You did the decent thing buying it back shows your not a rip off garage well done mate respect
You can do a lot of damage to an engine in a month if you try! The dent and cable-tied mirror would have made me slightly suspicious as to how the car has been driven! You have been very fair giving a total refund. Great video!😀
One is reminded of that scene of the 'Ferrari' in Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
I can do that sort of damage in a day
I sent this video to my mate who owns my local Hyundai dealership, as Kia's share the same engines and platforms. He reckons that this car hasn't had enough oil changes and the engine is toast. If you don't change the oil at book minimum, then it's game over. "New short motor" was his guess. If properly maintained these engines will do stellar mileages..😎👍
Take off the oil cap whilst idling. If any rings are gone there will be lots of blow-by (gas blowing out the filler cap hole).
Had same with one of these, only car had to bail on and send to Copart
Who drives a vehicle "THINKING" they are low on oil?
It never occurred to the owner to check it and top it up.
By driving it while dangerously low on oil they probably exacerbated whatever issue would had and I wouldn't have reimbursed him I would have prorated it. It's amazing how people expect perfection on 100,000 mile cars
Glad to see you’re back and raring to go. I moved house last year solicitors are getting worse…
Good to see there are other dealers like James at chops garage but I do think the people that owned this we're lucky to get a full refund even after denting it and cable tieing the wing mirror and says more about that person I think, great job👍
Could you use it as a courtesy car after fixing it? If a customer has an issue with a car that needs to be fixed under warranty a small run-around like the Picanto would be good enough for a week.
This is more than likely the PCV valve rather than piston rings, much easier and cheaper to fix, I'd look there first
I think you are spot on had a thicking agent in you serviced it and hay presto
I had exactly the same issue with a mk2 focus 2.0 petrol titanium I bought about 7 or 8 years ago, when they were still fairly modern. I had it a few weeks and the oil light came on, then I realised it was burning a litre of oil every 250 miles. I bought that from a Ford main dealer so it could happen to anyone. Thankfully they were really good and bought it back off me as well.
Have you checked the engine numbers?!
Nothing would surprise me these days!
Great video
Shame about that, it's a cracking little car. Yes, do an update please
Thanks ❤
Very surprised as I thought these Kia cars were bulletproof due to a basic engine
I’d probably put through the auctions my self and take a hit on it and just get rid of headache as you much more stuff to work on and soon make your money back on other cars
Good to see you standing by your reputation as others who see this vid will be confident in buying a car from you
Hello bro hope you are well, looking forward to seeing what you got for us today 🎉
All good mate, hope you’re well!
I've got the 5 door automatic picanto and it's a good little car. Perfect first car after passing my test
Joe Hi .. I'm supprised at this cars condition .. these Picantos are generally really good little cars .. this one looks like it's had a Hard life ! Regards Chris
They are good tough cars we had them as company cars we moved onto Rio's now but I drove a picanto for 3 thousand miles I really liked it
Shame that happened, definitely don't let it put you off Kia's tho! I had a Kia Cee'd GT for just over 2 years and the ONLY thing It needed outside of servicing was an aux belt 😁
Check pcv valve, could also be valve stem seals.compression test will give u an idea whether rings are gone.
check the pcv valve by pass it and run it for a few days
Almost definitely worth fixing the Picanto. Hadn't realised they did a 3 door version. Daihatsu parts - depending on what it is you might find same as Perodua or Toyota. Ford pistons - not sure of the application but would expect a reputable OE and aftermarket supplier like Mahle to do them.
My lad is ex Kia Tech & I showed him this video, he says its mire than likely the Piston Rings, the same engine is used on the Hyundai i10, cut your losses & get rid his words.
Tiny Three cylinder lumps are never gone last for big miles!! very nippy new cos you have to thrash them thats why they fail!!
You used to be able to get cords oil control rings back in the day, they deformed to the bore.
I think the engines for these things will be pretty cheap and small and easy to replace. I think due to the condition and MOT it is worth saving. A replacement engine will increase it's value and the wing dent is an easy fix (paintless I would think.. So you do that and make a small profit (maybe) or you scrap it for a few hundred. I think I would fix it if it's going to cost less than £1000.
