Miss the 90s. What a great time for just having fun with car audio
It’s was super expensive. Now is the time to have fun with car audio. Cheap clean watts and the materials are so much better. I’d love to be 16 again and be able to afford a 3000watt system.
@HappyHarryHardon When I discovered car audio in 99 through a job experience class for school all I could ever do was drool over it. Everything was awesome to look at and listen to. But I was lucky to even have a Walkman and portable cd player at the time. :)
@ It was awesome but it’s was still incredibly expensive and out of the reach of way too many young folks. Now I can buy a nice Korean amp that cranks out clean 4ohm 1500 watts for under 200$.
Me too! Loved the 90s. And our music was superior to modern music.
@ Agreed. I didn't even have a vehicle at the time let alone the money to put any audio equipment in one. Now it's become more of a mainstream hobby open to everyone with unlimited choices. Rather than a niche only for those with deep pockets to enjoy. Because of Big-D's reviews I'll probably give Down-4-Sound a try in the future. I like their style and color choices. Plus they seem to have good build quality.
The golden era. I got my license in 96. Car audio was my entire life
Those were definitely the good ol days. I remember buying 2 50x2's and was crazy excited to bring them home to get hooked up!
Love old school Rockford amps
Loved those amps. Those amps made Rockford fosgate the king of bass back in the mid to late 90s here in phoenix Arizona.
Just for reference…In the early 90’s I worked at one of the top five car audio install shops in the nation and only made $9/hr, so amps like these, Orion, Hifonics, US amps, Linear Power, Autotek, Phoenix Gold and more that I can’t remember at 53 years old 😂 where totally out of reach for most people under 25 years old but those of us that busted our asses working two jobs and doin side jobs we gladly shelled out the money so our friends could hear us coming from a 1/4 mile away. 😜
The shop I worked at was Orion and I put in several hundred and met some very famous people doing it but I was a Hifonics guy but they all were great amps (I’ve owned just about every brand I mentioned) and truly believe if you take away cell phones and internet way more kids would be into it like we were. Btw I’m still bumping a Hifonics. 😉
These bring back great memories
90's car audio was straight up EPIC! I'm very fortunate to have experienced such a very special time! I wasn't a Fosgate fan for some reason back then but I wish I had tried one. A few years back I purchased a 40x2 and a 60x2 from eBay and I was blown away by their performance! I still have them in my truck right now. Thanks for another great video!
Hey good shit is good shit 👍 the technology hasn't changed that significantly since so rock the hell outta that old shit man 😊
Thanks for another cool oldschool Rockford Fosgate video 😊👍 Also a very big thanks for linking to my channel 🙏👍😊
These are the videos I love to see
I love these RF amp series😬😬... and yeah...Audiokeller is a cool guy too....😉😉😉😉
Back in 96 I Had two of these exact amps on highs and two of the same design 250m’s on subs. Holy crap these things were strong and super clean.
Great video thank you. I ran one of these in a small spl hotrod I built and had 4 x 12” Cerwin Vega V Flex subs getting 145db in 1998 claiming the national title (New Zealand) in the 0-150w class. Wired series parallel from memory
That’s insane
Oh the 90's bring that decade back around. A young teen I was..
The golden age of mobile audio
a classic💪🏼
I have one of these with the metal caps. Still works great.
Got to see a Rockford Fosgate Demo vehicle at a RF dealer at the time, back in 1998.
Probably good for quick burps in the contests @2ohm mono, love your stuff BigD been with you from the beginning!
Rockford- Fosgate punch amps always been consident. They were expensive even in the 90ts wanted one was too much money for my budget back then. Great vid 👍
Man I ran 2 punch power 12’s with the large brushed metal magnets. On a punch 500 bridged out. Using the fosgate symmetry as my preamp and eq. Life was good.
I didn't discover car audio until 99/2000 when I took a job experience class in school. One of the jobs I got to go to was a local car & home audio dealer. Through him is where I discovered Rockford Fosgate, JL, Clarion, Zapco, Alpine, Phoenix Gold, Orion and Crossfire. Doesn't mean I was able to afford any of it, but at least I found out it existed. 😆
This takes me straight back to high school
i love rockford! make under rated power a thing again!
Seems like most the decent amps out there these days are underrated
Gotta love those punch links.
