We have never grown our own root stock. If I was going to grow my own, for my own orchard, I think I would use the soil from the area the tree would be planted in. My thinking is that if the seeds grew well in that soil, that would make them good root stock. If I was going to grow trees to sell to the public, I would check with local growers or my extension office.
i enjoy watching these films about planting pecan trees a lot of good info now years ago pre computer days i planed 3 pecan trees at my new house i lived there 25 yrs never got 1 pecan the tree grew i didnot know about polinating so i bought wrong trees now there is a world of info avail. i have been planting paper shell pecans with about 50% sucess dont care about the fact it mat be exact as the nut the wood of any pecan 25 yrs average very valueable $$$$$$$ any kind of pecan is ok
That is a great point. Pecan wood is hard to beat. It is just beautiful. If you can get some nuts while they grow, and then the wood when it is mature it is double great! Sounds like you are doing all your work now, and will get some nut-producing trees in the near future and some great wood in the long run.
@@TheFarmerMC7989 You can plant non-grafted. The reason trees are often grafted is due to there are pest that specifically attack roots. Some root stocks are more disease/pest resistant than others. A grafted tree will help the yield in the long run.
Irrigation can be tricky. 1" pipe should be sufficient with open or drip irrigation. If you are wanting to do a hard set sprinkler system with zones, that may not work and you would need to ask a professional. Check out our 2 irrigation videos. The second one goes into more detail as to what we did specifically. 1. ruclips.net/video/UG8rgJVGzRw/видео.html 2. ruclips.net/video/gYB95-Q9W4I/видео.html
Hi! I just identified some leaves from plants that appeared out of nowhere in my front yard - four of them and they are growing very quickly - identified on a plant identifier app as pecan trees. Is this possible? I am in Northern California. The leaf, with its pointed tip and serrated edges, looks exactly like the leaf of the pecan tree in photos. I have no idea why these trees would be going growing here except that I did feed pecans to wild turkeys for a while a few years back. Any ideas? Thanks
Yes, it's possible it is pecan trees. I have had little ones grow up next to my barn where we sort and process our harvested nuts. I am not sure they will thrive in Northern California's climate, but give them time and see! Good luck!
do u plant grafted on from a nut??? i know they are bare root but that is the way its shiped i had some problems with grafted pecans buy planting too deep never let graft be in the ground trees settle some what after they are planted i fell to allow for that end up with water sprouts and main tree died
That is a great tip, Frank! A great reminder to not plant them too deep. My grafted trees have been in bare-root form and in potted form. I have never planted a nut on my farm, just the grafted trees to assure me with the right outcome. Check out this video on bare root vs potted. Maybe try potted next time. ruclips.net/video/ejhL076uVmY/видео.html
Great video. Awesome advice.
What soil mixture do you recommend for potting bare root pecans? We have seven-gallon pecan buckets to work with.

Great smile
Thank you for watching! :)
does it have to be grafted
No, the trees I planted were already grafted at nursery before I bought them.
@@BagANut Can we plant pican nut without grafting?
