I bought this when it first appeared in NZ, before there Were any reviews, and I would say I'm 4/5 stars happy with the PBD40. I would like to make a couple of observations not covered in the Video above (but may have been noted by others before) : • While this machine sounds quiet and smooth on this video, Mine sounds like its grinding horse molars and brick shards, although the spinning of the chuck IS smooth. • The Hold down clamp is far less useful than it first appears: I ended up installing 'levelling feet' at each corner of the base, to raise it up so that I could use small F-clamps to secure any workpiece... • ...but the underside of the base needs to be blocked out with eg MDF before any clamp will sit square. • If you attach this to a bench, Swarf will soon collect under the base. • I think the Laser is just a novelty gimmick. It's a pretty handy wee bench drill press - just don't go thinking its actually high end gear. Cheers
Ahhh right! So one is blue and the other is green?!! Thankyou, out of all the reviews I've seen on this drill press, no one has ever cleared that up for me 😆
It’s a great little bench drill. I had a belt driven one for about 3 days before it got returned then bought this one and it’s definitely one of those tools you didn’t realise you needed and I use it all the time highly recommend it to everyone I speak to about drills… which isn’t as often as I’d like!
@@dainermade so hang on, do you mean you had the blue drill just a short while when you saw a video about the Bosch and bought it? Great video, very helpful, cheers and beers!!

Love your channel, its great, full of useful tricks and tips as well as punching out some bloody beaut items. Don't undersell your skills or you products, they're both worth paying a price for and in the end you have to make something out oth them so you can buy new toys and keep the beer fridge full. Keep the content comming.
I have this drill press and was trying to work out how I could drill into the end of long workpieces (e.g for dowel holes). I'm so glad I found your video! thanks mate
I use a lot of forstner bits to remove waste from oak and maple, I bought my Bosch drill specifically because it is brush driven, belts would slip all over the place at 500rpm.
"How do you like them apples" :D You've made my day! But seriously... I've been looking around for a drill press for like a year or so and one day I stumbled onto the PBD40 in a shop and fell in love with the design at first sight. It's got all I need out of the box. I'm going to buy one in a month or two for my shop that I'm setting up with my son. Kudos for the fun in the video!
The drill looks really nice and a good modern step up from the traditional drills. Unfortunately the throat depth isn’t big enough for what I do. I build guitars and need the reach to get to the middle of the body, to drill string holes or hog out material before routing pickup pockets. Pity as your new one looks more accurate as well, which would be great for me but stuck with the old stuff for now.
Loved the cameo from the wannabe Aussie! Your blue thing looks like my old green drill press I got for free from a friend who bought something like your green machine 🤣🤣
I've got the Bosch and like that I can store it away when I don't need it. If you get really creative, you can swing the drill head around and bypass the base plate. I used it to drill dowel holes into the ends of uprights for a bannister rail build last year by clamping them to the side of the bench and turning the drill head around. Just got to make sure you clamp the base plate so it doesn't tip over 😉
This press has worked like a charm for my projects ruclips.net/user/postUgkxajoEbapTfqWaadnqb04h6U576yxXp-FE . I didn't even secure it to my table top, mainly due to the fact that I was using a 15 lbs drill vise. It's not flimsy at all as to what others have claimed it to be. Make sure the locking nuts and levers are secured and there won't be any issues with light pressure and patience. I was able to drill through aluminum, plastic, and steel (steel took a while) with no problems at all. Yeah it took a little longer than a regular drill press, but I don't have the space OR the money for one.The instruction manual was worthless, but luckily assembling the press was intuitive. However, the manual would be good for ordering replacement parts if needed. There is a nice breakdown of the parts that are included in the kit. Before ordering, make sure it is compatible with your unit, it is clearly stated what models the press is compatible with. This was an excellent purchase for $40!!
Why doesn't Bosch do a cordless version of this? Light, portable, but you still have to find an outlet! Seems like a no brainer, hope something like that comes out in the future.
I don't know why any modern drill press still relies on belt drive... you'd think it'd be more expensive than the more powerful electric motors out there. I was sold on this guy since I saw it on Paul's channel and it is tops. The only minor negative thing is the red plastic handles interface with their metal bits is a plastic thread which I nearly stripped trying to give it a little extra twist, so be gentle with the handles!
