That drum sound is perfect.
Thanks, man. They are beasts, and I love playing them.
You blew this one out of the water. The samba solo was remarkable by itself. Theres probably only one other guy that could play this song as good as you just did and he has passed, of course.
josh patton Man-oh-man, Josh, that's as nice as compliments come! Thank you so much, Josh :)
4:58 What a keen observation, outstanding performance 🎉
You're by far the best drummer when it comes to led zep covers on youtube. Props mate
Every cover is on point !!
Love the that shuffle beat with the slight samba breakdown.
+mmadadtx Soooooo much fun to play!
the boy played it straight down the line. certainly impressive.
I really appreciate it! Thank you so much! I'm hoping to do an updated version that's a bit more accurate, and with all the percussion elements during the samba section soon!
Great player, great drum set. I love the sound of it.
Amazing.....one of the best of Led Zeppelin. Halftime groove well executed by you.
Thanks so much, Abhishek! I really appreciate it!
Nice, man. So nice. This damn song NEVER gets old, not for drummers. Can't hear it without reaching for sticks. And you nailed it, brother, well done.
Greatest cover i've ever seen. So wonderful. Keep Killin it.
Best cover of this I've seen. Although its not exactly like the album, I could see Bonham doing this live. Especially the samba section. You play with groove unlike others I've seen on here, and groove is the key to this song.
I really appreciate the comment! I'd definitely like to take another stab at this one and get it a bit more dialed in, but I'll make sure to keep doing my best to emphasize the groove!
I just watched back to back your version of this track and Jason Bonham's version of this track, you smoked him.In all aspects timing, rhythm, the overall way you naturally sit in the pocket shows your dedication to your craft. This year will be 38 years I've been playing the skins. Unfortunately my muscular dystrophy is getting much worse. So don't EVER stop. You've got it son, very few ever do. Respectfully,
Buddy Rose
Now that’s a tight performance. Outstanding job bro.
That's the most awesome Led Zeppelin drum beat that Bonzo ever came up with -- and you did id fabulous. I wish that I was there to play the guitar with you.
I remember when I first heard this song was at a party. The only way I had recognized who the band was, was because of Plant singing. Some I knew never liked it because it was not a typical Zeppelin hard edge song but in my view they moved with the times and it is one of my all-time favourites..especially this groove that John laid down. Nice job by the way Man
That's awesome! I had a similar experience with All My Love! As I was cultivating my love for Zeppelin, the focus was on their earlier albums initially. However, I kept hearing All My Love on the radio, and while I couldn't immediately place who it was, there was a quirky familiarity to it. When I discovered it was Zeppelin, and then especially the meaning behind the song, my respect for their versatility went even more through the roof.
It's 10000% accurate!!!!!!!!!!!!! Fantastic, my jaw dropped.
That middle part around three minutes always kills.
Fantastic timing and feel. I close my eyes and I cannot tell you and JB apart. Great job!
Again, thanks so much for the kind words, Matthew! I really appreciate it.
Matthew is so right! This gives me great joy...
Gives me chills. Need more videos! And thanks.
That's awesome! Thanks so much for the kind words! I can promise that there will be plenty more coming up very soon!
I need a drummer like you... Awesome stuff dude!!!
Keith Brown Aye! I think your 'Rain Song' cover is great! You're always more than welcome to use the drums from any of my videos to make a cover of your own.
Thanks, I do use backing tracks it would be cool to try I could use video editing software and splice you in heheh, and give you credit of course. Awesome drumming!
That was just mind blowing job you did in nailing FITR wonderfully! It would be great if you also did drum tutorials on specific LZ tunes especially breaking them down into the significant parts.....you are actually a real inspiration in what you do here and my sincere thanks. Hopefully get to see you play in So. Cal. someday. Best wishes - Noel
Absolutely blown away. Perfect. Such great feel. You were right in there.
Amazing cover!
Thanks, Kevin! I'll keep working on more.
wow. I'm a guitarist and bassist but this makes me want to take up drums. awesome man!
