Exactly! Thank you for your wonderful comment ❤️ We thought this performance was absolutely beautiful, and neither my mom nor myself took offense by this.
The problem with this performance is that it perpetuates the stereotype of the docile, subservient East Asian girl found in works such as Madama Butterfly and Sayonara. Katy Perry's character will love unconditionally, because that's what East Asian girls do... It's orientalism. It's exoticism. And ultimately it's dehumanizing a group of people by stereotyping and fetishizing them.
1. Fetishizing a race of people is wrong because it strips away the individuality of the people within the fetishized race. You (not you personally) are seeing individuals within the fetishized race, not as individual people with unique traits and personalities, but rather, facsimiles of a mythical sexual creature from your imagination. And refusing to treat individuals as distinct and unique people is a bit repulsive. Other instances of fetishizing can be less harmful. For instance, having a foot fetish doesn't intrinsically ascribe traits and personalities on a sexual partner. However, I still find it problematic, because it can mean an obsession with feet to the exclusion of personality. In this instance, the sexual partner is seen, rather than as an individual human being, as merely a sexual object. 2. I'm sorry if it wasn't clear. I'm not saying that I hold the belief that East Asian girls are docile and subservient and love unconditionally. I'm saying that the Western works I mentioned in my comment portray this stereotype, and that Katy Perry's live rendition of the song perpetuates this stereotype by drawing the parallel between loving unconditionally (as per the content of the song) and being a East Asian girl (as per the performance setting). You may want to say that Katy Perry drew this parallel through "a respect and understanding of Confucian culture... that is admirable," but the similarities in key scenes between Madama Butterfly and this Katy Perry performance convince me that her performance leans more on older Western works that portray East Asian culture rather than the doctrines and beliefs of the East Asian cultures themselves. 3. I am trying to control how people think and live. Why else would I read? Why else would I write? I'm sorry that you found my opinions to be nothing but platitude.
+Martin Luther tell me again how is it fetishizing? All I can feel from the performance was a performance performed using the Japanese culture. It is portrayed how the traditional Japanese culture was and none of the individuality was stripped. If you're saying her outfit was fetishizing, I Guess you should do a little bit more research on outfit of both Chinese and Japanese costumes. She is not fetishizing and you're saying she was doesn't make u fetishizing them yourself?
+rEaR vIeW something that is less worn does not mean that they should stay that way. Does that mean we Chinese men are not allowed to wear tuxedo because we do not represent English men or Japanese women aren't allow to wear evening gowns cause they may appear too sexual? Well no, y'all need to stop telling people to wear what they wanna wear, it's for performance purpose,y'all need be more open minded okay, enjoy the performance.
i don't think we ever saw something like this not only on AMAs, but on VMAs, Grammys or EMAs... - this right here is the most underrated performance ever, the outfits, especially katy's, the visuals behind, the real asian instruments, the real asian people as dancers, the umbrellas, the flashing light as she spins with one, the cherry flower confetti falling, the dancers hanging there and spining, the whole ass set, THE DISSAPEARING AT THE END
I guess I'm confused at what video you watched lmao. There were not people of Asain decent on that stage. Even the drummer was white. I see 1 instrument the drum that's being played, the rest are just being held by random people. The stereotypes are rough but im sure yall love it. I'm just glad we're smarter now. She is definitely

