One of the things I love about Voiceplay is that, unless the song requires it, there is no "lead" singer. Everyone gets their spot in the sun (see what I did there?). Sixteen Tons was the first thing I heard from Geoff, then I found Voiceplay. I've been hooked for years! Even when they sing something I've never heard of, like this one, I am absolutely amazed by them.
Every listen on this shows me more surprises. I don't know how I missed it before, but the last 'sound' from Layne (Beatboxer) is an inhale of some kind - as if you are being sucked into the black hole. They do layer their voices to get the effect needed. And they save out a 'Karaoke' track as a perk for their Patreon which allows us to really hear the different layers that are more backgrounded in the final mix. They've recently been playing that Karaoke track over their outros. So, if you listen again to the music over their outro, you can hear that 'backing track' without the melody. My fave part of the original was the grungy, buzzy distorted guitar solo. And I feel VoicePlay did an amazing job emulating that sound here. That and I really love the part where they are singing 'Black' 'Hole & 'Sun' each separately - almost as if the words were just ooo's & aah's in the harmony parts. At the very beginning, it makes a mysterious start and then repeating it later as a break/change between verses. As far as honoring Chris Cornell, I really get the impression that Eli was singing about him specifically when he sang "No one sings like you anymore..." He just seemed so emotionally involved in that line. This was an Eli/Layne arrangement. While Geoff and Layne are great arrangers, Eli has agreed to doing it more often now, too. If you would like to hear another one of his arrangements, I highly suggest VP's cover of RadioHead's "Creep".
There are so many layers, it's insanely good. It seems every listen you get the impression they added something just for you ears. lol And yes, you mentioning the line "No one sings like you anymore" gave me chills. And I loved how they made that gtr sound to stay true to the core of the song as far as the music goes. I can't wait to listen to Creep, one of my fav songs. Thank you for being here.
