What about individual atoms though? Does carbon's valence electrons repel each other to form a tetrahedron? If not, why? Thanks.

Hi The Ghost of SW627, great question. I don’t know. That gets into quantum mechanics for the movement of electrons in an atom (Heisenberg principle and Schrodinger’s equation). I recommend visiting with a physical chemistry professor and get their thoughts. Thanks!