Because of the theme in the performance. They're saying its cultural appropriation but they don't know Katy actually did it as an homage to Japan due to a bad earthquake they had. She wanted to show all the beautiful things from Japan that are often overlooked
+ChaoticButterfly Actually, yes I think the taiko drums were a perfect addition to the song and embraced the culture well, at least for me. I've grown up with eisa (taiko) and seeing the drums really made me happy. It may not have a significant meaning for you, but it does for me because it reminds me of home and all the friends and family I have loved unconditionally since childhood also for me what was really beautiful were the cherry blossoms. In Japan, sakura are so delicate and beautiful. to me it was a perfect way to describe this song. While some people are leaving rude comments and bashing on her for this performance (on RUclips and elsewhere) it made me like her even more. So thank you Katy Perry for a beautiful song and performance! :)
THIS IS PERFORMANCE ART!!! That sudden dark set and falling cherry blossoms reminded me of Grave of the Fireflies movie. So chilling and awesome at the same time.
Everyone talking about culture appropriation and racism.....but here in Japan we give 0 fxxxs about this. I just thought it was a very cool and modern performance with hints of Japanase/Chinese elements
+川畑徹 It's popular in Japanese and Chinese culture to promote their culture within other countries. They love Americans, Africans, Canadians, Russians, etc. embracing their culture. Many Asian-American stores sell traditional Asian outfits so Americans can embrace their culture. It's called culture appreciation not culture appropriation. Some stupid people think all white people do is be obliviously racist and full of themselves being prejudice. This culture appropriation shit on the internet needs to stop.
+Keanu Marinas Yes I agree some people are taking it to the extremes....it may be culture appropriation but the asian community is not getting harmed from it nor getting something "stolen" from them in my opinion
+Keanu Marinas how is this cultural appreciation? she doesn't even know anything about it! i can guarantee you if you asked her questions about the kimono she wouldn't know shit! thats cultural appropriation! why doe she feel she has to be the one to wear the kimono? why coudln't she sing while ACTUAL japanese women wore the kimono!
As a Japanese, this is a very beautiful and wonderful performance.I don't think many Japanese living in Japan regard this as a cultural appropriation .This is because I can tell that she researches and respects Japanese culture.I feel very angry and uncomfortable when many Westerners mix up all Asian cultures and use them as "Asia," but I think she used Japanese culture correctly in this performance.👍👍
I disagree, her dress is a mix of Chinese and Japanese garments. Besides her stylist said in an interview, that she dressed up as a Geisha. That shows me, that she didn't do the necessary research in order to perform respectfully towards Japanese culture.
@@juliah.5385 Where do you see Chinese in that garment? The fabric is a typical Kimono print and fabric, the cut is a bit modernized and adjusted so she can easily move across the stage but it isn't something you wouldn't see in Japan... it's not like she was trying to depict an historically accurate Geisha or something. It's a Pop music performance. Maybe watch some Hamasaki Ayumi or Kouda Kumi performances, they wore similar clothes and performed in a similar way in the past too.
@@bodo887I wouldn’t say it’s disrespectful but definitely not appropriate. Correct me if I’m wrong but the song has nothing to do with Japanese culture and especially Geisha culture. People love to use other culture to be aesthetic or to feel some sort of artistry. In the case of Katy Pery she def use Geisha culture as a prop to complete her artistry. And this is why imo this is wrong.
@@hayu6788 As I said it is a POP music performance and Katy Perry never claimed to depict a Geisha or historically accurate representation of Japanese culture as far as I know. If you watch Japanese pop artists you will see many Japanese women performing in similar fashion as Katy Perry, so she is wearing a style that is accurate to Japanese POP culture. Watch anime, the characters also don't always wear historically accurate costumes....
It wasn’t until I saw/heard this performance that the timing and musicality of the song made sense to me. It always sounded like it was dragging, but now hearing the original with this performance in mind, it’s one of her best songs!
This performance was really cool! I wish this version was on Spotify; I feel like the shamisen and bamboo flute and drums really bring it to another level.
I swear, i live for the lightning scene where she dance with the parasol and then she stood and reveal her face after then smile. This is why i love the performance so much. The taiko and string instruments are lit too.

I loved it! Lots of Japanese people liked it. All she did was use Japanese culture because she thought it was beautiful everyone was overreacting to this. She can dress up and include whatever culture in her performance as long as she respects it and I don’t see anything disrespectful in this performance she loved the culture so she included it in her show.
Salad Yun dude, calm down. Im asian American, but I'm not offended. I love the way she showcased Japanese culture here, it was beautiful and magical. You can tell a lot of research and thought went into this stage. I love to see Asian culture represented positively in American media. Cause for so many years we were always the evil kung fu warriors in the white martial artist's way or a nerdy kid or just a one line stereotype. This was a nice change to finally see our culture on the big screen being represented respectfully and beautifully.
an asian person and an asian american person have completely different experiences. an asian person lives in a country where most people share their culture, race and ethnicity. asian americans don't. we are marginalized and a minority.
I don't see why anybody would take offense to this I mean there were clearly black people and asians in the performance as well lol. Culture needs to be shared and experienced anyways to make the world more diverse.
joseph, i’m going to safely assume you’re a white person. there’s a clear way to appreciate and spread culture without appropriating it and offending those in which the culture belongs to. i’m an east asian person and i’m telling you here and now that i’m fucking offended and you, i’m assuming, are not asian and therefor it’s not your place to say whether my culture can be spread or not. next.

