    I like this quote from Alvin Collins on Muzak:
    “...Muzak’s business wasn’t really about selling music... It was about selling emotion - about finding the soundtrack that would make this store or that restaurant feel like something, rather than being just an intellectual proposition.”

    • @gabeux
      @gabeux 8 лет назад +14

      +Orion Ploner That's sounds really cool, because nowadays everything sounds like a high school or some shitty place with all of the never ending mass-produced pop stuff.
      Weird how music is such a huge part of humanity but everywhere (public) you go you hear shitty stuff.

    • @orionploner1830
      @orionploner1830 8 лет назад +12

      +Gabeux Atmosphere is so important. I feel like background music like Muzak makes so much more sense than, as you said, mass-produced pop music. Something like Muzak can appeal to a broader market of people, and, because the music is simple and easy to listen to, it would make something like shopping a calmer experience.
      I feel like pop music creates an urgent and energetic atmosphere that is intended to appeal to a younger demographic. I don't know about you, but walking into some hip clothing store to be greeted by loud, intrusive pop music makes me want to turn around and walk straight back out again.

    • @gabeux
      @gabeux 8 лет назад +8

      Orion Ploner Yep, I agree completely.
      What's -hilarious- ironic is that even though you see tons of things in public places that creates, as you said, urgent or 'shallow' experiences and atmospheres, you see articles and other things dedicated to leading a calmer and more contemplative lives, like tons of magazines and articles about yoga, meditation, jogging/running, etc.
      This month I started thinking about a certain 'metaphor' with equalizers/equalization and anything else.
      It's like people could lead better lives by simply tuning things down, but they try to desperately 'boost' things instead.
      So many things in life seem to work like music..if you want it to sound good, try removing the useless, unnecessary or unwated features, and the desired, wanted or sought-out things will appear by themselves.
      So putting crazy-nonsensical-happy pop everywhere feels like boosting a frequency so much it makes you want to throw up.

  • @Jcolinsol
    @Jcolinsol 8 лет назад +2

    Damn, there's a lot of shit that goes into making muzak. I can see why audiences favor other genres these days. The quickness and ease of using digital tools allows artists to experiment and iterate faster and more prolifically, compared to muzak which needs an actual composition, and instruments, and performers, and oh my god, is _muzak_ going to be the classical music of the future?

    • @PneumatinisPlaktukas15
