    We start by discussing the three main Earth materials: rocks, sediments, and fluids. Understanding these components is crucial as they form the basis of hydrogeology, which is the study of water within the Earth's crust. We explore how geology influences groundwater flow, controls the presence of aquifers, and creates permeable pathways.
    We then move on to the importance of geology in determining groundwater recharge areas. By studying the geological formations, we can identify areas where water infiltrates and recharges the groundwater supply. This is crucial for understanding the dynamics of groundwater flow and managing water resources effectively.
    Next, we introduce the concept of groundwater zones, such as the unsaturated zone, capillary fringe, and the saturated zone. Each of these zones plays a vital role in groundwater hydrology, with specific characteristics that affect water storage and movement.
    We also cover important definitions, such as groundwater, porous media, fracture rocks, and impermeable rocks. These terms are fundamental to understanding groundwater modeling and will be referenced throughout the course.
    Furthermore, we explain key concepts like specific yield and specific retention, which describe the water-holding capacity of soils and rocks. Understanding these concepts is essential for accurate groundwater modeling and prediction.