When I think back on live performances that I've seen, Katy Perry's are most frequently in mind. Not only is she an amazing singer, but she is a brilliant entertainer. If her voice isn't enough to influence some emotion out of you, then her theatrics are. She is uniquely herself in every way.

Late comment. I know. But it was getting on my nerves for the past fews weeks of seeing this video 2 weeks ago. I don't like how all the people are offended. A youtuber named Yuta made a video saying what do Japanese think of Katy Perry komino performance? They thought it was amazing and took no offence. I refuse to believe they were lying because all the Japanese people I have met are pretty nice. As in America, they have no problem calling her a weeaboo. I don't understand because all I see in this video is creativity and a good performance. Some of the stuff in here isn't even Japanese. I don't even know what idiot came up with weeb in the first place but if my friend wants to live in Germany and study the culture, someone would say AMAZING! But if I want to study Japanese culture, I get called a disgrace. Is it just because of the anime? Anyway, thank you to that 00.1% who read my ramble comment but either way I hope you have a nice day. I am sorry for taking up your time and going off topic.
I like Japan and Japanese culture and I am not into anime or Japanese pop culture. I am more interested in the traditions and if I could travel to Japan I would be seeking ways to participate in things like the tea ceremony, visiting shrines, hopefully get to see a geisha show, etc.
She might not be the best singer that ever lived, but to me she is the best performer that ever lived. What a spectacle! Always an incredible performer, you can always count on that. Plus her voice is a lot better when she isn't dancing and running around. She's a lot better then a lot of other pop singers.
HUNconditionally... but seriously though her voice is really powerful. And the stage was so beautiful, every detail was so well done according to the Japanese style. And I don't find any problem with her kimono, so what if there are slits on her legs and chest? She has to move around and perform right? People need to chill it's just a performance.
I agree but there was really no reason for the slits on the chest XD, it was a great performance. People tend to think too much and get into unnecessary criticism
This is beautiful...the elegance of the kimono and the background clashed with the song so perfectly...by far the best katy perry preformance ever...so glamorous...she even reflected the beauty of japanese culture perfectly

日本人からしたら涙が出るほど最高に嬉しいです😭😭😭美しい😭😭😭💓💓💓
i don't think we ever saw something like this not only on AMAs, but on VMAs, Grammys or EMAs...
- this right here is the most underrated performance ever,
the outfits, especially katy's,
the visuals behind,
the real asian instruments,
the real asian people as dancers,
the umbrellas,
the flashing light as she spins with one,
the cherry flower confetti falling,
the dancers hanging there and spining,
the whole ass set,
THE DISSAPEARING AT THE END
I guess I'm confused at what video you watched lmao. There were not people of Asain decent on that stage. Even the drummer was white. I see 1 instrument the drum that's being played, the rest are just being held by random people. The stereotypes are rough but im sure yall love it. I'm just glad we're smarter now. She is definitely
@@Alexp36500 with that glasses of yours you still can't see and choose to spread Misinformation, The Intro itself has a Japanese instrument playing goodness it really weird people like you say about something without even researching
@gregory2190 I don't need to spread misinformation 😂😂. She's literally appropriating a culture that she should not even be involved with. She's literally the UKs ambassador for Asia. Why?!?! Who df knows! She's white as snow, from a very Christian background, she has no business being an ambassador to anything, not even music with that imperfect pitch. You believe vaccines cause autism too huh? 🙄🙄 go about your business, this is gross and unfortunate to watch. I'm sure she's quite embarrassed now
@@gregory2190 I also can't believe you tried to make fun of me by talking about my glasses. What are you 12?!?! Grow the f**k up. It is 2023 if you can't come up with better insults than that you're fixing to get your little feelings hurt like a mofo sl*tbucket
@gregory2190 w/o researching?!? Dumb b**ch I watched the video. What other research did I need? I watched a white woman appropriate a culture with ALL white dancers and ALL white musicians with a big drum like she's seen in the fake movies 100 times. Stop it. You look ignorant af
Japan is one of the most advanced and intelligent soceities. That's why this didn't offend them. They all have brains.
Thank you EXACTLY

