It is absolutely true. If there is one who deserves the RED BELT, it is Master Rickson Gracie. One can understand it only if the practice of JiuJitso is part of his/hear life. Whoever had chance to train BJJ will certainly understand what you mean.
It kind of amazes me that EVERYBODY in the world that has any knowledge of who Rickson Gracie is says that he deserves to wear the red belt except Rickson Gracie. He is an amazing man. He is what jiu-jitsu is all about.
You guys are great. Thanks. Please get some sound absorbing mid range acoustic panels up on the walls particularly in the corners to cut down on the sound reflections. This will vastly improve the sound quality and therefore allow your message to be better understood.

And actually it's a Jiu Jitsu academy with a brand new giant open space where students of all ages need to hear their instructor so they can get that small detail and learn the technique. Thank you for your explanation and references. I hope the philosophy of "self defense" first and competition second is further promoted and strengthened in the greater Jiu-Jitsu community world wide by Rickson Gracie's promotion.

I think the biggest reason that Rickson deserves the red belt is because he doesnt want to wear it though it was granted to him unanimously by the council. So many people would put it on and walk around all puffed up like "look at what I have done with my life everyone." But Rickson says he is going to wait for the rest of the time he has to fulfill according to the standards laid out by his federation in order to be fair and maintain order in promotion. He will put it on officially I believe in 2 or 3 more years. I think Ricksons statement and actions are commendable and noble. There is a famous saying, "the belt only covers 2 inches of your ass, you must cover the rest." Lol
Matt Padgett funnily enough I think Rickson himself had the biggest problem with it at the time. Mainly because he's very strict with promotions and the length of time on each belt, and his brother straight up skipped him 8th grade from 7th to 9th which rickson wasn't comfortable with, as he said he felt he shouldn't be treated any differently than anyone else (even if we all think he deserves it). Rumor has it he's not even wearing the red belt at the moment and is sticking with his old one, how true that is I dunno but it shows his true commitment to the 'proper' way of BJJ and nothing else, which is quite incredible. Rickson is the man. Anyway bit of info if you were interested
Dan G i understand why he didnt want it. But thats for him to decide. Not the bjj community. I've been training 6 and a half years. I'm just a purple belt. Thats like me having issue with what belt he wears due to time. The man knows as much about jiu jitsu as anyone on the planet. The community who got upaet needs to realize they dont have the right to be upset. You are correct. Right now he is still wearomg his coral red and black. But he can take that up with him and hia family. Not us out there who have only been training a short time. Good to get a reply from soemone who does understand though. I appreciate a real discussion
Matt Padgett you will know way more than me then, I don't train in BJJ, it just really interests me - would love to start at some point though. Yeah I agree Rickson shouldn't get any scrutiny from the community at all, the man's been training for 40 years he should have all of our respect
Dan G cool deal buddy. You should start. Its for anyone. Young or old. Weak or strong. It'll change your life. Good luck in finding a shcool. You wont regret it.
If you research the word "Jiu" in Japanese it is not the same word as "Ju". They are 2 completely different words. It is interesting though, the word "Jiu" in Japanese means, "determination, endurance, working hard, and striving, never giving up though its hard." It does describe Jiu jitsu(or properly, Jujutsu) but it still means a very different thing. I train Japanese Goshin Jujutsu newaza so that is just how I feel it is proper, and it should have always remained Jujutsu. "The gentle art".

I went to medical school, some guys were extremely talented and time used and could take a lot of additional course and become doctors quick, while 98% other medical school needed to either normal or additional years to become doctors :) SAME WITH Gracie jiu jitsu. :)
bin 3loush The navy belt they wear is a homage to Gracie Jiu-Jitsu's early days where only three colors were awarded - White, Light Blue, and Navy. The navy belt was awarded to those students who completed the Instructors course at the time and became Professors.
@@RalphJacob Ralph, does your school only use the three belts that you mentioned or is the navy belt added to the main-steam belt system? If yes, where does the navy belt fit?
@@JohnDoe-gd1zj We use the mainstream belt colors. However, the navy belt is an exclusive rank work only by those who were personally taught by Grandmaster Helio. In fact, our black belts substitute the traditional red tab for a navy blue one.
I think that Rickson's promotion is not surprising and being such a jiu jitsu genius that he is, makes him a perfectly good candidate for the red belt. Still, I am not sure I agree with your explanation of why exactly Rickson got it. If belt promotion should not require time, then what stops us from promoting kids to JJ black belts? There are many super-talented kids out there who advanced to black belt level very fast. I still believe we should not promote them to black belts before they turn 18.
