Passage tombs in Ireland are being vandalized and even though it’s being reported and they’re trying to stop the vandalisms, they’re still ongoing and they’re ruining ancient heritage that we can never get back.
Carvings are being destroyed by graffiti, people are digging inside tombs in hopes to find treasures and the level of disrespect some people are showing for their ancestors oldest pieces of tangible history is just mind blowing.
The most extensive damage caused in 2020 was to the Neolithic tombs in County Sligo which is home to 75 Passage tombs, almost 1/3 of the estimated 240 passage tombs in Ireland.
On the Ballygawley mountains the Passage tomb known as The House of the Witch Cailleach a’ Bheara got vandalized by people in search for hidden chambers or treasures and so much material had been removed from the cairn that an adult can now lie in the hole that’s been created.
These people are looking for these things under the misguided notion that valuables can be found, meanwhile all there is to be found is ancient ash and maybe some pieces of bone.
Some people actually believe there are valuable gold or bronze objects hidden away in these ancient monuments, but what these people forget is that these ancient monuments predate the use of metals as they are more than 5000 years old.
The department of Heritage had the National Monuments Service inspect the passage tomb in Ballygawley after it had suffered damage in 2019, unfortunately these latest reports show that there has been further damage done to the site, which mind you is in a very remote location.
On top of the Knocknarea mountain sits Queen Maebh’s Cairn, which has been suffering ongoing damage, including the removal of stones from the base of the monument and what’s being called “Walking Scars” from people walking on top of the Cairn.
The Carrowkeel Cairns have suffered a lot of walking scars damage as well, these tombs are much smaller and a lot more fragile than Queen Maebdh’s Cairn.
A couple even chose to stay inside one of the tombs a few years ago, with straw bedding leaving tins of beans and their washing line on site.
Unfortunately the walking scars aren’t the only vandalism that Carrowkeel has to deal with, there has been a significant increase of people scratching their names onto the monuments.
This can potentially cause damage to the megalithic artworks that have been there for over 5000 years.
The complete lack of respect is just absolutely staggering to me, who on earth would do such things to these ancient monuments..
But even this is not the true scope of the damage being done at Carrowkeel, people are actually stealing quartz from the cairns to sell online. For a freaking quick buck!
During an inspection of the Carrownamaddoo and Castle Dargan passage tomb in Ballygawley they discovered that the cairn had been seriously damaged during an illegal excavation.
Neil Jackman an archaeologist said; “Whoever is carrying this out needs to stop, this is not an excavation, it is ransacking and desecration of a tomb and our shared heritage. All there could possibly be is small stone tools, broken fragments of pottery and human remains”.

What a sad state of affairs when people destroy their own heritage knowingly and with impunity! The fact that these amazing monuments could survive for over 10,000 years and only recently fall victim to MORONS speaks volumes about who and what we are in this generation. Thanks Kayleigh, for bringing this to our attention, I hope those responsible get what they deserve and that more people will be on the lookout for these idiots in the future….

Why leave them to rot in a field if they are so wonderful? put them everywhere, make subdivisions and towns and cities full of them. Reopen the ancient underground tunnel networks, why block them up and only let evil people use them as secret bases?

Having lived in Sligo for the last 51 years it is disheartening to see such blatant disregard for our national heritage. The irish people in general have had great respect for these monuments and apart from walking over them have for the most part left them alone. Twenty years ago you could visit these sites and 9 times out of 10 you'd spend hours there by yourself. Nowadays with the rise in peoples desire to explore and the influx of residents from other parts of the EU these sites are becoming 'the' place to visit, and with no real supervision and plenty of time alone and unseen certain people as you have shown are destroying them. Thank you for highlighting this issue, i can only hope that with enough pressure we can stop the heedless destruction of these treasures of culture. Regards P.

