  • My daily driver broke down 50 miles from home! Cranked but no start! What could the issue be? I replaced the fuel pump in January... has it gone bad already?? I take you through my method of troubleshooting, disassembly, reassembly, and more troubleshooting in order to get my car back on the road!

    That whole module/assembly works by the magic of the CAN network.
    When you unplug everything and plug it back in. The system has to go through a “discovery” sequence and the float setup is low priority.
    So plug it all back together, turn it on and be patient.

    So today my 2006 Scion Xb would not start and my father in law was thinking it was mostlikely the fuel pump. After doing your test @7:44 my high pressure fuel line shot fuel out which leads me to believe it is good! Thank you for your video and this test method, it saved me a lot of time. I was going to squirt starter fluid in the manifold which also would indicate if the pump was going bad but I didn't have any lol.

      I hear that the cam and/or crank position sensors are known to cause no start issues on these cars. Test for ignition fire with a spark plug tester next. If you don't have spark I'd check the cam/crank sensors

    • @jeffslegacy
      @jeffslegacy 2 года назад

      @@JestersGarage Actually I was thinking about stopping at the auto parts store tomorrow and picking up the camshaft position sensor. Also we did pull the spark plug and my brother in law hooked up the spark plug to a ground and I turned the car over and there was spark. So if I had spark when doing that spark test would that mean it's not the Camshaft position sensor?? Man I am just lost for what it is. I keep hoping it's this or that lol.

    • @JestersGarage
      @JestersGarage  2 года назад

      I can't say for certain, I'm not an expert on these cars, but I would assume if one of those sensors were bad it would have a no spark condition because it would tell the pcm to not allow spark. Dumb question but do you have unrestricted air flow to the engine? No clogged filter or mouse nest or something silly? Any check engine codes before it quit running?

    • @jeffslegacy
      @jeffslegacy 2 года назад

      @@JestersGarage Thanks for your input as your understanding seems to be more than mine lol! As far as air flow, I opened up the air filter and it was super clean, almost looking brand new. My father in law is going to come over in about an hour and he wants to spray started fluid in the manifold. Aparently if you do this and it starts then it is your fuel system. So we will see, I will keep you posted!

    That last fuel line you took off of the pump, push toward the pump and squeeze the clip. Then slide off. Clip will stay in hose connector. takes 2 hands.

    Your video is a great help Jester's Garage-thanks for taking your time to help all of us out here. I especially needed help with the rear bench seat removal step and you showed the basics of how to get that done. I used a pair of long needle nose pliers to gain a bit more 'push' to get the hoop of the seat over the clip of the bracket. But I was clueless without you leading me how to get it done.
    Your video in conjunction with : ruclips.net/video/PJnqkDSZpz8/видео.html (2006 Scion Xb fuel pump by Deville429) really helps us first gen Scion owners perform these kinds of fuel related repairs/maintenance. Thank you again!

    I am curious- since I had to splice a wiring plug in for the new fuel pump- if I do not get my solder and heat shrink seals water tight- or gas tight- Will that make the fuel pump not work?

    • @JestersGarage
      @JestersGarage  2 года назад

      Water-tight, no, won't matter. I have literally used butt-connectors before, with no heat shrink. But, I would highly recommend heat shrink. I noticed that the new plug's wires don't like solder. That's what failed on my original fix.

    • @GothConservative
      @GothConservative 2 года назад

      @@JestersGarage Yes, i noticed that as well. The new wires are thicker too. Well, I still have no car. Before I snapped the fuel pump back together- I checked all my wires for continuity and they were good. Since It still wouldn't start- I checked the connection at the pump with the wiring harness and used a test light. I get no light when I turn the engine over. I checked to make sure there are no shorts in the system by using test light and touching to battery. The relay is fine. The 2 efi fuses are fine. What am I missing??

    • @JestersGarage
      @JestersGarage  2 года назад

      Can you run the pump off 12v outside of the car? Like, directly connected to the battery?

    • @GothConservative
      @GothConservative 2 года назад

      @@JestersGarage I was not sure how to do that. I have since re-connected and tried staring car. Still wont start, but turns over. I checked and fuel was in fuel line from pump going to front of car when I unplugged the line. So it is working. Could bad coils or spark plugs keep car from turning over?

    • @JestersGarage
      @JestersGarage  2 года назад

      At this point you need to check for spark. Either with one of those spark checkers, or have someone crank the car while a coil and plug are sitting next to something metal (preferably without fuel or flammable things around) and see if you can see spark in the plug gap. If you have no spark you have another issue afoot.

    How does the one way circular clip that holds the fuel strainer on go? Is it prongs down or up? I am re-assembling my fuel pump on my XA right now. I can't get the thing to go on. It almost seems like it doesnt need it because of how the strainer snaps on and is then held in place with the plastic cap and the rubber gasket.

    • @JestersGarage
      @JestersGarage  2 года назад +1

      It's been a while since I did mine, but if memory serves me, you want to put the clip on to where the "fingers" of the circular clip are pointing down/away from the strainer. Because the edges of the fingers will dig into the plastic ever so slightly and prevent it from coming off. Versus if the clip was reversed the fingers of the circular clip would slide off easily. Now, if you have the same assembly as me, once you pop the bottom on it should hold it's on I'd think. Hope that helps any.

    • @GothConservative
      @GothConservative 2 года назад

      @@JestersGarage I have tried to get the damn thing on twice now. It just doesn't want to go on. You made it look so simple when you did it. I noticed that the strainer is held on good without the clip and then held on more once the rubber gasket is in place and then the plastic case reassembled.
      This is my 2nd go around replacing the pump. Last week got it in and still won't engage. I figured maybe it was my wiring splice I had to do. I put another new pump in anyway to kill 2 birds.

    • @JestersGarage
      @JestersGarage  2 года назад

      @@GothConservative have you tried the original clip? Also, sometimes a small socket and a small hammer helps tap it on. And yeah, hey, as long as you don't have a crap solder joint like I did the first time you'll be ok haha
