    Thank you so much for this video. I'm a new grad PA working in urgent care as a first job. I am absolutely miserable, depressed, I'm amazed at how fast it came on honestly. I've decided when I go in tomorrow I will no longer aim for there metrics of 36 patients a day. I will see one at a time and at my pace. Chances are I will be demoted or fired but I'm already in the process of looking elsewhere for a career. If your a new PA please stay away from urgent care. It is awful, just no other words for it.

      I’m so sorry your PA journey started so rocky. But it sounds like you understand what matters most in life and you are prioritizing your needs and mental health above all else. I applaud you for your self awareness. ❤️ And agreed, urgent care may not be the best place for new grads without the right support and mentorship.

    Corporations all operate the same way. Many times they make you do dumb tasks just to legitimize their own jobs while not giving any incentive other than keeping your job. This is why everyone needs an FU fund. I saved enough to be able to retire without saving another penny. Now when I am asked to work harder, I just take my time. The job market is good enough for me where I moved to in Europe, so much so that I could easily find another job as my skills are in demand.

      So how do we get you to love healthcare again? What can YOU do to change our current healthcare situation? For starters, I think building a world of financially independent providers who aren’t afraid to speak out against Corporate Medicine is the first step to change. That’s why I’m obsessed with creating millionaires. Bring back the power to the healthcare providers

  • @MNP208

    You explain the realities of health care so well. You are young. It was so disheartening to see our older providers red-faced and sweating, running from room to room. I believe this expectation caused some provider mental health issues. Primary care isn't any better though. Many primary care providers moved to the urgent care arena because of the unrealistic metrics. You can't go to your patients' homes and clean out their refrigerators.

    I contemplate week in and week out if I even want to go to PA school. Been doing CT for the past 7 seven years so I’ve seen how messed up the health care system is. Patients getting numerous imaging exams order when the majority of them don’t even really need it. A radiologist told me less than 1% of all the exams they read in a day come back negative. Clearly a means just to make the company money and increase their bonus. I already feel the health care burnout being in this field for so long. Now I’m unsure if I could go back to school for another two years when I’m already feeling this way. Especially since it’s not about the money because I’m making more than a new grad PA as a travel CT tech with way less stress and responsibilities. Always wanted to be a PA but really unsure at this point. Don’t want to commit take out loans and then have regret later on about it. Ughhh. Everything in this video is true.

    So, how do we fix the problem.. I am an inspiring PA current an occupational therapy assistant. I personally feel this way about my current profession. Making the decision to make the move to PA was based off me pursuing more freedom in my ability to treat my patients based off my clinical judgement and not accomplish this in this amount of time and disregard patient outcome. I desire to be and become an excellent provider. But I do not want to be a medical slave.

      If you need a degree to do it, it won’t make you wealthy. You won’t find financial freedom in a career path. Financial independence is about saving and investing the money you earn. Choosing a PA career will not make you rich or wealthy. In order to truly be wealthy, you have to be some sort of investor and entrepreneur. Don’t go into medicine for the money.

      @@samingoshow I am not choosing the PA field as a avenue for wealth. I mean making six figures is very comfortable. However, it's not wealth. I am choosing to pursue PA because I want to be more hands on in the overall health for people of color. I see a deficit in the amount of people of color in medicine. And often people of color(especially geriatrics) will not follow through with a tx plan because the person giving the dx and tx does not look like them.(can't relate to them) and I want to increase my people awareness of diseases and decrease my people negative outcomes of disease. I just want to be treat fairly and compensated fairly for my education, knowledge and worth. And most importantly not be a slave to medicine

      @@daniellem1008 if you plan to become a PA you will be a slave to this broken healthcare system...as a PA you will work long, hard, highly stressful hours doing what nurses cannot and what doctors don't want to...you will come early and stay late...you will spend massive amount of time in battle with insurance companies over your patients care only to have your patients not appreciate your efforts and even curse you out over the lack of coverage that you have nothing to do with...you will have zero control over your schedule which is controlled by your employer especially if you work in a hospital setting...you will perform the same job as a nurse practitioner yet have less autonomy, less flexibility and maybe even less pay...your goals of why you want to be a PA are admirable but naive...if you have an absolute passion to be a PA then by all means go for it...but if your specific goal is to bring healthcare awareness to our community then consider healthcare education instead

    Would this apply to all specialties? For instance, wouldn't surgical PAs feel slightly less pressure (or burnout) since I would assume they don't need to see as many patients (cause surgeries take a lot of time?) or keep track of as many things as an internal or family medicine PA would need to?

    • @samingoshow
      @samingoshow  2 года назад +1

      This is pretty much in any speciality. Surgery has one of the highest burnout rate, after ER. Long hours, high acuity patients, and outrageous work hours- not ideal for most people with families or anyone who wants a social life.

      @@samingoshow I’m a PTA and this same concept applies in the physical therapy world. It’s designed to show a sprinkle of care and compassion on as many patients as you can in the shortest amount of time, especially for us because we are paid hourly. The most work we can push ourselves to do in the shortest time on the clock the better for the company. They rake in the reimbursement while we get paid less due to being on the clock for the shortest time possible. So that brings me to this question then how is PA ranked as #2 best career in America when it is so stressful and has a really bad work-life balance?

      Believe it or not, the opposite is the case. Surgeons (save for neurosurgeons and trauma surgeons) have lower rates of burnout than medical attending, much of which can be attributed to having less charting and paper work to do, as well as the instant gratification of giving a patient the proverbial quick fix, in spite of the ridiculous hours they work.