Thank you so much for making this video! It is sorely needed, and I applaud your courage in pointing out these travesties. It is truly sad to see this level of vandalism, yet it also points to a clear lack of the passing on of cultural heritage in Ireland in those places where it most counts. The fact that, at the very least, the offspring of these vandals will have been deprived of the opportunity to view these sites in as pristine a state as possible, should be enough to deter them from these acts-but clearly isn't-is a testament to some kind of breakdown of culture and education. I'm sure that the majority of Irish people would take a very dim view of such behaviour, but I do think it's the responsibility of any society to be able to install a sense of historic, generational continuity among its people. I deeply love Ireland and its history, and I deep hope they can sort this to everyone's benefit. At any rate, I (and I'm sure many others) share your disbelief and outrage. Wonderful video, as always. Cheers !

Depressing. People are idiots... :-( Still, thank you for pointing this out.
It got me thinking: People being idiots is neither a new phenomenon nor limited to the Island of Ireland. Are there interesting historic examples of sites being vandalised? Of course tomb robbing is very common. Off the top of my head, the viking graffiti in Maes Howe on Orkney are nothing more than vandalism, even if - from todays point of view - it is highly fascinating (and it's literary quality is about on par with "Kirstie was here"). Are there more cases of historic vandalism?

There is vandalism going on in many places, Spain is dealing with quite a bit.
But none of the places come close to what's happening in Ireland at the moment.
Littering is incredibly disrespectful but it doesn't do much besides leave a mess, in Ireland monuments are being purposefully defaced, vandalized, burned and more 😟

Unfortunately such problems are not limited to Ireland, but an affect any monument that is not guarded 24/7. Personally I have never understood the need to leave a mark to prove you have been somewhere, and the though of deliberately damaging a historic landmark is sickening.
They had a partial answer to this at one place that I went to in China a few years ago, close to the monument (a Buddhist temple) they had built a small brick shelter, and they actually asked people to write their names, date and where they came from on the interior white walls or ceiling of this building. From what we were told, once possible spaces have been written on, they are planning to build another such building and keep the first as a record of those that have been there. The though is that if people have an official place to leave their mark, they should not be tempted to deface the actual monument, and who knows in a thousand years these building might be a tourist attraction in their own right.

I lived in the north of Ireland for several years. There were no antique shops or even second hand goods for sale. I noticed that old cars aren't scrapped, but are left to rot behind the home & newly built houses more often than not are built beside the decaying old house being left to rot. I blame the residual affects of Calvinism for this.
We also used to cross a river on ancient boulders weighing approximately 10 to 15 tonnes which were placed in a row as stepping stones. I looked on google earth a few years ago for this crossing & found that the boulders had been uprooted & left in a heap on the rivers banks. I enquired & discovered that the farmer tired of trespassers taking the short cut across his pasture had done it. The belief in fairies had previously preserved Irelands ancient site's. History isn't even taught in many schools nowadays.
In North East Derbyshire where I live, ancient site's fare worse than in Ireland. We can tell by the name's in the graffiti whence the problem has emanated. But then an old elderly colleague of mine when he'd been in the army, had carved his name on top of the great pyramid. In this respect; Vandalism seems almost natural. Part of our M.O.

Charges only have an impact if there is a realistic risk of capture and detention. For that to happen there needs to be proper human observation of sites at risk, an appetite to arrest and a willingness to pursue for criminal activity.
We certainly don’t have that in the UK. Police numbers are cut beyond the bone, what police there are left don’t want to be saddled with the paperwork and we have a particular problem of faux-Traveller groups claiming racism if pursued for criminal activity.

I can't stand vandalism. Where I live in west Texas, it is a semi-arid environment on the edge between vast mostly treeless flat plains to the north and falling off into hill country that stretches south and east. There is a rare valley a few miles away with a small reservoir that is surrounded by a forest of thousands of ancient Live Oak trees. The lake front was never sold out to real estate investors due to it's being situated above a rich vein of crude oil. Oil companies leased the area from the county for drilling, and the county gets royalties. So no one lives around this beautiful lake, and most all of the forest is on public property and accessible by public roads. With so little restriction, the place has become a magnet for both vandals and litter. The Live Oaks, many of them over 200 years old and tall as an eight story building, are now covered in graffiti paints and nestled amid bags of garbage and large debris of every kind. There are dumped mattresses, refrigerators, tires, et cetera... and empty beer cans/bottles all over. It is sickening. It's the city kids and city folk who are responsible for these trespasses. Conservative minded people respect the land and our ancient heritage... and they bring up their children to do likewise. I don't know what the answer is to remedy these atrocious acts by liberal cretins, but we need to stop them. Google "Sonora Cavern's Butterfly".. was a cave formation near here.. took untold thousands of years to form.. absolutely breathtaking.. before some punk kid hopped the barrier fence and tried ripping it from the cave wall. They never caught the person responsible, but they managed to break off only a wing and leave this natural treasure forever ruined for all else. I can't believe we are made to share the world with these fools. What's most disheartening is that they are practically unreachable. Preaching to them, setting good examples, nothing seems to move them to try to do better.
Anyway, I understand your frustration :) ? Btw- you're even hotter when you get all fired up like that... ;) xoxo ♡