These are the kind of losses that dealership owners have to factor when pricing their cars along with wage costs and overheads etc.
Id rather buy from a dealer than private seller any day.
Great advert for BM in showing what an honest dealer they are.
If it smokes under load its rings, if it smokes on the overrun its valve stem seals
The oil spitting out of the exhaust is normal on a kia.... It's Kia's patented anti exhaust corrosion system, can't believe you don't know that! Call yourself a car guy😂... O definitely do an update!!!
Its working very well then! 😂
Joe my wife had a kia soul 1.6 petrol it drunk oil 😂 delighted it got written off 👏 never buy another kia!! There crap 😑 enjoyed the video tho 👍
Seems a bit like it’s hit or miss
@@ShiftingMetal definitely mate 👌
used to put tights in mk1 escort diffs lol shut em for a few hundred miles lol Warranty back then was see the kerb u drive over its ur responsibilty lol!!!
On the next vid you can tell us oil was filled to hi and pcv pushed oil into exhaust got hot and started smoking . Mechanic found pcv problem .
With the mot for emissions you don't get as many smokey cars, back in the day we'll it was rife, smokey astra, datsuns, I sold a c1 a while ago and I topped his oil up foc all the time he had it, a friend paid 8k for an a3 sportine, we serviced it for him, a mth later it'd used all it's oil, I've been selling him a gallon a mth, he bought it privately and paid top brass.
I have exactly the same car with about 180.000 km, never no problems up to now and very low consumption too, it is Korea made same motor as in Hyundai I10, good cars but expensive parts. Service means everything , people wait too long (max 10000 km) or put the wrong (cheap) oil in etc and once the motor is damaged it can't be repaired no more. Better put another motor in and start all over again, it's a very small motor and there's a lot of place to handle.
Had a mk3 1.6 petrol mondeo with the same issue
The dealer replaced it with a scrapyard engine for me (which wasn't much cop either)
the previous owner probably used a product like liquid moly and then put in through the auctions, there is a lot of disguised rubbish going through at the moment, a full checkable history is vital as a lot of car history is doctored
You have a 4x4 Panda! Nice they race out the door here
Want it down there? No one’s biting my hand off for it yet!
These Kias and i10 Hyundais are great cars up until they reach 80k miles. High oil consumption, rattling timing chains and duff catalysts are par for the course there on afterwards. Such such a great shame, for as small cars go, this shape Picanto is a highly competent machine - but 100k miles seems to be they're mechanical limit.
Is it direct injection, if so then it might be a carbon build problem either in the valve gear or the oil control rings?
I would have given his money back less mileage and condition
Best thing to do. No arguments, just a refund and a happy customer. Once bought a nice Audi A4 2.0 ALT that, also, was burning more oil than drinking petrol. Traded it for a better car, happy customer I stayed (but never an Audi again, though)
Yes, VAG (and BMW) make crap and have done for over 30 years..
Petrol tsi engine has a known issue ..Audi diesel are a good engine !
Looks like it wasn't looked after with the new dents a zip ties for the mirror other wise it a nice car and worth a rebuild?.
I see alot of Kias with major engine issues. They are not a good engine.
I have to agree, the engines are pretty fragile, i known a few mates and family members that have issues with the engines. Including hyudai.
What about Ford EcoBoom and Peugeot Puretrash .. all makers spew a few dud ones out 🤔🚗🚘🇬🇧
@@Songbird.9591 i would say fords bad engines are worse than kias bad engines.
I have always had suzuki i wouldnt have any other but i would consider toyota or the older hondas too, but even those have had their fair share of shit engines, like suzukis J20 and J23 for e.g but the M13/15/16 are great engines and boosterjet K series are not bad either. Not keen on toyota diesels and honda earthdreams.
I have to disagree we had these as company cars at work and they were bombproof cars the amount of abuse they withstood we now have Rio's
@chucky2316 they are far from.bomb proof. I sell many. Last one I had had all sorts of issues. Even things like windows not working which us unheard of usually with Eastern cars
I think the previous owner knew about the problems, doctored it and put through the auction as there are no comebacks, why would you sell a car at auction with no faults, when you can get more with private sale? i normally only used to buy trade in cars from the dealership at auction, never a car put through from private buyer.
