      I'm Irish dad, Scot mum, born Glasgow, raised England ..
      I understand why you might feel shame for your English side....
      BUT....
      Remember the average common English folk are just as warm and beautiful and sarcastic and hard working as the Irish Scots n Welsh....
      Never forget it was the royals, elites and legacy families and some brainwashed military ....
      It wasn't the average folk... So don't be too ashamed cos it wasn't "that"
      ... "We" are all brothers.

      100 years after republic proclamation, unable to defend theyr seas from pirate fishermens (imagine a navy), Gaeilge being a second class lenguage in theyr own land, brit banks evicting homes in the island, multinationals as google paying 1% of taxes while a irish baker pays 12%, the conflict being internationaly recognized as religius instead of political (as realy is), republics military infrastructure being used by USA to transport prisoners to theyr "secret" prisons in Poland or Guantanamo and blueshirts proclaiming the old fenians as part of them. James was right in all hes points about the forming republic, they change the flag and the accent of the rulers, nothing more than that. Achieving the 32 ignoring those points will mean nothing if Eire Nua is still a idea and not a real political agenda.
      And also, Ireland (fenians) is leading the way for many nations from europe as Bretons (france ocupation), Corsu/Sardu (France/Italy ocupation), Catalans (france/spain ocupation) Euskaldun (france/spain ocupation)... The struggle is realy far from its end, sadly.

      He was indeed a great man, but to speak the truth, he was British not Irish and he was in the British Army as part of the British occupying force in Ireland for 7 years, which was when met Lillie. On the other hand, people tend to forget that British doctors and nurses cared for him in Dublin Castle before his execution. Of course Asquith called all the other circa 75 executions off on 11th May the day before he was executed with on 12 May with Sean Mac Diarmada.

      @@patriciathewisher2315 Pre 1st Jan 1983 (when the qualification definition changed) you were automatically deemed a British Citizen if you were born in "Britain", why do you think people like Lady Georgian went to London to give birth to Constance? so she would be a British Citizen, that why. Of course Tom Clarke was also born in England as James Clarke was a sergeant in the British Army but I wouldn't want to be the one to dare call Tom English to his face, he would kick my arse.
      To can then take this to all sorts of level, for example was Dev and American not Irish? Or, look at Erskine Childers an Englishman who risked his life to get arms to the IV in 1914, or Charlotte Despard, born in Scotland and brother of general Maxwell's boss FM Lord French and look at what she did in support of women's suffrage and Irish Republicanism. To me it's not where they were born thats important but what they did to further the cause of Irish Freedom, that is the most important thing.

      Had a similar experience a few years ago during the tour of Kilmainham in the courtyard at the site of where the executions took place. The tour guide mentioned in order each of the executions and when they got to talk about James Connolly I welled up. It was particularly cruel how they executed him in that he was being kept alive in the hospital just to be murdered by firing squad.

    • @johnoconnor4623
      @johnoconnor4623 9 лет назад +11

      +Maurice Kiely Sometimes it is hard to be civil when we know what cruelty was done to our great brave men. It is good now that we have a centenary; it should be done with respect and dignity for our men of a hundred years ago who gave us a great country. Their vision, their ultimate sacrifice should be honoured, not loudly, not brashly but quietly. For example, I just read Padraig Pearse's Poem , written on the night before he was executed:
      The beauty of the world hath made me sad,
      This beauty that will pass;
      Sometimes my heart hath shaken with great joy
      To see a leaping squirrel in a tree,
      Or a red lady-bird upon a stalk,
      Or little rabbits in a field at evening,
      Lit by a slanting sun,
      Or some green hill where shadows drifted by
      Some quiet hill where mountainy man hath sown
      And soon would reap; near to the gate of Heaven;
      Or children with bare feet upon the sands
      Of some ebbed sea, or playing on the streets
      Of little towns in Connacht,
      Things young and happy.
      And then my heart hath told me:
      These will pass,
      Will pass and change, will die and be no more,
      Things bright and green, things young and happy;
      And I have gone upon my way
      Sorrowful.

    I was recently proudly involved in a tribute to the men of 1916. I did the poem, which was written by one of the execution squad and a musician played this song. I had never seen these two paired until today. BTW James Connolly was a Scotsman by birth, so even more amazing what he did for Ireland

    He was born a street away from my Grandad and he worked with my Great Grandfather, or was it the other way round.? They were patriotic to the hair on their toes. A saying of my Aunt, but still true. There's a Plaque on the wall which commemorates him, his birth and, life and death. There used to be a March each year on his birthday. My son and I marched together a few times. My son shares his Date of Birth with James Connolly. He's proud of that. Don't know if it's still on, don't think it will. My son would know. God Bless James Connolly, and do it, even if some say no.

    the plough shines very nice and neat over the sky of boston where i now live and turns around the north star as it should do , i was recently back in dublin and was blown away with how dominant the plough was in the sky , it dominates and takes over , the black sky is bigger and may feel stronger but through the infinite darkness of space appears the plough and ironically the darker and more hostile the universe will become , the brighter our plough will shine , the plough has always inspired the workers to be stronger than the darkness , lets keep it going and shine through .