I've had mine 3 years now, no regrets. It took me a while to pluck up the courage to plonk down that many spondoolics, but hey, buy nice or buy twice! You only feel the pain of buying it once, but if you buy a pile of crap you feel the pain every time you use it. Or you don't use it! For the $$$ you are also getting a drill table, an adjustable fence, and a hold down clamp. And a light. And laser cross-hairs. And a keyless chuck. And instant magic electric speed control. Those belt & pulley thingies seem so last century! For someone who only uses a drill press occasionally, the $$$ might be better spent elsewhere, but I use my drill press a lot. Your laser cross-hairs were spot on, mine were a bit off. I have adjusted them, now also spot on. There is a video on teh tubes showing to adjust these (the guy has a terrible cold, which grosses some people out, but you can't catch a cold vie teh tubes!). Basically you separate the two sides and top of the casing, then get access to the two magic electric laser thingies. You can loosen them with an Allen key, and rotate them until they are spot on. Looking forward to seeing yours in action.
I've had mine for a few months now, and it has a strong electrical burning smell but works really well. Does yours do the same? I'm hoping it's just because it's new.
There are two controls for speed. The variable control on the front and the speed/torque range lever on the right side under the wheel. There you can choose low speed/high torque or high speed with less torque. In position 1, the speeds range from 200 to 850 rpm and in position 2, you get 600 to 2500 rpm so between 600 and 850 rpm, either position 1 or 2 can be used. Position 1 will give more torque that position 2 in this scenario.
Alllll riiiigghhhhhtttyyy then. Blue verses green. Alllll riiiigggghhhhttttyyyy then. No poopoo valves were hurt in this video. Riiiiiigggghhhhhttttt 😂😂😂😂🍻🍻🇦🇺
Some users don't like the wheel instead of the 3 levers. I got a steering wheel knob from a not-very-expensive auto parts shop. The knob is useful for large movements, I'm OK with the wheel for precision work. Like most things, it takes a bit of getting used to.
My belt drive dinosaur drill is set on one speed and that's it. I hope more manufacturers are going the digital way, it makes sense, so does your video, nice one 👍
Hi, thanks for this. Perhaps you can help me with a small question? What is the distance between the pillar and the drill center / laser cross. I can't seem to find this information anywhere and I think it is relevant as to how far in on a piece of sheet material you can put a hole
Hey mate. Just searching the interwebs for a drill press. I’ve actually got this Green one and it’s given up the ghost. Sounds like miter has stripped gears. It’s not new though. And to be fair I think I should have been using low speed more often. How has yours held up.
Hi Mark I'm at a customers place doing some work for them and they have one of these but I can't get the depth stop to move more than about 5mm. Seems to be jammed in proper even though I've released the red latch thing (took it off completely in fact 🤣). So am having to use it without the return spring which is a pain in the butt. However yours seems to work great!
@@dainermade Yeah, I certainly don't! Such a shame coz it seems like a good drill press. Anyway I got it working by just loosening off the bottom red latch and using it without the spring return. Anyways, another good video and review Mark! And cameo by Tim 😅
Funny note is that there are two versions of Bosch PBD 40. One have a plastic cover for the chuck and one doesnt. Mine is savage edition without the cover.
Very nice comparison mate, I've been looking at this one myself because I've got the shitbox 3000™ ozito from bunnings, and given the many benefits, if I did choose to upgrade it would be to this, not the traditional; style, and I was also thinking that being gear driven instead of belt driven, it should have a lot more torque/slip a lot less, have you noticed this? Also a random anecdote; my dad was thinking about getting this one a few years ago for his metal work when his belt driven keeps on slipping in thick plate, and he can do all his drilling on his milling machine but setup takes longer, so he only uses it for making and fixing stuff on the farm and stuff for me
It has electronic speed control, so it doesn't bog down easily. I haven't tried on thick plate, but there is also a mechanical high/low range gearing. Lowest speed on low range might cope.
Hi, can this Bosch drill have its body swing 180 degrees around the main post to the back so that base plate is out of the way, to drill some thick or long stock, or dog holes on a bench? Thank you !
That looks like a nice drill press. I have drilled on an angle once. And ever since my thing isn't 90 degrees anymore🤣🤣 i think one of these would be nice in my shop
All the holes I've drilled for bolts, rods or dowels have been a snug enough fit that the use of a mallet has been required. That's good enough for me.
I've typically found the holes drilled with it are a snug fit. I think it's only potentially a problem for someone who needs extremely precise holes, typically with small bits in metal.
This was a cool video mate. I have to do a massive clean out of my shop. Haven't been in it for many, many months. I think it's been almost a year and a half. The weather is improving here in Melbourne so I think it's almost time to get back in there. Watching your videos keep pushing me to go back in there :)
I like that Bosch one better as well...the clamping action and not having to mess with belts and pulleys make life easier. First review? What about the clamps?