The classic tale of 3 cylinder engines unless it's a Toyota Aygo of course
Damn, I sold exactly the same car with 82k miles and struggled to get £3.3k had FSH too.
either auction or trade it on money you could do without. if was me id auction it take a loss walk away. not my call but id walk away let it be someone elses problem. good of you to buy it back alot of car dealers wont like a car supermarket dont they wouldnt even honour the 3 years warranty. good luck in your quest.
Yeah I think you’re right!
I used to sell cars for years. i'd be going down the route of putting an engine in it and put price up, someone will buy it as it's a nice looking motor, I'd have done the same with the full refund because they won't go away call you and they would come back and buy another car because you treated them well
its easier to get another engine i suppose
Something tells me the owner drove it within an inch of its life, dents and zip ties too? Id be like "bro wtf did you do!?".
If you watch u tubers their is a class action against kia and hyundai in USA over engine failures
The last owner has ragged it for the last month, cable ties and a dent are tale telling signs. You did the right thing buying it back to save your reputation.
HAVE YOU CHECKED THE PCV VALVE? That would burn oil. So would a turbo but these ain't turbo are they?
I haven’t but the workshop have checked it over
Would have deducted a reasonable sum for damage and mileage as Chops Garage did. Not your fault the engine is now misbehaving and the buyer got a nice month+ out if it...
💯! Can’t hire a car for free for a month and return it damaged !
Car dealers so scared of negative auto trader reviews !
most engines these days are trash especially 3 potters bigger compression thinner piston rings and some only have 2 piston rings per piston. the piston rings get gunked up with carbon and stic inside the piston with them. being so thin they have no strength to them so this allows oil to pass by the rings I had a peugeot that have a 3 pot engine and burnt oil like nobody's business.
Why would anyone opt for a three door car?
Valve stem oil seals or blocked crankcase breather, check those before you send it off
Valve stem wouldn't normally have it pissing oil out the back mate
It would be a bit of blue smoke on start up but nothing like that.
@@paulsheehan2998 agreed but if its the rings and its that bad surely it could be heard also, make sense?
@@russfoggan4092
Yeah it's an odd one for sure
Unless he's paying his mechanic in magic beans I'd steer clear and move it on.
It'll be ok for a mechanic who sells on but for a dealer, could get out of hand imo
They end up with oval bores bud, I had to go and get one back, I knocked it out cheap to a guy in the village and you'd see it smoking about, literally, drain oil out and block it, what isn't in it can't burn, if you understand me, I bought a mondeo from bca, no oil in it, soon as I put some in, well it was like a smoke screen, I once filled a smokey N reg fiesta with 8 oil, stp treatments, stopped it smoking tho and it ran OK. Looks like you've been legged up, if I look a pincicanto I rev the bollocks off it.
Yeah, just caught a bad one at auction, it happens I guess!
@@ShiftingMetal I rev the boll**ks off them bud then run to the back and have a sniff, you'll smell oil, at Aston barclay you've usually got a few mins when they bring the keys out, jump in and check what you can, just stood in the ring or on line doesn't really work, tbh a large proportion are rodents, you can soon blow 2k no bother.
Reach out to salvage rebuilds
Common weak point the engine lad has the ceed 1.6 started running rough tried everything changing coilpacks plugs full service, finally stripped engine down all valves were full off carbon cylinder 3 not closing so no compression washing bores with petrol . Luckily caught it before ring damage but still cost 1200 for top end rebuild and runs great but started losing oil again now, how far do you go ,good of you to give refund but it might be a lost cause .
Red KIA versus Red Polo ( chops ) Happens. Rare. No fun.
He shouldnt have a full refund. He’s had free miles for a few weeks. Also its quite possible he drove itwithout topping the oilwhen light came on further damaging it.
There is an issue with the Kia/Hyundai GDI engines, which is becoming apparent after a number of miles and a few years. a number of American and Australian youtubers have been commenting on this issue for sometime now, it appears that it is worldwide.seems like you have been caught in that loop.