素晴らしいステージだと思います。日本の四季が美しいように、この曲もまた美しくお互いが共鳴していると感じました。日本を好きでいてくれてありがとう。
it's a beautiful perfomance, I dunno why some ppl are hatin on this. the internet I guess.
Because of the theme in the performance. They're saying its cultural appropriation but they don't know Katy actually did it as an homage to Japan due to a bad earthquake they had. She wanted to show all the beautiful things from Japan that are often overlooked
Like what? Fans and Geisha and Taiko drums?
+ChaoticButterfly Actually, yes I think the taiko drums were a perfect addition to the song and embraced the culture well, at least for me. I've grown up with eisa (taiko) and seeing the drums really made me happy. It may not have a significant meaning for you, but it does for me because it reminds me of home and all the friends and family I have loved unconditionally since childhood
also for me what was really beautiful were the cherry blossoms. In Japan, sakura are so delicate and beautiful. to me it was a perfect way to describe this song. While some people are leaving rude comments and bashing on her for this performance (on RUclips and elsewhere) it made me like her even more. So thank you Katy Perry for a beautiful song and performance! :)
Christyna Sakura
My point was, I don't see how these things are "overlooked." Japan is well-known for Geisha, fans, _and_ taiko drums...
+ChaoticButterfly sorry, I misunderstood your first comment
We miss when artists made great performances like this❤
THIS IS PERFORMANCE ART!!! That sudden dark set and falling cherry blossoms reminded me of Grave of the Fireflies movie. So chilling and awesome at the same time.
How can it be a cultural appropriation? It makes me feel more proud to be an Asian 💕 #spreadlovenohates
I've watched this 10 times and i never get bored
+川畑徹 This is called cultural appreciation. All she's doing is embracing their culture, not appropiating it and making it her own.
+Keanu Marinas Im not saying you are wrong lol I meant that some people may call it culture appropriation, but there is no harm from it
+Keanu Marinas how is this cultural appreciation? she doesn't even know anything about it! i can guarantee you if you asked her questions about the kimono she wouldn't know shit! thats cultural appropriation! why doe she feel she has to be the one to wear the kimono? why coudln't she sing while ACTUAL japanese women wore the kimono!
katyが好きだから日本風のステージでとっても嬉しい。いろいろ批判もあったと聞いたけど、katyなりに日本を想ってくれた、素晴らしいステージだと思う。これからも応援しています。日本語でごめんなさい。

As a Japanese person I found this Preformance beautiful.

The Japanese theme here goes great w/ the song in my opinion.
Heart Girl Gamer -Kylee - right!!!!! I thought I was the one who thought that!!!!!!
It's very beautiful
I personally wish they'd done some instruments with the track. It compliments it so well!
It wasn’t until I saw/heard this performance that the timing and musicality of the song made sense to me. It always sounded like it was dragging, but now hearing the original with this performance in mind, it’s one of her best songs!
yeah and it just looks great, some people just love to hate things for no reason
This performance was really cool! I wish this version was on Spotify; I feel like the shamisen and bamboo flute and drums really bring it to another level.
Dang. Katy Perry's concerts always look like they're a lot of fun to see.
I swear, i live for the lightning scene where she dance with the parasol and then she stood and reveal her face after then smile. This is why i love the performance so much. The taiko and string instruments are lit too.
Thank you Katy for representing our culture so beautifully.
Madonna did it first.

Please Katy, never stop doing what you do! You are one of the best entertainers of our time!
This is cultural appreciation, not appropriation.
Ya se disculpo

And people make this mistake a lot. Always think in the most negative way. But it is indeed appreciation.

