Mid Towers and Platter Spatter are my favourite steep runs at Mt Hutt. I actually made it to the bottom of Mid Towers on my very first attempt and I was over the moon that day as I had brand new skis and boots on too. I did have many other attempts that were not successful but on the positive side of that I developed a technique of spinning myself around and digging my ski into the snow like a bulldozer blade to stop myself. It was many years later I read that its done by extreme skiers to stop themselves when falling and the technique is called "Self Arrest". Oddly enough I don't think its taught in Ski Schools. I did have a lesson some time after my reasonable confidence with Mid Towers and it did help reduce the number of falls I had as the instructor said you have to stand up tall and I told him I was confident doing that on a groomed run but not so much off piste. During the lesson he had me skiing so fast off piste it felt like I was on groomed snow as I had to focus on not losing him rather than any fear of the rough terrain. The groomed run Platter Spatter I have had very few falls on in comparison due to that being only groomed when grooming technology became advanced enough to do it using a winch I think. I have done the South Face but have never felt that relaxed on it due to it being more rocky terrain.
Some rough timestamps for later review and others to use: 0:46 Summit Six chair/pod overview 1:10 South Chutes/Towers 3:16 Mid Mountain groomed runs (eg Fascination) 5:09 Virgin Mile 7:17 Bob's/Bluffs/Rakaia I actually was at Mt Hutt when this came out and had the opportunity to do Chair Bowl (4:27) on your recommendation - definitely agree that this was nice and uncomplicated Intermediate terrain (with a great view too)!
Platter Splatter is my favourite by far. And I can tell you, I can get there every time (unless some boarder takes up the whole road!) without walking.
@@SRGSkiing I'm Australian, so I pretty much ski in NZ exclusively. Hence the thinner skis. I'm planning on going to the US for the 25/26 season. I'll take a couple of skis for that. I've been watching your other videos, trying to decide where.
