    DISCLAIMERS ON FORMATS COVERED:
    Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth. Now Popular does not mean official even though two of the formats I will be covering were official formats being Japan Nintendo Cup and VGC, but it is an indicator of what a good portion of competitive players thought was “optimal” at the time. Also sometimes the Pokemon Battle Historia doesn't provide enough information to talk about certain Pokemon so I add Smogon analysis to make sense of it. This is pretty rare though.
    To the people asking why I don't cover Smogon Singles for Gens 1 and 2: It wouldn't really be a history video if I covered those because online Smogon gen 1 meta to my knowledge wasn't actually played until late 2000s. I wanted to cover tournaments/competitive battling that was actually played during the early years of Pokemon (late 90s).
    To the people asking why I cover Smogon at all for singles: To my knowledge, Smogon was the most popular format for Gens 3-5 and held a number of tournaments throughout the years. As for Gen 6, I am not covering Battle Spot Singles because there is more information and explanations about sets being used relative to their own meta on Smogon. In other words, there are few written analyses about Battle Spot Pokemon besides the Top tiers and I would like to avoid theorycrafting because it may have a hint of bias (though I theorycraft if I REALLY couldn't find information on a certain Pokemon). The keyword here is explanations. Though I did find statistics of most Pokemon used and most moves used, there wasn't really any explanations on why. Also the few Pokemon I did find analysis of for Top Tier Battle Spot Singles had very similar move sets to the Smogon OU sets anyway.
    For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent and I will not fault you for using evasion or whatever, I just like examining popular tournament formats.

    I was waiting for this for some time. Electivire is a shining example of a Pokemon that looks so good on paper but ends up performing miserably. Its stats look good, its movepool looks fantastic, it has a cool ability, but in the end, it fails to do the one thing it should be doing well: Killing things. Electivire will forever be remembered as the pokemon that taught us that "It's super effective" does not always mean you will get a 1HKO.

      If they gave it a fighting typing as well as the moves volt tackle, close combat and mach punch, it would be so much more viable. And it seriously bothers me how gamefreak never considered making the electabuzz line electric/fighting when they based it on both onis (ogre like creatures with immense physical Strength in japanese mythology) and raijins (shintoist divinities that can summon Lightning), gave it mixed attacking stats (well, mostly electabuzz) AND gave it a bunch of fighting type moves. I swear, it's almost like they're trolling us by making all these pure types pokemon who SHOULD be dual typed but aren't because shut up (special mention goes to Luxray).

      Better yet, if you want to make him jump STRAIGHT to OU/UUBL or possibly even Ubers (which is doubtable lmfao) give him an ability that gives all punching moves priority, it’ll take full advantage of its punching attacks!
      I don’t think he’ll be Ubers with that because he lacks a good boosting move, and to be in the OU metagame, having a great 123 attack isn’t as impressive unless you’re banded.
      A metagame where Pokémon are gradually becoming stronger than previous generations, this is why it could be hard for Electivire to find his place easily; however, priority oriented punches allows you to not stress about out speeding your opponent too much since there’s a 95% you’ll always go first, thus you can confidently go for Adamant nature and invest in a offensive bulky set to compensate for the above average defenses by investing defensive EV’s, and STILL confidently will outspeed your opponent most-likely.
      This ability could either be called _”Lightning Fists”_ or _”Flash Fists”_

    Ah Electivire. I was one of those noob kids during Diamond and Pearl that read its OU Smogon page and was caught by the allure of its bonkers coverage and it holds the distinction of being one of the few Pokemon I bothered to breed proper moves onto in Gen 4. At the time however, I didn't realize OU had nothing to do with the catridge and that there was an online ladder so fortunately I didn't humiliate myself too much. Electivire, while terrible, will always hold a place in my heart for marking one of my firsts steps in properly understanding competitive Pokemon.

    fun fact: In gen 6, there was a short lived FU metagame (the prequel to ZU, fuctioning as a tier below PU).
    In this metagame Electabuzz was the face of the entire tier, it was very fast for the tier, pretty bulky with eviolite, and had amazing coverage which made it the easiest pokemon to fit on a team. It also had very little competition as an electric type. While it might not have been the most powerful pokemon in the tier, fraxture probably took that title, it had something like 60% usage if my mind serves me correctly.
    That tier was hella fun, i miss it

    It fails for the exact same reason Luxray (an extremely similar pokemon) fails; identity crisis over physical/special attack when you want to go one or the other really, not enough speed (95 versus 105 makes an ENORMOUS difference competitively), and physical electric attacks fucking suck.
    seriously, why does Wild charge recoil when thunderbolt doesn't recoil, has the exact same amount of damage, and has a slight paralyze chance (on top of not making contact)? Not fair.

