Alex, one mistake if I may. The top case of the rhythm machine is not set for making sandwiches originally but for preparing daiquiri cocktails. With a tiny paper umbrella. Very enjoyable and useful as usual. That chord progression is something to study for sure...
It's funny but also true - I have a serious association with hospitals, death, and the smell of disinfectant with this kind of music playing softly through recessed speakers. Dentist drills and needles, too. An attempt to make these scary places a bit less scary back in the day backfired spectacularly - at least with me.
I've always LOVED easy listening, cocktail, smooth jazz, elevator music for some reason. It's just so good. Thanks for explaining the chord progression that was really interesting.
Alex, I swear you can compose ANYTHING. It has the right sort of pleasant, leisure-suit-and-daiquiri-with-the-tiny-umbrella vibe. If it has a fault, it's that it's a little too interesting.
I was floored. Its short length did leave me feeling a little shafted, though. With all of life's ups and downs, it's good to have music like this that pushes the right buttons.
Haha brilliant! Muzak are so bizzare that its funny and you cant get enough of it. When I was a young music studen my fellow students and I could sit all evening drinking beer and listen to elevator music, laughing at it and loveing it at the same time🤣
This music is like a mix of "Elevator Muzak" and something from Jean-Jacques Perrey's " The Amazing New Electronic Pop Sound Of Jean Jacques Perrey (1968)". Childish happy vibe and surreal vibe. Alex, if you make plan to make an album of this kind of stuff, let me know, I'll buy it.
Always wanted to play an Ondioline. Enjoyed Gotye's recent project with one. MS-20: It's about creating a resonant band-pass sound with the two filters. Then some envelope on them to add in some wah-wah. Think the oscillators are just sawtooth in octaves. And that's about it.
Really cool stuff! I couldn't understand like 90% of what you said or how to apply it other than vaguely note down the instruments and BPM as I'm self-taught but yeah really cool example of the genre 👍
Lol! That cheesy joy with existential threat! You know me! I don’t like elevators. I recently did a little video as a carrier for a piece of horror music I’d taken and rewritten. And I had to ride the elevator 4 times, 5 floors up and down... brrrr. And I chose the elevator because it’s inherent scary.
i have a maestro king drum machine with triggers for custom beats and a TR-66 but man your making me want that roland rack ugh...how mucch t=do those go for? i never paid more then 260 for any of my drum boxes i guess im a cheapo
Wonderful. I love Elevator Muzak. I did a presentation on it at a congress a year or so ago, which I recorded and uploaded to RUclips. It's only had 47 views though, principally because it's shit. Yours, however, is great. I wish I had more views. Can I have some of yours?
While I think you definitely nailed the breezy elevator music sound, I don’t really care for how you described it-“naive joy” combined with “existential dread”. You’re implying and echoing a common attitude about music I’ve noticed in the last 20 years-that bright, major chord, happy sounding music is lame and “naive”. And with all due respect, I think that’s bullshit. I’m tired of all the depressing shit that is put out today. And I think we’re overdue for a musical renaissance where fun, happy music is made again. Furthermore, the only reason why you associate elevator music with existential dread is because it’s just an overused trope in movies and TV. Elevator music playing in the background of a more sinister, gritty reality seemed edgy and amusing at first. But it’s overdone and boring now.
"That feeling of naive joy, entwined with an overwhelming sense of existential dread". Genius!
Totally forgot about this video. Ha.
Makes me want to ride up to the 70th floor.
My floor is IVmM9.
Alex, one mistake if I may.

That joke at the start re existential dread had me in tears
Definitely the soundtrack of the apocalypse.

Wing Flanagan A bit like clowns

Cheers Wing. Thought it was a fun one to do :)
This is way better than any muzak I've ever heard, and I've been stuck in the wallpaper section of Trago Mills.
Lol!
The ending joke was so cheezy haha, love it!
;)

It's cathartic!

