I still have both (both with vertical/battery grips) and pick them up from time to time. The CCD sensors are awesome in their analog like look and color, the only issue is that you need to have good lighting or your shadows will be a color noise mess. DR was not a strong suit back then.
The D200 was my main photoshoot camera for a good seven years and still is the camera that shot some of my favorite images to date.

I purchased that camera model new on 2002 - it was my first DSLR. I liked virtually all its features, included construction, auto focus as well, image quality. My single complain was on its handling of NEF format. Way too slow, actually impracticable for most situations I used it (and I did not use it for Sports or BIF).
When D200 was released, I shipped in the new model and sold D100. Never saw behind.
I yet have D200, D300S and D810. Those cameras are yet great, and now a day I could cope with any of them as my single camera.
    Regards.

I am watching this in 2023 as I just purchased, mainly for nostalgia sake, a D100.
I've been impatiently looking for a D200 for a month or two and decided to go ultra-cheap. I got a D100 for $30 usd (with two new batteries and wall charger!) so as I keep my eye out for a D200(!!) I know I'll also have this D100 almost as a training camera to get me back into all of the settings as I've been mirrorless and in the Canon universe for the last few years. Also a great chance to use my Nikon prime lenses!

Hello Steven Nice to meet you here. I am one of the original buyer of a D100 right at their dawn of their existence. So proud and happy owner. I appresiate your assesment and because of it, I would like to hear your recommendation as to which D series should I go from my beloved D100.

Back in the day I knew a guy that was an assistant to a famous photographer in Hollywood and he owned the D100. I was envious at the time since I was doing product photography and was reliant on a film camera the Nikon N80/F80, which incidentally the D100 is based upon as the body platform. In 2004 I switched to digital when the D70 came out.

So you're still using your 20 y.o DSLR with no problems? How about the battery and shutter counts? I'm curious because i bought my Nikon D3300 in 2015. I love it. But last time i used was 2018. I'm wondering if i don't sell it, would i be able to use it 15-20 years later without comparing to the technology next 12 years?

take it to a local electronics/camera repair shop. its probably just cleaning. not sure if its worth your trouble, money-wise. but if you have the heart to have it fixed, these things are built like tanks and will probably last you for another twenty yeears

Got mine free along with the film version N6006? Both came with a substantial number of ai-s and af-s lenses, about every option I could want other than ultra long and super fast. I’m about to unload my d700, d7100, d3300 and several film bodies. I’m no pro anyway. My only investment then would be remaining lenses of nearly every sort.

I started picking up early D cameras for cheap some for as little as $20 upto $100
D1x, d2x, d100, d300, d5000 and d3200 (the only one i bought new) and i love them all for different reasons, the older pro level cameras force me to work harder for good shots and I learn so much from them, so for me they are worth every penny.
Now to be fair I am a crap photographer and get so excited when i get home with a handful of shot I am happy with and my iphone 12pro takes “better” pictures but where is the fun in using a phone as a camera?

I just can't help myself to correct this time. They are not made of plastic they are made of composite. If you look at all the old d100 with 50,000 + shutter count and deep marringn they have been dropped many times scratched dragged, used and abused in the elements. And they still look pretty decent

You're really not getting this for practicality. If because of practicality you went and got the d200, now you can go back and get it for your collection. Besides, sometimes you want to go out and challenge yourself by not having the latest and greatest technologies. This is part of the hobby of photography or being a collector.

  • @mrwashur1991

One thing that I think is overlooked is the screen on the d200. It’s trash by today’s standards but it beats any other camera screen from that era. My d50 looks like absolute trash in comparison and it’s even better than the canon 5d’s screen. That d200 just feels right in the hands.

  • @khanscombe619

Brilliant video. I never had this 1. I came in by the D200 & later a used D2H. But oh my it is so much an upgrade of only a $40. You get so much more usable tech such as the new then standard of i-TTL & the CLS instead of the unique to D1/D100 short lived D-TTL D Lighting. The new flashes won't work except M maybe A. You get 1/8000 Auto FP & 250 flash. & 5 fps. & 10.1 mp. I still used mine as well & only lacking LiveView to feel modern. But the D300s is Flippin amazing upgrade beyond that.

The featured cameras in your videos always seem to create images that look much like images from the modern cutting edge cameras on RUclips on those subjects. People starting out wanting to make images the best they can and have little money see what can achieved. I think your saying you have to learn the creative and tech skills to match the images mostly done for you in expensive modern camera. There are creative people making great content like yours that encourage photography on a budget.
I am sure their's been published images taken with the $45 camera.
I suppose the question is are you as happy with good image out of budget camera as you are with an image out of an expensive one ? I know what I would be smiling at most. Cheers.

That’s a great point. I’ve been currently taking pictures every day with the Canon D30 - Canon’s first DSLR without Kodak. It’s 22 years old, has 3.1 megapixels and 3 autofocus points and I’ve been having a great time. I enjoy these older cameras so much, plus I get such a kick out of knowing that they used to be so expensive and now they’re so much more affordable. I feel like every old camera I’ve used has held up so well throughout the years. I’ve been completely happy with the image quality out of all of them.

5 points is 4 more then i need. 😂 Funny thing is that i just realized that i use 5.9 mp lowest quality jpeg mode in my SL3. I am doing that because of faster transfer and storage mostly. I just upload to ebay and social media anyway. Is anyone here even doing anything else with their photos? Probably if i needed to print some huge billboard 6mp wouldn't be enough, but lets get real.