Had my punch amp pushing two earthquake of san Francisco subwoofers. 90s bass was built different ❤❤
👍 100 seconds... good to be able to rate them in the future. 💯 for big Pun. 🎉
Wow video quality is awesome
Hands down the best amps made god i miss the 90 car audio was more fun back in the day.
Fosgate for the win. Still got my punch 400.4 and t1500 bdcp in the garage collection. Wish they catch up with the technology now. Their biggest amps are the 2500bdcp. That just isn't enough power for people who want bigger builds. Hopefully a 3500.1 can come out one day
These amps had a quasi-output stage of N channel mosfets in its power output that needed a separate driver and higher B+ which is on a separate vertical PCB. In that era there was a shortage of power mosfets for unknown reasons and the engineers came up with that solution. It happened earlier with BJTs in the early seventies because high power PNP BJTs were available at that time. So only NPN BJTs were used in the power output stages with higher distortion and output coupling capacitors with 20 to 30 watts of output power to mimic the tube amplifiers..
This stuff is so much more fun than it has any right to be. TY BIG D!
I knew a few guys with these amps like, Wow! 600 to 1000 watts on stock electrical was pretty impressive for the mid 90s!
In typical 90s early 2000's fashion if you bridged a class AB amp on a sub and it outputed anything 300 watts or upward, you very well had yourself a vehicle that properly produced strobe light effects to go along with the club/dance music coming out of your car from the voltage drop and dimming head lights.
That’s crazy power for 90s!!
I've sold and installed many of these. Power series over just the BB punch all day long.
This was unobtainium for me back in the day. I had the three way party box with the dual twelves ported. This would have been banging.
I had this amp powering (2) 8 ohm RF18’s in my Honda hatchback! Never any problems
Balanced connectors use common mode rejection. It has 2 wires for the signal per channel one is 180 degrees out of phase, in the amp it flips the one out of phase back to normal. The idea is any noise picked up will also get flipped 180 out, and when the 2 signals are recombined it cancels out the noise. A nice SQ design touch.
I remember using an audio isolation transformer to deal with the noise in my 71 Duster. Balanced was just out of my price range.
I love it when you push the amps to their limits
My first real system was with a 40ix on a couple audiophile series 8s. Super cool stuff.
Awesome 👏
Hello! Love the series. I have been watching for awhile and have a serious question I notice your ch 2 on the dyno is always less than ch 1. Is there a reason for this? I am asking because i like learning about this stuff. Thank you
I could only dream of having this kind of power back in 1996. I think the next year I bought a budget series from RF. They didn't look very good. They need to bring back this look. Have all new internals with this external design.
It's the (newer) grill amp! Now if you had Vega 15s bumping on that amp, pretty much as iconic!
Started with the 360a2 and then added another 360a2. Then to a bd1000. Then to a bd1500. Just hit different for sure.
Ohhh yeah the golden era of Fosgate...I couldn't afford a large 4 chanel amp coz I was in college so I cheaped out and grabbed a Punch 40 and drove my Boston Pro separates front and rear with that little dude 😂 sounded ok 👍
I had a punch 150 pushing 4-12s if you had a 250 you were considered a big dog my boy had a suburban with 8-15s it was crazy won the state bass record in 97!
Thank you.
I loved my 2 - 50.1's on 8 - 12's
And my 50.2 on my MB Quart 6,4, tweet
So miss real audio
In 1997,I had the choice to upgrade to this amp or Heidts upper and lower tubular control arms for my 57 Chevy. I bought the suspension.
sickkk I have a few of these bad boys.
Hey bigdwiz I would love to see a dyno of the silver mtx amps made after the mta225&250 but before the black thunder series like the rt-a2110,rt-a250 & rt-a450 never see much about these even mtx couldn't find much in their records about them
Are the new Rockfords just as pleasing? Or have they went cheap? Been out of car audio since the 90's but getting ready to load up the wife 57 Chev.....
Nice
Do it bump doe? Time for a quadbox demo and see the spl in the kick panel.
Hey D! Why don’t you run these tests in Audiophile mode with no cards? It’s in the manual, completely bypasses the x-card circuitry?
I asked the same! I always run these without the cards and use my deck to set crossover. These amps sound so so clean bright and sweet 👌
that was after the dsm that john pleitz designed for rf.
Oh absolutely NOTHING means a more powerful amplifier is tough than a big wolf! Yes!
How do you compare the sound quality between older amps (90's) and todays top brands?
