    My friend bought this drill press for our shop, because the old one was getting old. I was watching your video when you showed the other drill press you have, and I was pretty shocked when I saw it''s exactly the same as our old one! What are the odds ahahaha. We live in Switzerland by the way, so not much around the corner.

    I bought this drill after watching this video. One of my Best purchases of 2019.
    It's hard to understand why not all drill presses use digital step-motors instead of belts. It's certainly not because of price or power, as this Bosh unit proves.

      Because frequency driven motors don’t actually have an increasing torque curve when slowed down. While a transmission system actually does increase torque when stepping down in speed. So in all, you lose speed and gain nothing. In this case the nothing is used to give the ability to drill harder materials.

    I was interested in this drill press when I noticed it in one of your videos.
    It's quite an odd tool in that it's Bosch green - seems quite specialised for a green tool which are normally the sort of DIY/home gamer range of Bosch tools. I can see the appeal of a drill press like this though, traditional belt/pulley drill presses can be a real hassle to change speeds.
    Thanks for the video, I'm even more interested in this drill press now :)

      @@ManorWood thanks for your reply mate by the looks of it it probably does but I would imagine the screw hole to stop the column from rotating from side to side will probably be mounted in the back and not in the front. its a much better design than the traditional drill press imo. I got a loan of an old Clarke drill press from my uncle and although its very good height adjustment between the base plate and the middle base can be a pain. not to mention all the mucking about when you want to change speeds. you should check out what this German guy done to his without hacking it up. ruclips.net/video/g5ZADSfxros/видео.html I am thinking of doing something like this but somehow still incorporating the original base to use as normal.

    Hi,
    Quick question, is the wheel and up and down motion smooth and controlled when operating it, or can you feel the teeth and jerkiness of movement because of that?
    Another one I have, when you let go the wheel will the machine go up on her own or does is stay in position, height wise, where you left it?
    Just received mine and it is certainly used not new one :(, with hard operating wheel, where the teeth can be felt and it does not come back up (the limiter is not engaged). Also the depth measurement is broken :(

    I liked you video on the Bosch drill.
    I've had one for about two years now and it gets daily use. I can say that it has many great features, but the digital depth read out no longer functions, it self zeros partway through the job. the laser is not accurate at all and only focuses sharply at certain heights. the head has significant sideways movement . If you have to raise the head to accommodate a longer drill bit when drilling concentric holes the alignment is lost. The rack and pinion used for raising and lowering often feels rough and starts to bind. If you are looking for accuracy then I would not recommend one of these drills.

    I really want to like this drill press but that amount of quill/bearing runout is, frankly, awful. I guess that's why the tool is dressed in Bosch Green not Bosch Blue. Now if they bought out a Blue line version without the runout I'd have it, even if it cost twice as much.

    I own one myself, but I am quite disappointed about the "play" in the spindle. If it were a lathe or other machine, I would say the ball bearings are worn out. Made in China...
    Besides, when you drill out the plugs, that should be done out on the edge of the plank. Then the sawdust will come out, less friction and less smoke. Best way to do this is using a thin piece of wood and cut the whole row of plugs off with the bandsaw.

    • @ManorWood
      @ManorWood  5 лет назад +2

      I have not had a problem with play for how in use the drill , this was a very old plug cutter which is why the smoke happen but still cuts usable plug and I thought the smoke looked good for RUclips :)

    • @ManorWood
      @ManorWood  4 года назад

      You can not

    • @paristo
      @paristo 4 года назад +3

      Actually you can. That is why you have the big hole in the aluminum table. You simply set drill on the sheet and then you drill through the table. This is where your laser and light comes very handy.
      This doesn't work if you mount whole drill to table. But you can't do that at all with those typical drill presses as your pole denies the sheet. Unlike this that you move on the sheet.
      This is reason why I keep my drill free floating on table.
      I don't now recall the hole diameter in the table but IIRC it was 35mm. So you can't use hole drills etc large diameter drill bits. But the typical ones works great.
      But I do recommend at larger surfaces a hand router.....

    I just got a PBD 40 as a birthday gift.
    Got a question, not sure if I can explain it clearly enough: when I rotate the wheel to move the drill press, I can feel the teeth on the rack (i.e. for every height of one tooth there is a slight "notch" in the feeling). If I move the wheel fast, I also hear a corresponding sound. Is it supposed to be like this, or should the rack&pinion system be fully smooth, like car's steering?
    Also, after moving the drill up and down on the column, parts of the column got covered with a thin layer of black residue (oil, I guess), I guess that's normal and I should wipe&re-oil from time to time?

      I drill and thread various alloys every day. My machine is rigid and accurate, fully manual, originally made in 1942. It's been modified and rebuilt, last time by me personally, and has a runout of around a tenth (.0001") with a Rohm keyless chuck. Going straight in with a quality drill, no reaming, results in a hole that's 1-2 thou over. This machine drills more than 1000 holes every month without skipping a beat, each hole as accurate as the last. That's professional performance. Actually, just checked a number of holes with gage pins yesterday, as I do fairly often. An inside mic is more accurate, but also takes more time. It's easy to see how the Bosch would suit a wood hobbyist. Someone like a jeweler, as well. I like it for what it is. The Nova, OTOH, IMO is a video game posing as a tool. No confidence in the product.

      @BischBaschBosch 6 лет назад

      Bosch's green range has a few tools aimed more at the workshop and hobbyists. Workbenches for example are only available in green. Unfortunately, Bosch have no intention of producing a blue model of this drill - I did ask. Part of the reason is that the blue division is aimed more at site work and construction so a bench drill press doesn't really fit with the range. Still, blue or green, this is quite a nice drill. I do sometimes wish it had a little more grunt, not that it's ever failed me in that regard.