Hi .. No the US ones are not this engine .. the Picanto is a Kappa engine which is generally a really reliable little engine 👍
Maybe you can find another used engine and out in
Fix it if possible
I hope you refunded with a mileage charge and not a full refund
At least you didn't get into another mess like with the Audi 🙄. It is the reality of the business you are in of a car going suddenly bad after you sell it with an unexpected issue. Maybe the seller to you doctored it up as you noted, but it seems to be more of a sudden failure. I hope the customer didn't cause it, like overrevving the engine, doing burnouts (check the tires and clutch). It will be tough to make money on this, more likely a loss when add in the mechanics' time, you time looking for an engine or parts.
No I don’t think it was anything to do with our customer, more likely the previous owner put some thick oil in before part exchanging it!
Give it to Jordan to replace his civic 😅
Cheaper to get another engine maybe??
Seems to be becoming well known about Kia and Hyundai engine problems especially petrols. Personally wouldn't waste time with it send it to auction.
He raced/thrashed it to the point of blowing up and thought im in the warranty period ill take it back 😒
Haha, I don’t think that’s the case this time
Have you pulled the dipstick out whilst running or taken off the oil filler cap,I would be doing that before condemning engine seeing as it passed emissions only a month ago
the customer you don't want,I reckon they turned up in a skoda at first viewing seeing the state the cars in now, please tell me it wasn't a teacher who purchased it,they ARE the worst
I haven’t tried it but I will. Customer was decent to be fair, just one of those bad luck things!
Wow, so much damage in such a short time. I expect it's been ragged to death 😂 Sorry but some people are idiots when it comes to cars. I had a 66 plate Picanto. Only had it a few Months as it was the worst car I ever owned. Full Kia service history, just over 30,000 miles and I had more problems with it than any other car I have owned. Kia are not all they are cracked up to be. They seem to have major engine and build quality issues as they get older 👎
In the space of 4/5 weeks that car has been treated like shit...dent, zip tie and probably red lined all over the shop
It's a shame as that's a really nice looking small runner. Great colour, nice alloys...
roll with the blows
City cars get most hammer and least care. Don't spend a bean on it.
Stick some chord rings in it, jobs a good un ! 🤣
😂 If I could get some I’d do it for a video at least
@@ShiftingMetal Triumph Acclaims and BLMC 1300 used to suffer the same problem and that's what we used to do, No problem getting the rings in those days. Good luck !
I'd bounce it mate
Not worth it
I think you’re right!
@@ShiftingMetal
It's a shame as it's a nice little car for someone
But as Kenny Rogers says, you got to know when to walk away, and when to run
Small engines will struggle to top 100 k. Avoid
Designed to last only 100000 miles than scrap man or new engine
There’s planned obsolescence for you - more profit for the company at the expense of the consumer…
Stick it back through the auction and move on easy
Change the oil & filter with half a bottle of Lucas oil stabilizer & in the auction it goes
should of knocked money off for damage
100 000 out of akia is normal
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🚘
Not surprised with the crap you buy/sell
😂 cheers cock
Be better chuck a engine in your man should do that in few days
Gearboxes and engines are rubbish on Kia and Hyundai used cars.
They seem very careless if they have that damage so quickly, I thought James deducts some money for mileage and damage when he buys a car back
Yeah, it wasn’t quite a full refund to be fair
Waste of time working on that engine, buy a used lump
BCA it
I bought a Picanto when they first came out. Worst car I ever owned. Seat adjuster broke. Teeth on handbrake ratchet snapped. 7 (yes 7) clutch cables snapped. Blew sidelight bulbs monthly. Final problem was intermittent throttle control fault, symptoms being that you could pull out of a junction and then it just went into tick-over. Kia just kept saying it was covered by the warranty so I should put up with it. It was dangerous. Eventually got them to take it back by stopping payments on the HP.
I bought one in 2004 honestly best car I have own. It never went back to a garage apart from Mots. 110000 miles trouble free
CHECK THE BREATHER FIRST
Buy an engine from a scrapper!!
Finding the right one for a cheap price is the issue
@@ShiftingMetal 4 cylinder cappa engines had no such issue 85bhp and not being screwed to get it !! all in the pursuit of getting cars under 100kgm for tax purposes we lost spare wheels a cylinder from most engines on small cars now that isnt even a thing!! governments play the car industry like a sodding fiddle!!
DISASTER but its lucky we got decent people like you who stick by there guns WELL DONE , regards