+Jack son Ha, ha! Right on! Well, I'm happy you found your way here. I'd love to spend more time developing my ability on the bass, so I know what you mean...
MrMojoRisin1967 with your talents, you could do anything Bro. Lol
I really like your take on the middle section. I have messed around with different ideas to compensate for the timbale overdubs using high pitched cannon toms but I like what you do with the rack tom and floor tom better. Mind if I borrow it?
poekoelan75 Ha! Thank you. It's all yours, my friend!
I agree the, way you spiced it up on the middle section and the way you rode the ride and hats in the ride part really gives it the depth they gave it with studio tricks.
These are fantastic videos you do.
Do you ever break down specific fills or anything by request?
Nicely executed, with an eerily exact drum sound to boot.. congrats brutha !
Classic song played on Banham's signature Ludwig kit is what I meant. You were spot on regarding the arrangement. Loved it!
+mmadadtx Thanks, mmadadtx! I'm sorry it's taken me so long to reply. This song was a great time trying to figure out and memorize. My hope is to be revisiting this one soon and give it an update with multiple camera angels and a more accurate sound. I really appreciate your kind words, and promise I'll keep giving these efforts my best.
Excellent, adding your own samba stuff, too!
+fragilebeaster Aye! Until the day comes to where I overdub the percussion stuff, I figure that's the most effective way to spice up that section on a regular kit :)
I'm sorry I just now found your videos. Love it man. Good work!
Well, you're here now, and it's a pleasure to have you! I'm glad you dig it! I promise there's plenty more to come...
Bro! I was thinking, "Alright. He's got the groove down pretty good. BUT..can he pull off the snare roll coming out of the latin groove thing?" Well..BAM! You nailed it in FINE fashion! (minus the accents. HAD to bust your chops cuz I'm envious!)
thewiildeone Ha, ha! Thanks so much, man. The accents are something I still have to work on. Just nice, smooth, even single strokes played at a high speed have always been a pain in the ass for me. By the time I revisit this song with the updated recording setup, my hope is to have that part of things squared away :)
You've actually inspired me to get back into drums again. Been on a 15 year "hiatus", & watching you reminded me of all the COUNTLESS hours I spent, having fun & learning Bonzo's stuff! Keep it up!
hi hello ludwig called they want to endorse u !!!! great chops the soul of John bonnam is definitely in you :)
+Ultra cat Ha! I'd love that. I'll have to show them your comment if I ever get to talk to a Ludwig rep. Thanks so much for the kind words, my friend!
your my current inspiration! I get highly motivated when I watch dude's like you. Thank you!!
that was really good fun & u did a dam good job,, u no the song, ur a good drummer,,, what can I say ur good ,,,, Andy TELLEZ,,,, I really liked this,,, keep it up ,,,
+Andrew Tellez Thanks so much, Andrew! I can promise you I'll keep em' coming. I've got a lot of things in the works at the moment :)
man, you made it.
Great job, that song requires all of your attention and is very busy right from the get go not a problem for you.
God damn!!!!…..a chrome Ludwig too!!!!!!……That kit sounds amazing, best snare sound I've heard in a long time. I love your vids, thank you.
Kevin N Ha, ha! You bet! Thank YOU!!!
I said not bad. What is wrong with me. That is awesome!
Man, your kits... Love em!! Yeah, your playing so pretty good too. ;)
jcballytrain Ha! Thanks so much, man! Very much appreciated :)
Excellent!
Genius
proffpuff I'll take it!
Wow man, you nailed it. Excellent job 👍🏻
Thats a nice interpretation and very close to Bonzo. Excellent stuff. Nice kit too.
All your videos are great, you nailed it. You are extremely talented. Please do not take the following comment with any disrespect but more of a hope for your future.
Find your own voice.