I don't think its really a fair comparison to show your two piller drills side by side as they are totally different in both there application and intended use. The main things going for the Bosch and ease of use, 2 speed gear box and speed control and portability. For people who don't need the extra torque or added features of of a rotating and leaning turn table with higher torque through using the gears; 12 - 16 gears on this size is not uncommon with a 13 - 16 mm chuck with internal taper for mounting other tools then you can see where I am going. The large piller drill is a machine tool while the smaller Bosch piller drill is basically a corded hand drill mounted witnin a fixed base stand and one step on from a drill stand. If you want ease of use and you don't want to drill much apart from wood at 90 degrees then go with the Bosch. If on the other hand you intend to do guitar making or metal work if you have the space and need to use it. One thing to remember the green gear in the Bosch range is their DIY range.
I have one, just love it, but still not been able to set up the drilling dept, watched this video a few times, but something still escapes me, that's the only thing, can't put my finger in what I'm doing or not wrong
Awe mate I canny believe you have a new machine!. I hope that you've realised that little bluey is going to turn you into a pro mallet maker!! All the handles from now on are not only gonna be straight but also dead central. Your customer's won't know what's hit them!!!. As always brother 💯% 👍 🇬🇧. P.s. No bandsaw, replacement drill etc. You keep going like this your going need your son's mate's back watching your video's 🤪🤣😜
Great review mate, still haven't got a drill press, and have generally coped alright, though i'd definitely benefit from one. If I had my time again before building my deck i'd have made my screwing in template from a drill press, as mine wasn't quite perfect with the hand drill and it keeps me up at night. You and fingers both have this now, and doesn't seem to have any drawbacks other than the cost, buy once cry once though right. Cheers
The Bosch drill is certainly a newer design and certainly weighs less pounds than the blue one... but it has a problem, it can stop when you're drilling large holes at a slower speed

All the holes I've drilled for bolts, rods or dowels have been a snug enough fit that the use of a mallet has been required. That's good enough for me.
@@dainermade 7 months on, any feedback on the runout?
I've typically found the holes drilled with it are a snug fit. I think it's only potentially a problem for someone who needs extremely precise holes, typically with small bits in metal.
You crack me up. Great video Thanks
Where did you get bosch bench drill ?
This was a cool video mate. I have to do a massive clean out of my shop. Haven't been in it for many, many months. I think it's been almost a year and a half. The weather is improving here in Melbourne so I think it's almost time to get back in there. Watching your videos keep pushing me to go back in there :)
I'm in Melbourne too. You oughta build a waste oil heater (or ask a mate nicely that can!). 🍻
Cheers mate. Not really a side by side review, it’s why I changed my drill. That’s all
Have you tried on metal sheet?
I want the green one, but doesn’t appear Bosch sell US model. I guess I could get a step up transformer, not sure if that would work.
Definitely on the wish-list.
the green will need replacing after it breaks and the blue will be able to be fixed. Good vid.
@@dainermade Hahaha 😆 nice one buddy 👍 keep it up.
Hi Mark can you talk a little bit more about your new belt sander. What model and specs?
Very good. Chinese copy is Z950
Love your content mate as it’s informative with some humour thrown in!! Keep up the awesome videos 👍🏻😎
Cheers
Hey mate, still loving the drill press ? Any issues ? Thinking of buying myself one for Xmas 👍
until 4 mins in i thought the old one was floor standing lol
The Bosch drill is certainly a newer design and certainly weighs less pounds than the blue one... but it has a problem, it can stop when you're drilling large holes at a slower speed
Top video great viewing
It's portable and has excellent Repeatability.
Since watching your channel I’ve started saving £ on timber and became a bit of a bin raider for pallets 😂 and I guess I’m saving the planet a little so go me eh. Got a question for you mate what brand of specs do you wear and do they stay on your face while working in the shop? Cheers for the great videos from Scotland 🏴 👍
@@dainermade thanks very much for that mate i recently got a replacement pair but there no good as I’m always pushing them on my bloody face think I rushed buying them at the shop so I think I’ll treat myself to those, they look smart. Your channel is brilliant by the way
I got a great deal on a standing drill press, but I don't have room for one that size.
The drill is very delicate. Plastic parts are going to break if you are kinda strong man. You have to be very gentle with aluminium parts as well...
Do you still like it?
Yes indeed
its an absolute ripper the bosch. How happy is that youre getting straight holes now eh? Still not regretting the bandsaw sale? haha
Need to update your tool list ;-)
Sold me
I have basically the same machine it is sold in Lidl under the brand Parkside, otherwise identical.
But not same quality 😁
@@felix807 Do you mean not as good or better? In any case as an amateur occasional woodworker it is sufficient for MY needs and will last me many years, I’m 76 and see no point in paying for “top quality” and more functionality that almost certainly will never be used.
@@davidiand7 i'm so poor to buy crap things 🤣. Lidl is a market store lets say, you go there to buy anything, but not tools. Parkside is a cheap copy. Waste of money.
