  • A very bizarre book for a very bizarre time. I honestly don't even feel like I covered half of the strangeness in here.
I post a new video once a week about the books I'm reading, so subscribe if you're interested!

Great video! I must be a sick puppy because I loved M. Paul 🙈 Not at the beginning, of course, but when he starts to show himself more compassive (when Lucy starts to describe him so, I should say)... I felt in love with him. I mean, he's generous and he loves Lucy for what she is and he helps her get started as a teacher and he brings her books! I was heartbroken by the ending but I fully understand Lucy would not have the same independence as a wife. He will always be the man that loved her and gave her her independence this way 🥺

I found Monsieur Paul kinda funny, I did like him, also I couldn't help myself from relating to Lucy in a lot of things, so even though that he is not mr right, (Monsieur Paul) he was also not that bad, I see why she fell for him.

Good review, maybe a word or two on the style - which I thought was most excellent - would have been a good addition. There's so many awesome passages.
"Religious reader, you will preach to me a long sermon about
what I have just written, and so will you, moralist; and you, stern
sage: you, stoic, will frown; you, cynic, sneer; you, epicure, laugh.
Well, each and all, take it your own way. I accept the sermon,
frown, sneer and laugh; perhaps you are all right: and perhaps,
circumstanced like me, you would have been, like me, wrong. The
first month was, indeed, a long, black, heavy month to me."

Great description of the contents and contexts connected to this book! Your discussion was very detailed and knowledgeable - you've done the book justice and convinced me why I should put this title on my list of books to read.

Not bizarre----but rather essentially an autobiographical story of Charlotte Bronte's relationship or infatuation with M. Heger.

Of course, but can it not be both autobiographical and delightfully bizarre? The plot has basis in real life, but that is complicated and made more strange/intriguing by a withholding narrator, supernatural elements, and a host of side characters not based in any reality. Though, you're right, the autobiographical piece offers an interesting perspective on the story and the passion that was probably controversial at the time.