I noticed the NICHICON CAPS 👍....has a lot to do with its dynamic power, wish today's amps had the same quality components 😮
They were unregulated too right??? I think that has a lot to do with the exceptional headroom 👍
Had this same exact amp
thats a bad mamjama! I had this one powering a pair of JL W0 12s and hit 142db
Hmmm... I have the Punch 40 version of this amp, and I used to bridge it to 2ohms without any trouble. Takes a lot less current to do the 200-300 it was probably putting out, though.
Yeah, those old Punch amps from the 90's ran 2-ohm bridged. The old ppi art series would go into protect right away if bridged 2-ohms.
I'm curious, if you are doing a certified test with that dyno, what percentage of inaccuracy is allowed because channel 2 is consistently lower than channel 1 in the videos I have seen, 5% difference for this amp. Surely, it's not the amps causing this discrepancy, I can't see where the law of averages would favor channel 2 being lower across all the brands.
Only bad thing about 90s car audio was the $$$. It did not favor me in high school LOL
My dad gave my a old punch 200S amp punch Z sub
I wish I was able to afford RF back in the day
Could you ever possibly do a comparison of a current Class D amp that does 600 watts at 4 ohms against this particular amp. Perhaps and in car comparison with a DB meter, etc. Also, someone else in the vehicle with you to compare notes about the perceived difference between 600 A/B watts and 600 Class D watts.
I had the 125x2 punch version 1998
man this amp was not messing around with quality components this amp has nichicon and Mallory capacitors in it i wish some brands would use those brand of caps these days i had a new TV go out cause of bad caps in the power supply section i just bought a new one
Did you run the amp dyno with the amp in "Audiophile bypass" without the xover card installed?
I still have a Punch 160
I’m curious there’s always the debate that class A/B sounds better than class D especially on the highs, what’s your thoughts Big D
Comes down to a lot more than the amp, but A/B do rectify more of the signal so in theory if you limited all other items and performance metrics there is a possibility.
In my opinion class d can be very powerful and clean but lacks the warmth and sweetness of class ab. 👍
It's rather sad that audio systems seemed to be more popular when the prices were so significantly higher than modern parts. A system sounding just as good as a 4 thousand dollar system back from the early 90s would run less than half that today - even if you include DSP or a head unit for an older car - yet almost no one seems to have any bump now-a-days.
Unfortunately, that's exactly how supply and demand works. Back then, there were few makers of quality car audio and the demand was high. It's now the other way around. We live in a world where Korean amps are considered premium.
George Foreman version! ;-)
Test the darn amp at the voltage the manufacture does please!!!! more real world for most people. I had 4 of these back in 94 running some 15" kicker comps and 12" comps, kenwood 700watt, boston acoustics 1" x6, 6.5 x6. It was a ripper!!
NO Sir im good. I like the car audio of Now where mosfets are way way more efficient and car audio is way way cheaper for the wattage.
Please always hook up the amp to the quadbox
Bought a punch 100ix in 94 $340
Had the hole set 2 years ago played punch 200 next to the 100 the 100 basically put out 85 percent of the 200. Want another pint 100 ix
I have no idea why people lose those end caps.
Should have kept my Soundstream class A .
I had one I had one
There is no cooler looking amp than Punch, specially with two or three installed together!
I wish I didn't sale all my old Rockford amps
Ah yes...Rockford Fostgate amps. Put it with a pair of Cerwin Vegas and watch it go to work!
Do it bump doe
ah yes, the 90's, where every qualtiy manufacturer underrated everything. Take cars for example.....
Meh is only nostalgia for most 50 yr olds Todays amps are much more efficient and powerful especially current rockford stuff
@@allmotorhash for the same money though?
It really isn't the gear as much as the culture and the vehicles themselves .
I don't care how good the party favors are , a rave on a Zoom call isn't much of a party .
Way different vibe these days .
its not cause of the shielding of that cable its cause that box increases the input signal voltage up to 8 volts by that point the shielding is useless cause the signal is now way higher than the noise floor so it just drowns it out thats has to be the most gimmicky thing ive ever seen think of it like a radio the stronger the signal the less fuzzier it sounds
$769
We had better speakers back then
Yes and no
Bro wasting time with this ruffers, try the MTX 81000D you'll know what's good .
Banda BD800.4 2025 ~$100
Backwards Inflation 1995 ~$0.13
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
These amps were bullet proof 👍