I do love a spot of Jean-Jacques. His Ondioline stuff is particularly ace.
Easily the funniest of your videos that I've seen...on many levels.
Thanks for the lift.
Naive joy and existential dread :) It's actually a cool track, well done.
That Jean-Jacques Perrey vibe is amazing! You're getting an Ondioline sound out of that MS-20...so cool! Would love a tutorial on that

Gotta love Elevator Muzak :)

There was a local radio station that only played Elevator Music back in the 70s and 80s. There was minimal or no dj voiceover as well.
Love it, love it! So much effort put into making music that is so hideous!
Your video made my day. Thanks for sharing 👍
Cheers :)
I really like it, nice work guys! Let's all Muzak and Mallsoft :-)
Ah, yes. The Roland TR-77 with its classy sandwhich board to make your meal to the sweet rhythms of a drum machine.
Also doubles as a trouser press.
Last meal before the apocalypse ....
Because you wanna die with your boots on and well-pressed trousers, like a boss! :)))
There is a part of me that just loves that fake happy joy sound! :D Very nice... time for a Martini and Soda!!!
Make sure to pop an olive and umbrella in it.
@@AlexBallMusic I did and added a parasol :D
Perfect
great job as always!
It's jamming AND pumping I see!
Haha. Always!
Amazing videos dude! Keep it up.
Oh dear god no! Aaaa! *runs away in horror ... but dancing while running*
Haha. Thought I'd mix up the tutorials with something silly. 😉
Haha. I know exactly how you feel :D

wah wah wah bu-buh-bub wah wah that sound of muzak
Great work, so addictive!
Thought it would make a nice contrast to the modular synth video :)
Never thought I'd hit this point in life but here I am
Whats the weather like over here?
The new KPM 1000 SERIES
I just wanna find a bass tutorial/lesson for elevator muzak. Killer video tho!!!
.....this goes so hard
Are there any instruments that you're not prolific at?
This sounds like something MF DOOM would've loved to bar out on. That's how you know it's good.
Sounds like the theme to a Terry and June style 70s sitcom
I half expect Ken Danger’s parents (Terry and June) to use this as their theme tune
baa. buh-ba-ba-buh-ba-ba. buh-baa-buh. Help! I now have musak in my head and it just won't come out! Excellent tutorial as always Alex.
We all need muzak in our head. Helps with the dystopia.
I don't know why but all of a sudden, after the video was finished, I started picturing this on a gory scene of a Tarantino movie, is that bad?
Haha. Perfect juxtaposition.
i have a maestro king drum machine with triggers for custom beats and a TR-66 but man your making me want that roland rack ugh...how mucch t=do those go for? i never paid more then 260 for any of my drum boxes i guess im a cheapo
Any reason why not include the E7 after the Bhalfdim. :P
Was so obvious and sounds so good
Yes, you're right, I missed a trick there. Could have gone Bm7b5 to E7/G# to Am11 too.
Will have to do that next time I'm in an elevator.
Muzak is the new synthwave?
Muzakwave. It starts now.
So what prize does one win for best comment on an Alex Ball video? A spinning top?
Life time supply of Vulf Compressor.
Boazino!

If only I was half as talented ...
Hey Alex, bit of a technical question but how did you sync your DAW to the output of the drum machine?
Manually adjusted the tempo until it locked. You can go to three decimal places in Cubase.
is this like your studio and all your instruments
These are mine, I've built them up over 20 years. Started with that very Squier guitar and a tape recorder in the late 90s.
Hah, you referenced Jean Jacques Perrey ! Very good.
Definitely an inspiration here. Gotta love JJP.
What happened to your video on the T2 score, Alex?
The studio blocked it on copyright grounds. It survives here:

Wonderful that it’s still available! Thank you!
I6/9, the loungiest of the lounge!
It's like chord I, but wearing loafers and with a couple of shirt buttons undone
You plan on making generic 80s mall music? Mallsoft is basically that but 25% slower

It was a light hearted joke. 👍
Elevator muzak is the downfall of Sirius Cybernetics Corporation Happy Vertical People Transporters. Just stating a fact.
I bet the sandwiches taste better if you make them on top of your drum machine...
😂
Your elevator humour has many flaws
Don't bring it down.
