I totally did it
You don’t get ccd sensor with the d700
@@morgankarno7335 CORRECT CMOS :-( My fraudulent slip…. I guess when I see such colors on an classic I think CCD …. Thanks for the pointer for sure ;-) ! The D300 , same thing but the 300 colors do not feel as warm / cool as the 700
The D200 was a much better camera. D100 uses the earlier TTL system.
The D100 is just a little bit more iconic in my opinion.
Maybe I'm missing something, but the test shots you showed were soft. I don't think a single one carried any kind of useful focus to the finished shot. No wonder they are cheap as chips.
I waited for the D200 so I could use my ai mf lenses and meter
I've heard the D200 is great for those lenses.
yes, but d70s is also as good w/ the same sensor cheers
Right ;-) and the 70 goes for less than 10 bucks lol
BUT …. The D100 is in a different class for sure …. Hold them both , I just did… the 100 feels like a Mercedes… the 70 like a …. Toyota
Question …. Have you tried the D80 …. I bought one but it’s faulty :-( just wanna see if it’s as good as the 100
MY GOODNESS ! I bought the D80 twice and it’s been faulty ? Error message ?! TWICE ! Imma give it a miss as I’ve been burned .
Listen …. Side note…. Just got a FujiFilm XT-10 ….. it destroys all of my CCD DSLRs for vibes and usability , I’m obsessed …. But it was $400 and $300 for the lens :-(
The D80 is fantastic. Sorry you guys got dead ones. I got a dead D50.
If anything the d70 is better
The d100 has the 10 zone matrix meter from the N80 and f100
The d70 has the 1005 pixel rgb meter that was introduced with the f5
The d100 shutter tops out at 1/4000 the d70 goes to 1/8000
D100 uses d-ttl d70 uses the newer i-ttl for flash... D-ttl has limits on flash compatability... Just a handful of nikon flashes and to my knowledge no third party support d-ttl
D100 has few things over the d70... Some boosted iso modes if you want extreme noise and the screw thread on the shutter button for a cable release
I thought the D3 was the best camera ever made
It’s AMAZING , but CMOS not CCD so the vibes are a little different for sure
Have 200 and 300
So good
Not even d3000 how dare you 😭
I think I’ve done a video on the D3000 and ones to follow for the D5000
The D100 is just …… well …. Nostalgic
Noooo. The d100 is a horrible camera! Just horrible. I love Nikon but hated this camera soooo much. Yuck
Ha ! Well, I’ve had some solid experiences with this little gem for sure
Hell no.
NO
:-)
stop listening to this nonsense :D horrible old cam nothing special :D want a cheap dslr that makes sense get a d700
Ha ! The d700 is a wonder for sure but 2,3,4 x the price and way harder to acquire in decent shape ! The D100 is a great camera and if one can shoot good shots with this , one can shoot amazing shots with most of the Nikon range for sure ! Nonsense PHAAA
@@robbellphoto I dont see why reach for the camera in case of d100, the phone wins here :D
@@Moonrakerd phones are unable to create real bokeh, phones use AI for the most part. If you compose to live your life in the matrix. Be my guest. I support reality. The D100 with some vintage glass …. Little slice of heaven
yeap but they also take hdr shots with and give you that polariser look sky straight out of the box, basically if you take pics of landscapes your phone will give you better shots, also try taking a shot with d100 in the evening, even with 1.4 its still a miss mostly
@@Moonrakerd 100% true !! The ISO performance will of course be lacking. My point still stands. Phones vs DSLR/SLR/MLESS…. No contest. And the D100 was used by pros and can still be used to create wonderful images for very little. What does an iPhone cost these days ?! 1200-1500… that’s Sony Alpha money.
Nope -
The greatest CCD camera ever was the Fuji S3 -
And on top of everything else ... that Fuji camera was built like a Sherman tank when compared to the cameras of today, and also back then, as well.
You know, a magnesium alloy body. Sort of like a tough hockey puck.
