  • New-to-me 2007 Yamaha XT 225 first impressions ride in Willow, Alaska.
September 19-21, 2022. Fall weather with lots of rain makes wet trails.
The 225 is a very nice bike and completely different than the Yamaha TW 200. After my rides I can say it does not compare in any way with the TW.
The TW is an excellent, although heavy, trail bike that lets you enjoy the scenery as you putt along at low speed. It seems like it will go anywhere, it just doesn't go fast.
The XT 225 is a true Dual Sport that can go slow or fast and is more exciting to ride if you pick up the pace. The stock suspension is the speed limiter but that can be improved with money buying the right parts. Not inexpensive.
The 225 engine has a lot more power and you can feel it while the TW accelerates the 225 blasts off in comparison. The 6 speed transmission on the 225 is very nice but you do need to keep shifting.
Overall first impressions on the stock bike is that it compares much better with a Honda XR200R but the 225 has the magic button starter. My XR 200R has excellent (not stock) suspension and is much lighter than the 225 but it is not street legal. So, the 225 will not replace my TW but it may well replace my XR...

Hi Jim I. too have an xt225 it's a 2001.I bought it for my daughter, then she went off to school, and never moved back , so it's mine now. Love the bike but don't ride it much any more. She and her husband ride it when they're home for a visit. Looks like you've accumulated quite a few bikes. I'm looking to buy an electric duelsport as soon as they come out with an affordable one, then I'll sell off The CRF250, maybe.

The 225 is a nice bike and I hope to modify it to fit me better.
Riding the XR200R and the XT225 on the same day, same trails really shows the differences. But my XR is far from stock with major modifications so I have things I can do to the 225 to make it better for me. One big difference is the distance from the foot pegs to the top of the seat, the XR is 3" taller than the XT so my legs aren't bent near as much on the XR. But I did make a tall seat for it.
I really like the simplicity of an electric bike and I hope the battery tech and price improve to make them lighter and more affordable. I've been looking at electric fat tire bikes recently. I like the quiet stealth riding possibilities.
