I have two of those types of pennies (which I found inside a couple old pianos as the owners of the pianos didn't care if I took them), but I never tested them for magnetism. I always thought that the pennies were made of zinc in the first place. I am going to test them to see what I've got.
Philip Royd. They are a grey color. Would like to see another one

yo tengo un peny del 1943 y es magnetico kiero saber el balor
It is crazy theres not much value in a steel coin from 60 yrs ago. I would think alot of them would have rusted away when dropped and exposed to the elements.
How is the weight of Lincoln penny 1943 in steel? Please inform me, thank you, best regards
2.70 g
I saw one crushed on train tracks so it's not worth anything but it's pretty cool to see one
It was probably just a modern penny.
That's about all they're good for.
actually you are 42 cents richer. you forgot to minus the original 3 cents that you started with. just sayin.

Wouldn't the steel over copper be attracted to the magnet? Just thinking out loud.
There's no "copper" in a steel cent. They're zinc-coated steel.
I believe that the subject of this was the author was trying to differentiate a steel over copper as opposed to a steel over zinc.
Re-read the title. Here, I'll read it for you: "How Valuable Is Your Steel Penny?" I forgot to mention: "Not much". For one, 493,838,670 were minted. Two, citizens hoarded them as curiosities so there's still millions out here in perfect shape making them practically worthless and nothing more than [a] curiosity, like wooden nickels. Three, back then, a CENT (not "penny") had ONE CENT (not "penny") worth of copper in it. Due to wartime shortages, copper was replaced with steel and zinc. Still, the combination of steel and zinc didn't equal one CENT (not "penny") Four, today's book value puts them at 40 to 50 CENTS (not "pennies") in value. They're worth a bit more of copper CENTS (not "pennies") of the era but still, they're shitty coins as far as I'm concerned. Every one I've metal detected is nothing more than a rusty blob roughly in the shape of a CENT (not "penny") Hope I've covered all the bases for you, Mister Bressett. You should have known.
Oh, there WERE no "steel over copper" CENTS (not "pennies") ever minted so they're non-existent. Kind of defeats the purpose of saving copper for the war, doesn't it? You should have known.
If steel plated, probably not. Not enough steel to draw attraction to a magnet enough to pick it up.
aye I got one that is a 1983 d coat steel Pennie but I test to c if it stick to a magnet it don't does dis mean I have something.
Um 1938 shouldn't be steel coated it must have been done by someone for a scam maybe
It's not 1938. its a 1983 d
Yeah I 1909 steel penny and its definitely fake the letters are all like worn out and it's a pretty nice penny it's just a fake.

Dorsey Siders my new wheat penny giveaway video will be posted tomorrow morning. Check it out subscribe, and comment to be entered in drawing every Friday.
The only 1943 penny that is valuable would be the 1943 copper cent. They surmise that a small number of blank copper planchets were inadvertently left in a bin and then the steel planchets were dumped into that bin and minted. There would be no reason to take a six figure copper coin and plate it with zink. The fraud is when they plate a 1943 steel cent with copper then try to pass it off as one of those six figure gems. The only time the magnet test makes sense is when you are testing an apparent copper 43 cent for it's steel content. If the magnet picks it up someone is trying to cheat you.
How much
sorry, but you're wrong. the cents are zinc plated steel. the valuable cents are 1943 copper, no plating. but you keep on checking those!

I have a steel pennie with copper on it.
I have 1943 steel penny, 1943 s and 1943 D
My uncle had a 1955 double die.
Sold it for over a $1000 in the 70s. But I guess not worth so much anymore ?
It was a VF Grade.
About $1,650 today. If he got a grand in the 70's, he cleaned up! I "cleaned up" recently when I metal detected an 1870 CC quarter book valued at $17,000. Sold it for $13,500.

"Glass houses", Joey me boy!
I have a 1958d steel wheatie, what's it worth?
there are no 1958 steels. Only 1943's and rare 1944's
...about a cent. Seriously, if in perfect shape, maybe on a good day 0.30 cents. 800,953,300 were minted. Very common wheat cent. By the way, yours is .950 copper, .050 zinc. No steel cents were minted that year due to no world wars going on anywhere, at least none that I know of. If you were to be suckered in to these "Unsearched Wheat Penny" [sic] hoards shit on Ebay, you'd most likely end up with mostly 1958, 1956, 1945 & 1952 cents. They may toss in a zinc-coated steel cent for a joke making you think you "scored!".
Hmm, I will have to post a short vid of it then, because it is a shiny steel color, magnetic too.
That's weird. I have some gold-colored Eisenhower dollar coins. No explanation. They may have been gold-electroplated by casinos or somewhere as giveaway curiosities.
Look at the edge, I had a penny that looked like steel till I saw that the edge was the copper color. Some people color coins, and others also coat coins themselves.
Novelty?

I have an uncirculated steel penny!
Hundreds of thousands of people do. They were hoarded after initially put into circulation. value? Maybe a buck. You'll never sell it for that unless you put it on Ebay and claim: "Extremely rare" and some dupe gets suckered in.

