Trying Japanese Natto (Fermented Soybeans)

- First time trying NATTO! They’re traditional Japanese fermented soybeans. Very sticky, very slimy, a bit smelly but had a coffee scent, and very prone to getting stuck in my beard. Eating it by itself was a bit strong, but it was balanced with some rice! An egg yolk made it very creamy but it was good that way too. The Natto we got was $3.50 for 3 boxes from the Asian grocery store, but I’m not really sure what the normal price is since it’s the first time we ever tried it!
I'm Japanese but it took me 5-6 times before starting to like it! I love it now, I add in some chopped spring onions to mine over hot rice. Very nutritious but is definitely a "learned taste"--especially the texture being very slimy, lol. I personally like the Ume flavor, but that again may be something of a learned taste and unique to Japan. I love Umeboshi, lol.
Props for trying it out on camera!
Learned taste like acquired taste?
Yeah like the guy who described it as "shy friend"
@@ietdkvd you appreciate learned taste food overtime, but for acquired taste, you either love it or hate it the moment you taste the food for the first time.
Yea, that was my take on it as well. It's not bad. It smells like coffee, it has an umami and bitter flavor. We have something similar in Korea called "dwenjang" or "doenjang," so the flavor profile isn't too foreign to me. Eaten with rice, it's not bad, but it's a really simple meal and I would still need other kinds of side dishes to add more variety to the textures and flavors. Not something I'd choose to eat specifically, but if it's there I'll eat it. I feel like there would be better usage to natto if it was cooked into certain dishes or infused with other ingredients to create something hybrid.
that sounds interesting!
I eat it with avocado and nutritional yeast. Other than the stringy, sticky texture, I actually like it.
I went through a phase of mixing natto with sriracha and eating it on toast. Quick college breakfast.
From a country being famous for its "Balot" I cant wait to try natto!
Brother under any circumstance Please … do not shave off your gorgeous beard … 🤍
You gay?
Having texture issues, gonna be a pain eating this
I was surprised that it smelled so much like coffee but tasted much more bland. Tastes great with the soy and Mustard.
Not for me but my late friend loved eating it!😊
Late? Why is he your “late” friend…
@@micahwiley9254 He passed away a couple years ago
@micahwiley9254 Because he passed away several years ago. Just curious is English your first language 😉 🤔
@@pandabear153 that's unfortunate, hope you're doing well ❤

You look like an Asian version of Deven Chris
Nah who busted on bro's beans😭
My bad
Extra protein 😋
You don't eat Nattō by itself. Usually with warm rice.
I could deal with the taste, but not the glutinous texture.
I've never had nato as a child growing up, and all my friends told me their parents made them eat it with breakfast a couple times a week because it's good for you (kinda like how in America kids are made to eat their vegetables). As an adult that started eating it a few times a month, it's really not that bad. You can eat it with almost anything as well, even sushi. There are health benefits and it's really not nasty as what kids would say about it. The texture and initial looks can be deceiving. It's not creamy or sugary, so don't think you're gonna br eating something sweet.
This man is absolutely gorgeous 🥹😍😍
Fashion is weird. Austin got that medieval farmer tunic shirt.
Hereb in Manipur, indiabtest real good if we cook with pork

The only reason i know what that is is gintama

Buzzfeed did this first but they just absolutely disrespected the food

The only Japanese person with beard I have seen😅
It is only edible when mixed with other spices. Eating plain obviously will taste horrible 😂
