I AM SO VERY, VERY “GRATEFUL” TO EACH “ FUNK BROTHER” FOR THE MOST AMAZING & ETERNAL “ MOTOWN SOUND” THEY CREATED. THIS MUSIC IS IN MY HEART, MY SOUL & MY CONSCIOUSNESS FOREVER AND EVER. I LOVED THE DOCUMENTARY FILM “ STANDING IN THE SHADOWS OF MOTOWN”, A FILM THAT RECOGNISED EACH ONE. OF THEM & THAT GAVE US A GLIMPSE INTO THEIR COLLECTIVE “GENIUS”. THANK YOU FUNK BROTHERS FOR YOUR GIFTS & CONTRIBUTIONS THAT ENRICHED OUR WORLD- I LOVE & APPLAUD EACH & EVERY ONE OF YOU. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🇨🇦
One of America's great loss's is the passing of this fabulous group of musicians! And when the remaining ones go a generation of music that was fantastic will probably be forgotten for those who made it even though much of it still gets played in adds or movies. I don't think such a gathering of this type of talent will ever be brought together like it again!
Watching this whilst the radio played in the background. What comes on radio.... the four tops. I'm picturing these guys playing a groove to this song. Respect. RIP gentlemen.
Mr. Bob Babbitt one of the Funk Brothers past away today at age 74. He laid down bass lines on songs such as Stevie Wonders "Signed,Sealed,Delivered.Ball of Confusion the Temptation.War by Edwin Starr and Inner City Blues Marvin Gaye. You will be missed RIP Bobby Babbitt.
Amazing time, incredible talent that will never be topped. Never. Without question the greatest hit machine ever. Just watch the one minute at the end of standing in the shadows when it shows all the hits. Mind boggling. So glad I grew up with Motown in the 1960s
Saw the Funk Bros. tour in 2004 at the Keswick in Glenside, PA. Met Bob Babbitt after the show, he was standing outside their bus. I'm a bass player so I asked him about his unusual looking amp with tiny speakers. He said it was a Phil Jones and that he loved it. I have an autographed photo of them. The only one left today is Ashford. I am grateful to them and to Allan Slutsky who put it all together. I grew up listening to Motown and that part of my life is gone forever (parents died, house sold) but the music is one of the few parts of my childhood that lives on forever so for that reason I feel very nostalgic about it.
JAMES JAMERSON! When i here the bass lines to darling dear by J-5, i came home from school, i told my grandma i wanna play bass. She got me a guitar & amp, and i just took it to another level
To call them, “The Elite of The Elite,” would be an understatement!!! It’s amazing how God, destiny, time, circumstances, whatever you want to call it, brings certain people together for a designated period in time, to make a mark in this world that will stand the test of time!! We’ll never see the likes of them again. God rest the ones gone before, and bless them that remain.
It is so sad and too bad the members of the Funk Brothers are no longer with us. They were the blood and lifeline of Motown that made its music terrific. The were the spirit of America. Also, it is sad to know that some of these Brothers lived despondent lives. These Brothers died very young.
I wanted to sit back and just enjoy "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" but I felt sad and sort of upset when I left the theater. Had no idea they were paid so poorly and given so little recognition while creating music that still sounds as fresh and vibrant today as when it was recorded. At least it looks like they had a blast together in the studio. I saw the Motown Musical but it struck me as such a vanity project, all about Gordy and his life which was not as interesting a story as what went on inside that studio. I would give anything to have been at the recording session for the instrumentals for "My Guy" (that bass!) or "Heat Wave" (the musicians were on fire as was the entire vocal group on that one). Sometimes you could pick up on the fun the musicians were having right in the grooves of the record. The musicians sounded like they had a blast on "When the Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes" , "Girl, You Need a Change of Mind", and "Ball of Confusion", among many others.
WOW! I thoroughly enjoyed that piece of film footage. Though I was just a small child in the 60's, I feel a special connection to them. Such masters at what the did/do.
Very sad. I don't know when this was filmed, but since the release of Standing... the great Uriel Jones and Joe Tucker (both in this video) have also passed away. There are 4 remaining original Funk Bros. - Jack Ashford, Eddie Willis, Joe Messina and Bob Babbitt (all in this video as well). If you love MOTOWN, Standing in the Shadows of Motown is a MUST see. Long live the Funk Brothers... much respect and I'll love you for all of my days.
I’m watching this video and am further saddened by the losses after this video was released. Joe Hunter (not Tucker) in 2007, Uriel Jones in 2008, Bob Babbitt in 2012 and Eddie Willis in 2018. Now it’s just Jack Ashford and Joe Messina. Eventually we all go, but it’s still just a huge loss for music. No one ever did it like the Funk Brothers, and we are forever grateful.
sadly i think all of them are gone now wish i could have met some of them just to say thank you could have made me sound good Robert was the one who did that beautiful into to My Girl
This is true, you tend to forget about the brass and tend to concentrate on the core funk brothers, which reminds me that if you could count them as funk bros, there was Dennis Coffey and Spider Webb
+jennifur sun yeah, I think Dennis Coffey and spder web weren't "official" funk brothers but were contract musicians with Motown at least that is what I have heard.
I love the funk brothers Immediately simply because so many behind the scenes people never get their credit I have to support the fellas they've done to much not to be recognized.... *PAHZAZZ RADIO IS NOW HERE ON RUclips FLY HIP HOP MUSIC and MUSIC VIDEOS FROM YOURS TRULY HIT THAT CHANNEL ENJOY SOME AMAZING CONTENT!!!!
just saw the broadway play Motown great show, unfortunately one sentence in the whole 2.5 hour show regarding the funk brothers and not mention of any of the names of these great musicians will carry there memories with me forevwer
I've seen the movie a few times. This would've been a perfect addition. A story of the few that didn't even get to see the movie through to the end. Sad. But important to know..
I'm trying to understand where was the recognition during the Motown celebrations and anniversaries. Playing and creating music is the background for any project so their contributions where not paid in full???
My favorite musicians ever,RIP! This was very sad. People tend to be hard headed when it comes to health though. You gotta put down the cigs, the swine and try to stay alkaline and stop eating 3plus times a day.
sadly while he was dying some really nasty person or persons stole his bass guitar. no one knows where it is now and sadly Alan didn't pay the guys when he said he would so i have been told by someone who knows
The man’s gonna die in alcohol withdraw, a horrible thing. If he drinks or eats who cares? Make a moral judgement on your friend and humiliate him. I never get that.
All of these men were so talented there would have never been a Motown without all of you
I do hope that ALL of these brothers are in the hall of fame.
Motown treated these great men, these great musicians like slugs! God Bless them all!