NO ONE wants to see graffiti on an ancient site, its 1000 worse feeling than seeing human garbage in nature. It's depressing. I can't get the image of the spray paint out of my mind. Not even to mention the senseless digging, vandalism, trampling on. And worse, idk what the Irish can do, not every site can be secured like Stonehenge, and you can't MAKE people respect their own history, or others heritage. The ancients had some suitable punishments for site desecration , I am sure...

The places you show of the British Isles will have to be taken care of by multiple people. I imagine the people will be military police, regular police, a whole lot of people I can't think of now. Like the travel logs to places I would like to see such as Egypt (the Pyramids); Peru, the remains of huge blocks of stone that are now form the side of a building or a fence. That were made by people that lived thousands of years ago or even hundreds of thousands of years ago. Their things survived a Cataclysmic event; the people didn't.
Those places have people that lead you and your visitors are very controlled by people that will arrest you if you are not following their "menu". I am very surprised that the "British Iles" are not following suit. It is a good thing Kayleigh started complaining about their "Heritage" that people are destroying them.

& my Irish Heritage is very important to me & my family i'm only a tiny bit Irish but is still very important
to me even if i wasn't part of The biological ancient family ....
i understand that younger people they do not care or they thought it will be amazing to write your name
on the stones of your ancestors for those could or do care but seriously do not know what their doing
is creating more harm or then good but no matter what is extremely important to a huge groups or just
overall greater sense of something else but not saying thus is okay far from it it's not okay at all i just
get the feel to possibly to a strong Punishment to a young person or groups of them or even younger that
could even go without effects on them simply meaning they didn't learn their lessons or didn't see point in it
or at least understand that did something that has a greater affect them in ways that not just young people
any age range really where i feel like their many things that make people do this kind of harm to ancient heritage
sites that is extremely dangerous! for one & well sigh some want to be Explores ancient monuments but
not realizing what they are doing is not helping finding more ancient history but creating more harm to them!
even if a good handful of people care about there heritage or don't want to hurt the ancient monuments but
some people in those situation don't understand the right steps to the exploring those sites or they think they
know better even or they simply do not care about it & want a fast Money Grab if they think theirs old ancient
Gold Objects or stuff like that to sale this is oddly one of the things that made me worry about went the world
situation with covid happened that people who are usually very busy extremely busy even with schooling
& there Long hours of there Jobs now having far more time on theirs hands or even really really needing extra
money because of those who are getting sick or not being able to get paying jobs & having extreme limits
has to finding ways get money is something i figured but this is sorta believable more hard to face cases
with at least reasons behind it but just marking name on tomb because your seriously Bored is not okay!
sigh i don't know i just feel like theirs got to be at least a possible ways to teach younger people or even the
older people that this is not okay but without going into one ear & out the other one like nothing happened or
worse it feeds the issues not help it? .... that putting some people jail for crimes for a few good months or less
may help in some big cases but it's not gonna fix all of this lack understanding or even just having the mind to
leave it alone if you don't care about those monuments & you don't care about history there are simply going
to be that way but i agree it's one thing to not be interested in any level it's go out of your way play around
with those sites! i feel like theirs a real need to teach a form of repast of the past that doesn't force it down
your throat & make a young person feel like why i should learn this who cares if a old people did something
    that happened 1000's years ago?