There are a lot of counterfeits out there.
My father told me there were pennies made of lead. Was he wrong and he was actually looking at steel pennies?
I have one 1974D steel penny
Marco Rodríguez Nope, not steel, but aluminum.
However only one was struck as a showpiece by the mint, to see if it would be approved for production, it was not.
Look up "1974 aluminum cent" on RUclips to get a better answer.
Hey Marco I saw ur Video.Id like to have that U send in for price yet? Let me know
@@simplysteve68 aluminum isnt magnetic .His coin stuck to magnet rite Marco?
Steel pennies are still worth around $2-$5 bucks, and while they aren't that rare, they are still more rarer than a regular penny of the years prior and afterwards, of course, excluding the rare copper pennies accidentally minted and the double-struck '55 Philadelphia pennies all struck in one night shift-gone-wrong.
Luigi2600 depends on their condition. Money of all kinds begins to earn additional value after so many years in circulation. Money from 2001 will probably be in the rise soon.
I got a 1943S steel penny in MS62 for 15 cents...
So how much is a steel penny worth
He said in the video about 15 cents

david mazzetti it's a 1943? your holding a million dollars in your hand... call the local museum... they can help... but don't show them the penny until the legal terms have been discussed... and don't forget about me when your Ritch... I'm a kind man... I'll be ok with 49,000 off your million.. thanks.. this is for reel too... I once held a penny like yours and I lost it I was like 10 so I didn't take it seriously... until I was older and it was late... True Story...
Where ARE all of these steel pennies? I've only seen one in my whole life. I got a steel penny with my change when I was 12 in the early 70s.. .I said "Hey look! Somebody at the mint is playing a prank He used silver instead of copper to make penniesr!" One of my teachers explained the whole steel penny thing to me a couple of days later at school. .
" I always look though my change. You never know. About a year ago I got a 1919 Mercury dime with my change from Walgreen's. The Mercury dime has to be the most elegant coin ever minted by the U.S. mint.
I love mercury dimes, I found a 1923 merc on the floor of my bank.
YoloBagels That was lucky. I haven't found any rare coins but I've been lucky about finding money. I found a small paper bag on a city bus in the 90s that had over $800 in it. I found a canvas bag filled with quarters in as field next to a construction site.
I've also been lucky about finding money that I lost. I once withdrew $2,400 from my bank account in hundred dollar bills to rent an apartment and dropped the envelope on Market Street in San Francisco. I got in my car and drove 80 miles to the apartment complex. I didn't realize the money was gone until I got there. I thought I was going to have a heart attack. I drove back to the city and retraced my steps. I couldn't believe it. There, sitting on the sidewalk about 30 feet from the front entrance of the bank was the envelope with footprints all over it. I never told my wife about it. LOL
ldchappell1 That was close... can't believe your luck. The most money I've ever found was $5 on a bench at a summer camp that I went to :P
Or it is zink with copper
exqme, you sell it?Im buy it
Rafael Martinez
Rafael Martinez I'll sale you one just give me a call at 614 517 2513 also have several other coins you might want
Um this is a little weird.. I have a 1943 Pennie and its grey but u can see a little bit of orange.. So it might be copper. But it sticks to a magnet???!?!?
Nvm.. It's rust DX
That "orange" is oxidation (rust). Oh, by the way, they're not "pennies", "pennys" or "pennie" [sic]. They're "cents".
(this coming from a half-wit calling himself "Bilbo")
Well, well, well! Did I strike a nerve, little boy? Maybe that'll teach you to keep your grubby little fingers off the keyboard. That "bitch hp motorcycle" has been featured in 3 magazines since I bought it, non-running, in November of 2012. That "bitch...motorcycle" IS a "bitch" to start when cold but it keeps punk kids like you off of them due to the fact that it has no electric start. Fun Fact # 615: Yamaha's SR-line of motorcycle has been the biggest selling motorcycle in Japan since it's introduction in 1978. It's been in continual production in Japland since then and has recently been re-introduced to the US market but [only] as a 400. Mine? It's poked and stroked to 650 cc's (40 cubic inches) Nice chattin' with you, ya miserable, little PUKE! You should have known.
The funniest part? You keep responding! You should have known.

Got a miss struck older penny back not to much front half and half miss struck over date part of the front and back on front of the penny
Only "a few" were accidently minted. The chances of finding one is zip. Nil. Nix. There's no book value on them since they're not listed in The Official Red Book. However, one sole at auction for over $200,000. Since it's not a coin minted for circulation, it has no book value, thus, it's worthless. Why someone would pay almost 1/4 of a million dollars for a "non-coin", I don't know. More money than brains I guess.
I have about 100
I have a 1969s double die
could have 100k then
I don't know why people think that a 1943 copper penny is such a big deal I have 2 copper ones that my grand dad gave me before he past this week I'm only 9 years old and theses two penny's are going to buy me a piece of bubble gum tomorrow so save your cents while I spend mine what's all this sticking stuff people are talking mine don't stick all they'll do is buy me bubble gum so I can stick it up under a table .
Cookinitmax can you tell me how to clean a steel penny to tell the date on it can read 19_4 maybe
I got a steal penny
Couple days ago came across a 1991 silver penny/steel penny. Anyone else come across it? Someones science project or what?????
That is a possibility, Compare weight and diameter with a real cent. Sometimes the US mint will mint coins for other countries using other materials. Some of those blanks might have been left in a bin before they resumed minting pennies.
i got one to
I found a 1944 steel penny...

ChiliPlayz that’s worth about 100k sell that immediately
How sure are you that it's steel? Did you try to stick it to a magnet?
