  • I've listened to a lot of Metallica on this channel, and know that I've only heard a small section of their total discography (Unforgiven 2 and 3 are coming, I promise). And the covers I've heard Chris Stapleton sing have been absolutely mind blowing for me. So what happens when he covers "Nothing Else Matters"? I didn't know, so I had to check it out!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Chris Stapleton performing "Nothing Else Matters" by Metallica for the first time.

A song that James Hetfield was reluctant to bring to the rest of the band. Initially, the song was not meant to be released, as Hetfield had written it for himself, but after drummer Lars Ulrich heard it, it was considered for the album. Elton John called it one of the best songs ever written. Now the song has 138 artist covers. For me, I'll stick to the original by Metallica.

Firefly Lane? Or is there also a show called Firefly? I saw Firefly Lane starring Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke and besides being a nice story, since the girls grow up in the 70s, there's a lot of nice 70s imagery, including music from that time, as well as the 80s and onwards.

There's so many amazing songs you could analyze of his on here but it's impossible to put into words just how unfathomably talented he is. Sinead O'Connor's recording is the Prince's "Nothing Compares To You" is the definitive version of that song. Rare as it is for a cover version to eclipse the original artist it is even rare still for another cover to stand up with the artist who made the definitive cover. Chris Stapelton's cover of "Nothing Compare's To You" the night Prince died is one of those rarer covers.

As an old guy that went through the 80s as a teen, I notice 4 songs that really define that era that you have not reviewed. Might be for good reasons, but these are mandatory listens if you want to understand any Gen-Xer. In reverse order: Quiet Riot “Cum on feel the noise”, Billy Idol “Rebel Yell”, Frankie Goes to Hollywood “Relax”, and Twisted Sister “We’re not gunna take it”. Top three I strongly suggest the music videos which also helps explain Gen-X. You do a fantastic if job in a very entertaining manner. Thank you.

Two Firefly references in the first 3 comments has me super interested in the first 20 seconds.
But I'm here to say I am not a particular blues fan and really not a country fan, I grew up on 80s & 90s metal. But I now have a Chris Stapleton Spotify playlist, I'll be paying more attention to styles outside my comfort zone
This is so more emotional than the original.

I was extremely hesitant to listen to this cover. I usually avoid covers of songs that i love. But with it being Chris Stapleton i had to hear it. He is truly remarkable. The way he made it his was incredible. It felt like it was his song. I missed the guitar solo from the original but the solo at the end by Chris made up for it. So much soul. So much feel. Such a great cover.

So glad you checked this out. This was the first Stapleton song I heard, and the bluesiness is what convinced me to check out his other stuff.
By the way, Stapleton’s work with the Jompson Brothers is also wonderful. Before he did the solo “country” stuff with the Steeldrivers, it was the rock band he sang with.
Also, since you are digging both Stapleton and Metallica, I also recommend Metallica’s “Mama Said.” A delightful foray into country from the 1990s.

this could easily be a main backing track to either SOA (sons of anarchy) or The Punisher (netflix version w/ jon bernthal). that gritty dirty western blues with a kiss of anger that this song inhibits is masterful. there's so much power & pain in this version......absolutely incredible cover of an already timeless song that never failed to pull at the heartstrings.