The Voice and Tone 😍, she definitely deserves a Grammy!
Why is there an award show in the middle of a Katy Perry concert 😂😂😂 jk jk jk love you queen Katy Perry
I loved it! Lots of Japanese people liked it. All she did was use Japanese culture because she thought it was beautiful everyone was overreacting to this. She can dress up and include whatever culture in her performance as long as she respects it and I don’t see anything disrespectful in this performance she loved the culture so she included it in her show.
Pastelli Plays yass agreed
Culture needs to be shared and experienced anyways to make the world more diverse.
joseph, i’m going to safely assume you’re a white person. there’s a clear way to appreciate and spread culture without appropriating it and offending those in which the culture belongs to. i’m an east asian person and i’m telling you here and now that i’m fucking offended and you, i’m assuming, are not asian and therefor it’s not your place to say whether my culture can be spread or not. next.
This my favorite performance of KATY PERRY EVER!!!!!
I really enjoyed this when it was first on the AMA's. Visually stunning production.
here she didn't try to act like she styled the culture, I think she was appreciating here
The whole stage and performers are just gorgeous and flowing!
This performance was so breathtaking
It’s been years but I come on here to watch this video once a while. Great performance, from the people dancing with the fans, the drummers, the huge peacock tail things, those suspending in the air, the raining feathery things, the hot balloon things, and Katy herself, everything was great!
This woman's voice is so strong and raw at the same time
Undeniably one of the best awards show performance in history 🙌💯
I watched this when it first aired on tv and I loved it and often come back to rewatch it here. I’m Asian and I loved it then and still love it this many years later.
This is the most underrated performance ever, and Katy's best, probably my fav of all time.Nobody did anything like this to this day,and people should've talked more about it,and not in a bad way
i love the japanese instrumental in the beginning
It's a shamisen your welcome o3o
DEFINITION OF POP PERFECTION
Probably one of, if not, the best live performance by Katy Perry ever! ❤
this performance is just so aesthetically pleasing and she's so beautiful
Love how everyone got so offended and said that it was cultural appropriation but the Japanese , the people who's historical culture was represented here found it to be in great taste and appreciated the representation
the most awesome stage ever

This performance is everything. The budget, the visual, the instruments. It's a masterpiece
This is one of my fave performances of all time. Literally put me in tears. Magical 😮
When I think back on live performances that I've seen, Katy Perry's are most frequently in mind. Not only is she an amazing singer, but she is a brilliant entertainer. If her voice isn't enough to influence some emotion out of you, then her theatrics are. She is uniquely herself in every way.
holy crap that was so awesome!!! This is a LIVE performance?? I've never seen any singer do something like that! oh my gosh the effects were just amazing..I wonder how much the whole thing costed...
This is one of the most iconic award show performances of all time! 🌸🎉👘💖
The set, the live performance and the story telling in this song. What a masterpiece Katy!
GOOSEBUMPS! She's stunning ❤️
I listen katy since I was 6 years and I think that she is one of the best singers of every time , her voice while she say the second “I love you” , when she touch a very high note , in that moment she gives me goosebumps, her voice is so cool
My favorite part is 2:43 when cherry blossoms fall down from above is soo beautiful, i love it😍🤩
That was entertaining as heck. one more, one more!
WE NEED A PERFORMANCE AS BEAUTIFUL AND AS SYNCHRONIZED AS THIS AGAIN KATY PLZZZ
How beautiful! I was moved to tears by this song.
Little M' Thank you! I agree!

i agree, you made your point really well, thank you :)
How can people complain about this? What an extravagant, elegant, wonderfully performed celebration and tribute to a beautiful culture. 🙏👏 I love it.

Gosh, I cried hard when all the lights started flashing. Beautiful!
This was such a beautiful performance. I loved this. ❤️
She might not be the best singer that ever lived, but to me she is the best performer that ever lived. What a spectacle! Always an incredible performer, you can always count on that. Plus her voice is a lot better when she isn't dancing and running around. She's a lot better then a lot of other pop singers.
Agree. She is madonna this era.

+alexander wei Of course there's a reason: Boobs. xD
The girl's gotta move. But I love how her team incorporated some traditional instruments and dance moves. They did their homework!
Nicole B All the details were her idea, more than her team. Katy Perry always has had full creative control in her craft.
one of the most stunning performance i ever seen
This is the most beautiful scenography I’ve seen for a performance like that....WOW just amazing 🎉🎉
This is beautiful...the elegance of the kimono and the background clashed with the song so perfectly...by far the best katy perry preformance ever...so glamorous...she even reflected the beauty of japanese culture perfectly
