I was ice diving in the early 1970's with a wetsuit. Other than the occasional ice water down my back it wasn't all that bad. This was in Quebec where it does get very cold, but we were not down for more than a half hour. Good times.
What we use to do is that we make some sort of guide routes and markers on the ice with arrows pointing to the entry hole so if you look from under the ice up you know which way the entry hole is. Just in case something fucks up with our reel or guide line or compass under the ice etc. But it depends on local conditions how thick and clear the ice is, if there is snow on top or not etc.
Well, that's one piece of kit you don't immediately think of when planning a dive, you know, a chain saw. As interesting as it is, and thanks for sharing (etcetera), but I think you've cured me of my need to log a few ice dives... ;O)
i swim long distance year round in lake michigan and only wear a 3mm wet suit when the water is below 52 degrees..so far i have the coldest record swim day when the air was 17 degrees below zero and i swam 3/4 of a mile in 31 degree water . my sister joined me for a swim in Antarctica off the ice breaker for a 2 minute swim while wearing swim suits and the captian made us wear a rope around our waist in case we might pass out !
In Scandinavia/Sweden it is common before icedives to showel a cross in the snow around the ice hole to further mark out the hole, to enhance security.Perhaps here the ice was to thick to let through light ??? This is especially important thing to Do When water visibilty is not so good.. Nice Film! Makes me Long for an icy winter, which We have not had for Quite some years.Except in the far north of Sweden ,in ’Norrland”. (This is not fake News! Just check Weather history ,f.e through YR.NO.....)
I think it would be pretty fun just to go and do this, just so you can say "Yeah, I cut ice. With a chainsaw. IN ANTARCTICA." to anyone you meet. Looks fun though:)
i wasn't allowed to pack my wet suit and tanks for this trip due to luggage allowance and it was only a vacation cruise... my sister and i kept begging the captain to allow us to swim and he was sure we were crazy but he called out on the ships address system that the brother and sister from Chicago were going to swim so get your cameras ready...you will be fine in a dry suit or wet suit . the water is 28 degrees . look us up at openwaterchicago
That's awesome! I totally want to get my Ice Cert. Need some more gear first, looking at a good pony setup and the new AquaLung Legend LX Supremes to do it. Not sure if my Mares 22 Abyss Extremes will take it even though I'm told they will. Hard to believe that much life is down there at all!
Before you can dive you have to sweat a lot :))) But very fascinating pictures. I am very impressed by ice-diving even I think it would be to cold for me.
wow you went there? And did you dive in Antarctica as well? I want to do arctic diving, I'm just afraid that with my small frame and 105lbs. I will die of hypothermia after 2 seconds no matter what I wear... :/
Drysuits still need insulation, if you dive dry in shorts and a t-shirt in cold conditions you will be shivering in a trilam suit. Neoprene suits provide more insulation but without the proper undergarment you will not be very comfortable.
+jianghao xu The water is -1.8 degrees celcius. Above the water maybe -20 or so I can't remember that day? sometimes the divers froze solid on the drive home as some dive sights were 5km drive over the sea ice.
i can't wait as Very soon i am going to be able to achieve my goal and ambition of doing a try dive while wearing a drysuit with a qualified instructor in a swimming pool and i am really excited to be able to get to do this this has been a goal and ambition of mine to do a try dive while wearing a drysuit with a qualified instructor in a swimming pool since 2013 people have promised me to help me then have let me down but now i have found someone who has given their word that they will help me to achieve my goal and ambition so i am really looking forward to being able to achieve my goal and ambition of doing a try dive while wearing a drysuit with a qualified instructor in a swimming pool however i do have bladder problems so i will need to wear an Adult nappy underneath my clothes underneath the drsyuit
I see many people complaining about them having the knifes at the legs but I am doing the Open Water Diver course and in one lesson they told me the knife could be at your toes, your legs, and other obvious and common parts. I am not saying that makes it okay to have them there, but I want to ask if maybe the problem is why do they teach that to knew divers

Drysuit diving. Looks like an argon inflation bottle for their drysuit next to the main cylinder. Which is interesting to me that they're diving singles in an overhead environment...
It can but for a very limited time. Maybe 20 Minutes tops. And yeah it is a really bad idea do dive with only one system in such cold waters even with the best equipment. Always use two seperated tanks and regulators.
+Zac findon Hi, I am not sure??? This film is in Antarctica working for British Antarctic survey and the youngest they employ is 21 years old. But it is maybe possible somewhere with frozen ice?
7 лет назад
No. Minimum requirements for ice diving is 16 years old
Why do you think it is not? Was it the frozen sea or the British Antarctic survey building in the background. Or the title Ice diving in Antarctica? lol just kidding
@@Fatui325 pretty shallow where these guys are diving this day. I think 15m or so. I think the deepest dives they do are 40m just because they are so remote. They do have a decompression chamber on base though for just in case:)

Loved the video I do cold water diving up where I live in central Pennsylvania USA although never under the ice . Good stuff.🤙
That fish is just chillin must have antifreeze for blood🤓
Quite possibly hahaha
What a talented filmmaker you are, Kirby! Brilliant places and quality. Looking forward to seeing more
Water temperature is warmer than standing at the outside - otherwise all water would be frozen, about 5 to 10º above freezing levels.
Not true 😂 it's salt water so it's actually below freezing but doesn't freeze, icebergs form when freshwater freezes and separates from the salt water
I´m planning to go there when i graduate!!!!
The interesting thing is that the coldest temperature that i´ve ever faced was 14ºC in Brazil hahahaa
?
Did you ever make the dive?

Wow
It is very cold. You can freedive in some parts of King George Island, but I lasted
Hell to the naw. I'm freezing just watching this.

beautiful!!! What a lucky bunch to get to be there and doing this work!
no doesn't freeze quite that quick, maybe if it was a bit colder further south but i suppose the top side team would keep it clear.
Water at the time of year of filming is about -1 to -1.8 degrees Celsius and the air temp was probably about -20 so indeed warmer in the water.
wait how can the water is below the freezing temperature of it
@@lokwu9147 I thought this too when I was there, it is because of the salt in the water. So salt water freezes at about -1.8 degrees celsius:)
I watch this in 2022
aye its an old video
You can hear the work to breath she is experiencing top side before going into ice cold waters.

Drysuits mean the only thing that's cold is the face around the mask, if that's uncomfortable, you can use a full face mask.
That's just amazing and beautiful🏔️
Thanks:)
How do u stay warm whaaattt???
They are just really hard! Lol good suits and undercuts and full face masks I suppose. Coldest bit is the ride home wet in minus 20 or below!
Eyyyyy thanks bro u still responding to comments what a lad !

Does it feel too cold in the equipment and all the suits?
Those are fully closed equipments. Divers usually wear sweaters and stuff beneath those.
Yes thats right thermal suits underneath.

Whats the depth?
