I was there!!!, im right there behind the counter. That was a performance at Aaron's Record Store in LA, during the concerts of 4AD's All Virgos Are Mad.
Interesting. I assumed this was before they signed to 4AD, because it sounds so different from the recorded version. I guess this is closer to what they sent to 4AD before Ivo Watts-Russell rearranged it.
@@christopherb7134 in fact not. This is just live as can be :) HNIA's early tape work (this song included on their "Early Works" cassette) displayed bits that were in progress - but judging from these pre-4AD versions, most of these earlier songs already had that ethereally weird aura over them... Ivo and John Fryer sure helped shaping these up for "Livonia," but that ghostly sound was in HNIA already... Live, however, they seem to have totally (and deliberately so) deconstructed these songs to shy away from the album versions... There's also a similar live deconstruction of "Are You Coming Down This Weekend" elsewhere on YT.
Love the guy with the white guitar and the fender amp making crackling noises, this is a whole nother musical direction, this is my favourite track by this band,
I love the audience being totally stunned and static like "wtf is that?" You're just watching alternative legends, geeks. I'd die to have been in your place!
God, I miss Aron's records. They always had these incredible in-store shows. And their used-CD bins were filled with promo releases of new albums (even though they weren't supposed to sell promos!) that allowed a college-aged me to buy so much music on a limited budget. If I remember correctly (and maybe I don't, it was a hell of a long time ago) this was shot September 24, 1994. It was one of the first shows of the All Virgos Are Mad series of events that 4AD staged all over Los Angeles into early October.
His Name is Alive is some of the most melancholic and nostalgic music I've ever heard.
best version

Lucky man, must have been awesome.

What year was it?
@@cocteau14 It was the fall of 1994. I was there too. Aaron’s Records was the best!

+incongra That was Ian Masters of Pale Saints having trouble with his guitar amp. hehehe :(
Oh boy, he's being really respectful to those guys who are actually playing
I'm thinking it was intentional
It's my favorite track too. Timeless !
@@incongra I'd have loved to hear what this would have sounded like with Ian's amp working!

Just introduced to this band, and I'm in live with them already.
