heya! super appreciate having a video dedicated to this little ditty I posted about 4 years ago now hahaha, I will say I feel like a lot of the terminology I used in the original tweet isn't _too_ accurate to the actual conscious use case that composers might have when actually using melodic phrases like this. there's been a consistent misunderstanding by the phrasing that i originally coined but in my opinion (as the person that at the very least made the initial observation that coined the term) the 'lick' itself is not just in reference to the four note chromatic descent that everyone thinks of, but rather the _entire_ melodic sequence, including what i'd consider the most important factor; the 4th interval leap going _into_ the chromatic descent (in Secret of the Forest this would be the Bb going into the chromatic descent starting at Eb). this is why I _personally_ would not actually consider a lot of the material here part of the 'mitsuda lick' canon, nor stuff like the mario 3 warp whistle or pokemon main theme - most of them don't have a 4th leap, but rather are leaping from larger steps. Cool Edge (Night) fits into this however. just wanted to throw in my personal take on the matter because I feel like the 4 note chromatic descent is actually a much more musically common figure that's historically been present everywhere, but I want to avoid conflating this alone with the 'mitsuda lick' idea because it's a bit too broad to me. thank you so much for putting this together!
That makes this the second time we've interacted! To be honest, I'm not very good at music theory nor am I classically trained, so I was aware of the 4th leap but didn't exactly know how to differentiate between instances that do and don't have it. But mostly, my reason for naming the video as I did was because I don't think the chromatic descent has a name and I didn't want to coin a term for something so simple, so I used the most commonly applied name even though it might not be fully correct. Still, a very informative comment which I will pin!
@@NUKELEDGE hey! absolutely no worries, and honestly I totally get it! when i first made the tweet i had never formally trained myself in music theory either (it was before I started my studies in college), so I know what you mean. I think the video still does a really good way of showing off the different ways this particular ditty has been used throughout the sonic series and so it's still a really great watch ^^
@@dougggthegoof OMG you are so right, I knew the pokemon title theme, but after registering what the Mitsuda lick I realized it was there in the the Pokemon Title theme the whole time.
This Lick is the Zelda 1 Flute Melody, also used in the Intro of Ocarina of Time but played on Keys there. Also used for the Warp Flute in Super Mario Bros 3
Awesome compilation of these. I've always loved that instance of the mitsuda lick over the minor 3rd chord movement in collision chaos (and titanic monarch too, fairly similar). Also hilltop heights was such a nice surpise, fr one of the greatest sonic osts. The mitsuda lick also shows up in the boss theme from that zone!
At the beginnig I first thought you were playing Magical Sound Shower from OutRun. I recognized the Matsuda lick first in Constructure from Sonic Frontiers and wondered why it sounds like the flute theme from Zelda 1 and Super Mario Bros. 3 and Paper Mario Color Splash. And its also in the title theme of Ocarina of Time.
i love that chill arrangement of a song that keeps us on the move... this is something i definitely associate with sega as a whole, it shows up right at the beginning of burning rangers' i just smile too
Is this lick not at the centerpoint of the Pokémon leitmotif as seen in the title screen theme in Pokémon Red/Blue, right there in the third bar of the A section?
Huh, there is actually a name for that. I like using it in my own compositions as well. But for me... I got it from Koji Kondo. I.E. SMB3 Warp Whistle & Zelda: OoT Title Theme.
it feels like this video was specifically engineered to me lmao (tho i knew like more than half of these) another example i like a lot that's not in the video is high and broken by fumie kumatani

thank you for your service dante
This lick is the main one in the Pokémon theme too, my entire world has changed
which pokemon theme?
@PR0XYL1NK The main theme of the series, the one you usually hear on the title screen of the games
@@dougggthegoof OMG you are so right, I knew the pokemon title theme, but after registering what the Mitsuda lick I realized it was there in the the Pokemon Title theme the whole time.
The chromatic lick is also in the Ocarina of Time title screen.
the transition from palmtree panic directly into quartz quadrant just sounds so natural
Never heard anything so smooth in my life.
