Something that I have noticed since the bye week is that the run defense starts really soft and then starts to lock in after halftime, usually with a couple big tackles for loss. Not sure if it is adjustments, competitive juices, or just dumb luck but they have had a few really good second halves in a row.

Against Philadelphia, some was due to no Hurts and an offense that started working forcing the Eagles to try to keep up. Atlanta was pretty much about our offense controlling the ball and scoring so Atlanta had to keep up. Dallas? Hey, their red-zone fails are why we were in position to win it in the end.

This is going to come off as super simplistic, but this game comes down to 3rd down. Week 1 was so long ago that I couldn't figure out how we lost by 17. I look back at all of the statistical comparisons, and most of them appear close.
Then I get to 3rd down efficiency and it becomes crystal clear. The Bucs were 85% and we were 44%. BALLGAME. It's as cliche as "win the line of scrimmage" and "win the turnover battle" but if we're going to do anything Sunday night, we're going to have to be MUCH better on 3rd down.

However, 3 of their 9 conversions came due to penalties on the defense and 4 more came from the arm of Baker (albeit the 4th was available because we had just let them run all over us). Looking at our stats, it looks more like a consistency problem. We either destroy the run or give up a big play (TFLs or bust).

That was one of my big notes from that game. 3rd downs killed. Gotta be better, which of course starts with being better on early downs to make it a harder task.

I've noticed that there are always gap control problems or missed tackles on 1st and 2nd down. Also instead of bullrushing upfield every down, play more parallel to the line of scrimmage, instead of going for the tackles for loss. I'll take a no gain or 2 yard gain vs giving up 8.

It’s not that easy. 1) that mentality means you slow your pass rush 2) that also means you fire off the ball in a way that the OL comes at you and you get pushed down the field. 3) your best players are penetrators and you now have sacrificed that ability. So yeah. Not that easy.

    • @kobeyovr21

@craighoffman Wouldn't it stand to reason that if you keep charging hard upfield on every down, that the line will still gas itself when it comes to the pass rush? Not to mention the fact that Mayfield is mobile enough that if you charge up field and lose contain he can beat you with his arm and legs, as well as being veteran QB savvy enough to catch you in personnel changes.

Last week Hoffman said it was as simple as moving Payne to the end. Voila. Run game issues fixed. That’s how we “stopped” Bijan, right? At least you’ve gotten back to common sense viewpoints. Thought you were going looney