Rest in Peace, Bob Babbitt. July 16, 2012 today; bassist Bob Babbitt passed away in Nashville. He was 74. And now there are three...
There’s only 2 funk brothers left. 😢 The Motown sound was a big inspiration to my becoming a musician.
Unfortunately, Joe Messina has passed on April 4, 2022
Yeah only Jack Ashford is still alive.
A lot of pain was endured making this Motown legacy. I hope all their kids are paid. Love these guys. Such an infuential part of my musicianship.
Think of the jam session that is going on in heaven with all these great musicians who have passed away
Standing in the shadows of Motown is my favorite documentary hands down!

That was a great show. The Funk Bros also played the Prince Theatre in Philly that year
I cry every time I watch the documentary...ever time. So touching..makes me mad glad sad and lucky to have been raised on their music!
Rest in peace, Motown drummer Uriel Jones, March 24, 2009

Rest in peace, Eddie "Chank" Willis, Motown guitarist, August 20 2018
They we're the Sound of Young America!!! Phenomenal!!!
Its criminal that these gentlemen and their families did not get the recognition and financial rewards they so richly deserved.
You were in the presence of greatness said Otis Williams of the Temps at Motown.
Those drums that always started Motown tracks. Brilliant.
I'm not crying my eyes are just full of music
GIVE IT UP FOR THE FUNK BROTHERS .
Gone But never forgotten
I have the DVD. I’ve watched at at least 20 times. Great story, great men.