1:45 THE (jazz) lick makes an appearance
Literally THE Lick into the Matsuda Lick
Fuck me I had no idea that track's main motif was literally just The Lick until now lmao
Name a more iconic duo
I was about to say lmao
i feel like the jun lick is still more common but hell yeah. also shoutout to THE lick for making an appearance here through rooftop run night
Low-key forgot the Jun lick existed
i love it when some of the jun licks pop up in non jun songs
Examples?
@segamkiii look up "jun senoue's favorite melody" ;)
this made me go through my own Sonic fan project music and sure enough I have it in there too lmao
If you know how to find these songs as the midi format, turn all instruments to something something electric piano ,, I think
I feel like I've been using this a lot without realizing
It's quite ingrained into Sonic's DNA (and some other recognizable videogame songs) so might as well do it anyways
Also nice seeing you here
@clipPRmusic clipper jumpscare
Love the inclusion of Hilltop Heights, the LakeFeperd games' soundtracks are canon to me lol
Wow, even fangames have this lick
hilltop heights in the middle of this is just awesome lmao
Rooftop run really has two licks as its main motif 💀
This Lick is the Zelda 1 Flute Melody, also used in the Intro of Ocarina of Time but played on Keys there. Also used for the Warp Flute in Super Mario Bros 3
Welp, looks like I'm now contractually obligated to use this at least once in my Sonic fangame.
Mmm Palmtree Panic sounds lovely in this soundfont.
I've noticed this motif in a lot of JP and JP-inspired Video Game music. I didn't know it had a name.
Love this video so much. I love that lick so much
unrelated to the entire point of the video but damn i need to hear the full versions of some of these songs w these instruments
2:51 Wow, Forces' classic sonic songs can sound very cool if they didn't have the darn synth, neat!
Was waiting for SATS, incredible work
so jealous of that plugin lull

fantastic presentation in this video!
Friend Inside Me sounding bassline at the beginning
Rooftop Run has another famous lick!
This feels like one of the Persona Songs Ngl.
I believe it's also about 1:25 into BTS's Metro Madness Act 1
Persona has a whole lot of that
i love that chill arrangement of a song that keeps us on the move... this is something i definitely associate with sega as a whole, it shows up right at the beginning of burning rangers' i just smile too
its also in stardust speedway, the bell instrument at the end
I have no idea wtf a lick is but this mix is dope
DUDE I SEE THAT EVERYWHERE
i even use it in some of my songs
also collision chaos past sounds like that one part in titanic monarch
I use it all the time for flute
spongebob steel sting be like
holy FUCK ITS SONIC BEFORE THE S
Is this lick not at the centerpoint of the Pokémon leitmotif as seen in the title screen theme in Pokémon Red/Blue, right there in the third bar of the A section?
It is
Damn, nicely put together!
I love this lick
i think its also in few undertale songs
Definitely, my brain can’t unhear Battle Against a True Hero every time
0:41 is that brawl
I always associate that chromatic phrase with Ocarina of Time
Huh, there is actually a name for that.
I like using it in my own compositions as well. But for me... I got it from Koji Kondo. I.E. SMB3 Warp Whistle & Zelda: OoT Title Theme.
And also the flute in the very first Zelda Game, even before SMB3
@Nordischsound Oh yeah. I forgot it's in that game and that's basically where it originates from.
Great vid, good collection of tracks. This is not what Dante was describing in their tweet though.
True, I discussed this with them in the pinned comment. TL;DR I couldn't think of a better, more succinct way to describe the phrase
dont show this guy gene gadget
That sounds like Quick Man's stage, from Mega Man 2...
Im pretty sure undertale has that in the intro theme
wow ive heard this a lot but never really made the connection with sonic
chromatic
Funny spotting you in me feed Nuke
I made that lick actually
did place all these notes or did u play then edit it ?
just a music player my self also nice work
I'm in the middle of unpacking currently so all of this is placed. Normally I'd play and edit with a keyboard
Nice video but it feels weird calling this a lick when it's just four notes descending stepwise
nice!
I only heard it once, i don't understand this video
watch for the pink notes
@@Rhodochrone Thanks, didn't even notice there were different colours until you pointed it out
