    Damn, this is some good info. I had no idea about the primary, secondary, and tertiary buds and which way(s) they would grow. Thanks for sharing!

    I have 2 very large pecan trees on my ranch in central texas. We are still cleaning up after the winter storm damage of broken limbs. Should I use pruning paint on the large cut limbs to protect from insects and growth from that area?

      I don’t see why it would hurt to use the paint but I never have tried it. Let us know how it goes!

    I have a pecan tree at least 10 years old, anything I can do to promote nut production? Nothing seen yet.

      It’s possible it is a variety that would not be producing nuts yet. The other thing that comes to mind is it may need another tree near by to pollinate it.

    First time I've seen bud pruning. That's brilliant! But I do want to point something out. You say to cut the limbs as close to the trunk as possible. That's not exactly right. Every limb has a collar right at the trunk. The limb should be cut as close to that collar as possible. You don't want to cut the collar at all. That's where the rapid healing growth comes from. Cut the collar off and it will take a long time to heal, if it ever does.

      Thanks for pointing that out! I appreciate your comment. I agree with you. I am cutting right against the tree but not into the thicker part right at the base of the trunk, which would leave a larger area to heal. So far we haven't had any issues with healing or disease with our trees. Thank you for adding some details here that our followers may find useful!

    Great video
    Question from a noob:
    -1'38 there is one central leader and 2 scaffold.Shouldn't we aim for 3-4 scaffold instead of just 2?
    Will new scaffold grow to obtain 3-4 scaffold?
    -At what age do you make this prune?Is it just a one time or will you have to do this every year?
    Thanks in advance

      Hey- thanks for your comment! I prune my young trees every winter and plan on doing so until I can’t comfortably reach them on a small step ladder. As far as the number of scaffold branches goes, I’m not worried about that as more will grow in above those in the video. My main focus in these young trees is to get the scaffold branches established above the height of a tractor now while they’re young so as to avoid taking off a huge limb in the future.

    Do pecan bleed sap like a maple does?

    • @BagANut
      @BagANut  3 года назад

      Great question and I was not really sure! Have not seen one dripping sap. My quick google search says that your tree should not be dripping anything, if it is it is likely an aphid affliction… and the liquid dripping is actually aphid poop 😆

      No they don't, Mesquite trees do but not Pecans ..

    Can you top a pecan tree so it doesn’t grow too tall?

    • @BagANut
      @BagANut  2 года назад

      I have never done this personally but over the years I have seen trees kept trimmed pretty low to keep them out of the power lines. They do look to still be healthy trees.
