    Peeling paint is an unfortunate issue with 787s and A350s due to their composite structure. If you Google, you'll see some 787s covered in speedtape after paint repairs had been done. I guess this plane just hasn't had a moment to get to maintenance and get the paint patched. Adhesion is hard on carbon fiber and, purely my guess, the extra flex on these beautiful 787 wings doesn't help.

    • @Alexriga
      @Alexriga 3 месяца назад

      I afraid carbon fiber is big mistake...

    • @karlp8484
      @karlp8484 3 месяца назад

      It's mainly wing flex, note where the paint has fallen off - the wing area with the most deflection.

      All makes sense- surely we've seen lots of peeling paint on fuselages, just never knew it was kosher on top of a wing!

    Loved the "cats and shiba inus" part. I was thinking of "maneki neko" instead of cats, but then the whole thing might have been missed... LOL...
    I don't know about the ANA livery. I think the biggest issue is for the livery -- and the overall corporate identity -- to be associated with Japan. As you know, back in the '80s it was all about 3-letter abbreviations for brands, so they used 3 kanjis to cut short the name of "Zen Nihon Kuyu", which was styled as All Nippon Airways in English. But back then they did have the kanjis and the name Nippon in there. Then they did away with that for the sake of simplifying things. But eventually they realized they needed something to give roots to the brand, and used the tagline for when 787s came onboard and when they had a hardware and software redesign with the "Inspiration of Japan" line. I still think the brand fails to deliver in easy identification. In Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries people think it's funny for an airline to use a female name as a brand.
    At any rate, I enjoyed the video very much. Thank you.

    The 787 is notable for having very flexible wings made of CFRP. The wings really bow upwards a lot when flying; this perfectly OK and actually contributes to passenger comfort. But I don't think the paint likes it. Note the paint is missing where the wing deflects the most.

    • @idanceforpennies281
      @idanceforpennies281 3 месяца назад +5

      Two other factors: paint hardens over time so it's more brittle. The top of the outboard wing area is subject to a pretty intense low pressure so the paint is being sucked up all the time during flight.

    The bright yellow tactile paths you see in Japanese train stations, airports, bus stations, etc are for the sight impaired (blind). In addition, one hears in the background a continuous’”ding dong” chime to alert the sight impaired that a safe and special oath is available for their use.
    Japan seems years ahead re handicap aids. I remember hearing bird-like chirping sounds at Japanese crosswalks letting the sight-impaired kniw that it is safe to cross decades before I noticed them in the U.S. I have even seen handicapped public toilets in Japan with colostomy bag disposals.
    As for peeling paint on composite aircraft parts, I have noticed what looks like temporary tape until a scheduled maintenance.
    As for shiba inus, aren’t they cute? They look like a miniature version of a full grown 120 pound Akita.

    If you want to talk about airline liveries that hasn't changed all that much since the 80's, you gotta include Singapore Airlines along with ANA. Yes, like ANA, SQ has made subtle changes to their airline livery over the years, but its fundamentally more or less the same airline livery it was in the 80's. Its one of the few major airlines today to still retain a "cheatline". As for peeling paint, shrugs, yes not aesthically pleasing, but not really a safety issue, so not really such a big issue in my opinion. As for tight legroom, true, but honestly what do you expect on a short-haul domestic flight where they have to pack in the passenger volume to maximize efficiency and revenue? Just be thankful you don't have to endure that for a long-haul flight. :)

    • @tfft
      @tfft  3 месяца назад +1

      In concept, yeah, you're right about SQ- I think the reason I didn't think about it is simply how different it looks currently compared to in the 80s, even if technically, it's not that much different.

    • @MrTomcat104
      @MrTomcat104 3 месяца назад

      @@tfft The reason it seems different to you even when its not radically different in reality is the secret to the success of SQ's logo and livery. Its evergreen and doesn't really age. Its not a "fad" design that goes out of fashion with the season. Little changes you mention to the livery makes it look new again, even if the substance hasn't really change all that much. The same goes for ANA's design. As they say, if ain't broken, why fix it?

    Those seats (Recaro 3510A/CL3510A, after checking some marketplace sites) look more like a 30' for me. Usually Recaro is quite good in making the seatback pocket area look slim, compared to, let's say, the all-too-common Collins Spectrum used in GA and AK and Collins Pinnacle used in QG, MM, GA, TG, and CX. Perhaps that actually boosted legroom by an inch or two, which caused them to advertise it as 31'-32'?
    Idk if their newer Toyota Boshoku seats are way more comfortable or not. But if I were ANA, I would definitely go for a slimmer seat to fix the "room for improvement" points. Perhaps they can use those Toyota Boshoku seats or opt for a slimmer Recaro SL3510, SL3710, Geven Essenza, or Safran Z110i.

    • @tfft
      @tfft  3 месяца назад

      I would agree with 30", but if they are measuring pitch correctly (and legally in some regards) the seat back pockets have no impact on seat pitch- which is simply the measurement between the exact same two points on two rows of seats. Thanks for sharing ✈️

I say rain clouds. Second, yes the pealing paint is normal and safe, but not desirable. While composite wing panels have been around for decades the 787 and A350 use carbon fiber for their wings and the paint doesnt adhere well to the wings. I suspect the 777X will have the same issue when its around 10 years old although i did hear that they had found a better formulation.

      Air China also didn’t change much since 1988 besides making the logo larger

      That’s because none of those airlines existed before 1988 😅

    Why don't you take advantage of the new policy for foreigners in China where they can visit for 144 hours (6 days) withouta visa? Since the top-end hotel brands had their best property in China. For example, the Park Hyatt in Suzhou easily beat PH NYC by a mile. And it only costs 200-250USD per night. Like in China, for the money I spent one night in the Hyatt regency in Chicago can buy me a stay at PH Shanghai at one of the highest building in the world.

      Well, price is not the only determining factor- and I've had a visa for years. China is still a bit of a mess when it comes to international tourism post covid. I'm patiently waiting for that not to be the case. I'll be there next year.

    JAL is pronounced lika JA-l, not JAY-ay-el. On the other hand, ANA is pronounced like AY-en-ay.

      But I wasn't speaking Japanese 😉- Have never heard it prounounced as you said in colloquial English.

    What a terrible passenger experience in that cramped 787. Boeing have used the same flaps system since the 1960’s 777

      "Terrible" seems like a stretch lol