@@felix807 Well you are entitled to your opinion but as far as I am concerned for MY requirements they are value for money I have bought several power tools from them and all perform to my satisfaction. If I was professional and used power tools every day I would spend money on professional tools, besides which I am a pensioner and have a limited budget.
40% off on Amazon right now…. I am so tempted but I feel like I won’t use it
...aaaaaand, it's not available here in the US. So many cool tools aren't.
NOT available in US :(
Now if I could just buy one in the US ....
Can't beat those Germans
That said, doesn't look like this model or anything like it is available in the US
She looks like a beaut though. Nice video.
How much torque does this thing have at 60 RPM? I would love to get one of these and run it slooooooooooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww to keep my apartment mates happy...
If You ever drill harder materials, forget the Bosch. Worst tool ever purchased, to much play, its all over the place. I am going to buy a 40-45KG cast iron lump.....
That's what I was thinking nothing beats cast iron from its stability and with a good chuck it'll go through anything
PBD40 is known to be a wobble garbage unfortunately (with some hacks improving it).
yeah, crackabuttiebonza mate!
Good design but not for mortise on wood
I was gonna give you thumb up but those pop up comments are f....g enjoying.
@@dainermade
Those ad on in your video, you can call them what ever you want, some people find them funny, I don't know why. Like Oooo right, etc. If I want to watch some funny stuff I watch Dave Chappelle or Jeff Dunham. I rarely leave comments but for some reason I could not resist to tell you that. Keep up with your videos, keep it in mind lots of people are like me, never comment but don't watch channel any more. Didn't mean to be rude to you if it's sound like that my apologies.
Cheers.
for woodworking ok, but for even light metalwork the bosch just isnt sturdy enough
@@dainermade well, was a personal remark, i once considered it but its high practicality not high quality
It's definitely sturdy enough for light metalwork.
@@loganmedia1142 well, what do you call light metalwork? If i want a hole in a piece of sheet metal a normal drill is enough, but lets say 5mm aluminium sheets and i want a decent finish, thats another story...
I like the PBD 40 and have been using it for several years, but the chuck which comes with the machine is a joke. It's not made for bench drill, it is made for impact hand drills. Change the chuck to something better, like I did. ruclips.net/video/nCqVoaGVK8g/видео.htmlfeature=shared
I was looking at getting me a smaller bench drill D mate .. I was just gonna buy me one of those cheap nasty ones from Screw Fix here in IRELADN for 109 Euros but I love the look of this one mate..
I never commented on ur video about the shit they spray on pallets but I was in a job where pallets were being HT'd while COVID 19 was rampant bro.. They did it for 2 years and then just stopped .. LMAO.. This BROMIDE shite sounds dodgy as fook man.. I don't trust the GOV to tell me the truth so fook those bastards.. If ur man Andy is being completely truthful and u know how well enough and haven't just met him online and never met in person then I'd be worried about the research he was really doing or what he truly knows about this BROMIDE stuff and when it disappears into the atmosphere or whatever it's supposed to do D mate.,
That worrIEs me tbh but I'll take a swing by some information and do my own research on it.. Thanks fort the heads up though bro bcos I never thought of this issue when it comes to working with pallet wood.. I've only really begun so I'm ok for now,, The dust from the pallets is another concern but I have the PPE u spoke of with the proper masks and shit D mate.. I'll be wearing them from now on.. Righty I'm done with that now mate and I wanna say to all the wankers, ahem sorry HATERS who come at this man everyday just bcos he builds nice pieces out of PALLET WOOD so behave yourselves u shower of bellend lickers and be happy u have a bloke here willing to teach u a little something that may come in handy when u lose ur job and u need to earn some money to feed ur skinny boney hole..
Anyways D mate u keep making these awesome bloody videos mate and as my old man used to say before he passed and he was brilliant with his mits too mate.. He always said do what u want to do and be happy while doing it.. FUCK THE BEGRUDGERS TOO he would finish that little saying off with.. He was a crazy bastd too btw.. D mate I salute u my bro.. Ur kid is a funny little dude too.. Keep making the vids and keep showing ur brilliant work too.. U worked hard to get here and don't allow any little bellend to come here to mess it up on ya mate..
Massive respect to ya from an IRISHMAN trying to find his way in this Woodworking lark .. LMAO.. I'm gonna get there one day too mate.. Stay safe and keep washing those mits bro especially with all that BROMIDE floating about i n the air.. LOL
Oh and apologies for such a longwinded comment too btw.. I'm not apologising to those pesky haters tho
lol can't buy in the us lol.
Yeah right, good stuff but $$$$$$
Worth it for me.
Good video but the repeated Timmy is Veeeeery annoying...