Not at all, my friend! I enjoy putting the Led Zeppelin covers up because it's fun to share in the Bonham worshiping, but I definitely have tried to broaden my own style beyond just his influence. By the way, you wouldn't happen to be the same Kevin Swan from Chris Thayer Band, would you? Because if you were, I'd happen to be your drummer...
No sorry, that's not me.
Glad to hear. Mike Portnoy once said to me "Steal from everyone but make it your own".
Sounds like you have that plan in place. Cheers.
From what I can tell you didn't miss a beat and holy f-kn cow your tuning and sound are bang-on too - Okay, so I'm not a drummer but I am a big Zep fan and I know this to be one of the more difficult, complicated Zep songs to play - how many takes did it take for you to get this right? Excellent, brother!!
I love your sound you are getting out of your Ludwig's awesome. I hope you and Led Zepagain, can do some of live versions of Zeppelin songs. Thats where Bonzo and company really shined. There live shows where amazing !! Great Job.
+Brad Patterson I totally agree, Brad! Fortunately, that's exactly the direction the band is headed. We've been playing a mixture of shows from 69-75 lately i.e. How The West Was Won, Earl's Court, Royal Albert Hall, but mixing in a few more songs that weren't played live very often or ever at all. We've done stuff like 'Out On The Tiles,' 'Gallow's Pole,' 'Hey, Hey What Can I Do?,' and a bunch of others mixed in with the live arrangements from those specific periods. It's been a blast!
I would love to come steal all of your drum kits lol.
Aced it! Beautifully done pal.I quite enjoyed watching this vid.
Awesome! 👏🏼
Thanks so much, Abraham! I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thanks so much for the nice comment!
Good lord...yes. This great !
Amazing man! good job!
Hugh richards Thanks so much, Hugh!
Great cover. Nice!!!
Impecable
Holy cow you are incredible
amazing
Excellent
Solid!
+Joseph Schaaphok Thanks so much, Joseph!
Good job man!!!
Thanks so much, Gaston!
Is there anything you do that is not f'ing amazing? Damn brother I love your playing. Would you happen to have a drums-only Carouselambra? Cheers
Is Funny,
You have your own way to play Zeppelin. There is always a variation on everything that I haven't found nowhere else (like the hi-hat on the Chorus where you play quarter note triplets on the ride bell.)
Left hand action on the hi-hat while hittin the bell of the ride is something I haven't seen before. Is that something you came up with because I don't recall Bonham doin that. FYI,...I like it!
That is a liberty I took with this one. I just felt like I couldn't make it flow as well as he did by doing the ghost notes on the snare, so I switched over to the hi-hat instead. I've since spent more time practicing how he actually played it and feel more comfortable with it now. However, even when I play this song live, I still play it with the hi-hat just because I feel more comfortable with the groove that way...
From one drummer to another, I totally get that! I, too, love playing the Bonham shuffle! I've heard a few drummers come real close to the grove, but still fail to actually get in the pocket, like Bonham himself! You sound every-bit as good as anyone I've heard on RUclips. Keep it up!
classic
+mmadadtx I'll take it, my friend! Thanks!
wow mate nailed it.
Pretty sure Bonham borrowed this from Purdie....sounds very close to The infamous Purdie Shuffle.... well done man you found that groove.
injectionspeed Without a doubt! I dig that he made it his own (within the context of the song they were writing), but you can definitely hear Purdie all over that groove.
cool
Zano 3 Thanks, Zano!
You need to get that kit and yourself to the Headley Grange staircase! STAT! Oh, and post the video of you playing there.
I absolutely love 1/2 time shuffle...whether it's Bonzo, Porcaro or the 1/2 time shuffle master himself, Mr. Purdie. Something I've never been worth a damn at. Great job MrMojo!! This lady is really tight with as well. Check her out. ruclips.net/video/hnX6tUJvM8o/видео.html
firstmusic00 Yeah, man! I had no idea this song was written by Led Zeppelin when I heard it on the radio. I was just getting into the band, and I remember hearing 'Fool In The Rain' on the radio and admiring how different a sound it was and wondering what band it was from. The drum beat in particular just grooved sooo hard. Low-and-behold...And I love Bernard Purdie! That guy exemplifies a great drummer! Great style and feel, and an awesome personality to go along with it all.
Spot on man! Keep posting;)
mate can i ask you some question ? How did you play all of led zeppelin song with a same beat and the tempo ? please show me how to do it... Thanks and i love all of your videos ;)
+Ardhan Bismamukti No problemo, Ardhan. I'm wearing in-ear headphones that are connected to the computer. You can't see it in the videos, but right before the footage starts, I've just hit record on my keyboard and set it down next to me. From that point on, I'm recording straight into my computer while listening to the track at the same time. I make sure to have the song at a pretty decent volume so that I just focus on that part of things, and not what I'm actually playing myself. I think that helps me keep the feel and tempo of the song I'm working on.
DAT BASSDRUM
Awesome dude! Ghosting a bit too much, though. Also, the 6 over 4 ride part is wrong. He keeps his right hand on the ride and clicks the hats with his foot.
This is true. I'd like to revisit this one in the future to get it more accurate.
MrMojoRisin1967
Don't get me wrong, though. You nail the Bonham feel.
👍👍
Awesome! "The snare solo is too easy. I guess I'll just imply some of the timbales overdubs by bouncing around the toms AT THE SAME FRIKKING TIME."
That's the most fun part of the whole dang thing!
how did you do this? this is perfect
Ha, ha! Not quite, but I'm glad you think so. This is one I'd like to revisit sometime soon and try to get a little closer.
Just realized you live in Chi burbs
jcballytrain Fortunately/Unfortunately, I don't. I'm in Southern California.
Thats what i'm talkin about. wreck that shit. fuck it, its supposed to be heavy and raw. this has groooooove
nice impro over the samba part. PS that shit was overdubbed in the studio.
Hey man, how did you figure out Bonham tuning?
Justin Pierce Quite a bit of trial and error, as well as watching a lot of videos here on RUclips and a lot of listening to Bonham and Led Zeppelin :) I've put together a tuning tutorial on how I tune my drums here: ruclips.net/video/gtGavIi3LfE/видео.html
Smash it like Bonham 👍
Crash it like Bonham 👍
Fucking great job mate
Which hi hat? And snare drum ?
Hi Hats are 15" Paiste 2002 Sound Edge (from 1977), and the Snare Drum is a Ludwig LM402 Supraphonic 6.5x14.
fuck yeah
Can you give me the info on these drums
Michaeltdrumz These are 1979 Ludwig Stainless Steel drums. Sizes are 14x24, 10x14, 16x16x and 16x18. They are made completely of stainless steel, with no wood on them what-so-ever except for the hoops on the bass drum...
minute 3:47 timbal ?¿???? drums????¿
That was the idea, yes :) When I record this again, I am going to try to do all the percussion overdubs as well.
What Ride Cymbal are you using?
24" Paiste Giant Beat
Which Ride?
Paiste 24" Giant Beat
Wha if you change the pitch a semitone or two?
That's not a bad idea. I may give that a try next time I have a minute or two to spare.
Not bad
are you Jason Bonham?
YOU PLAY EXACTLY LIKE BONHAM I DON GET IT
Grow out your hair and beard and nobody would know the difference. Great job KILB.
not quite the feel ,bu t preety good ,
Beautiful , great job :)
Love this cover. ❤if you haven’t already seen it @bonzoleum check this out Terry ❗️
Thanks so much! ☺️ There's a lot I'd like to improve about this cover, and I'll need to revisit it sooner than later. And actually, Terry has become a very friendly acquaintance! I wish we lived closer to each other, but the last time I played a show in Chicago, I had a chance to have lunch with Terry and George Fludas, and it was AWESOME! They're great guys and incredible musicians!
Thats a nice interpretation and very close to Bonzo. Excellent stuff. Nice kit too.