      Leavanny The Cute Mantis That’s what I’m saying; though Electivire’s speed is fairly average (95 still out speeds plenty of Pokémon), the real issue is something it shares with Luxray, rather shallow movepools (or rather “movepuddles”) that don’t have good STAB moves nor very strong moves. As well as defenses that would make human skin laugh hysterically.

    It would take a lot to fix Electivire nowadays, but I think the 10 point drop to speed is a big part of what really killed it in DPP and lower tiers later on. Even if it couldn’t always get an OHKO, it would be able to outspeed a large portion of the metagame unboosted, comfortably outspeeding the ever common base 100s and even the infamous Garchomp while it was in the tier. It could far more reliably dish out damage, meaning that it wouldn’t be completely reliant on motor drive, and having walls wouldn’t be as much of an issue since it could still snipe faster Pokémon.

      Not just that but an Electric Typing just by itself is just bad....
      Bearly any resistances and weak to the common Earthquake is just terrible. I mean Zapdos, Rotom-W and Rotom-W have typings that give them far more better offensive and defensive niches far better than vire could ever dream of

    • @jayclearmen411
      @jayclearmen411 2 года назад

      I think Electrizer should have an effect like Light Ball. Where it Doubles It’s SPD, Defense & Special Defense stats!! that will bring him back from the brink!!

  • @1BlueYoshi

    I remember I tried running Electivire on my Electric team in Gen 7 Monotype because I needed another physical attacker besides Koko. It wasn’t pretty. Everything you mentioned was spot on: too frail, too slow, doesn’t get KOs. Once Zeraora was released I dropped Electivire and never looked back for even a second lol

    • @bryanc1772
      @bryanc1772 3 года назад +1

      You also had Thundurus, Elecktross, and Alolan-Golem as viable Electric Attackers.
      There weren't that many good physical electric attackers sadly in Gen 7. But Dracozolt is now a thing in Gen 8 and Zekrom too but its Uber

    • @1BlueYoshi
      @1BlueYoshi 3 года назад

      @@bryanc1772 I never really tried the other ones you mentioned, but pre Crown Tundra I ran Dracozolt and unfortunately it was a disappointment. 80% accuracy might as well have been 50% accuracy for how often it hit things in the crucial moments I needed it to

    • @bryanc1772
      @bryanc1772 3 года назад

      @@1BlueYoshi Yea thats true although you can use its other abilities if you hate the miss.
      Gamefreak honestly just hasn't created a lot of good electric physical attackers. They are worse off now since they lost HP ice

    • @1BlueYoshi
      @1BlueYoshi 3 года назад

      @@bryanc1772 Without hustle it's not strong enough, but with hustle it never hits, although maybe banded with Sand Rush might be able to do something, but it wouldn't work in monotype because setting up sand would not be ideal for the rest of the team.
      And also yeah definitely, RIP HP Ice. I was trying to think of a way to make Rain Weather Ball work as a way to sorta replace it but although rain is better for Electric than sand it is still hard fitting it on the team

      Jynx without a doubt deserves an episode as she along with Golem are the last of the OU tier in Gen 1! I really want Persian as it is my favorite Pokemon and even though it may suck, it still has some uses if you ask me! Hopefully all these Pokemon get episodes soon :-)!

    Given how they've headlined both Baby forms and new evolutions in the past, I'm surprised Magmortar and Electivire didn't continue that trend and receive Mega Evolutions. Deep six both of Mewtwo's forms (or give it and Charizard one form each) and replace them with these, and the Mag/Elec duo would finally be as powerful as that Blaine battle and status as Paul's ace (respectively) would suggest.

      Persian in a nutshell:
      -gen1= STAB critical Slash spammer
      -gen2= neutered
      -gen3= fast, weak hitter
      -gen4= Fake Out spammer or gimicky Nasty Plot sweeper
      -gen5= Fake Out + U-turn spammer or gimmicky Nasty Plot sweeper
      -gen6= same as the above
      -gen7 Alolan form= fast and bulky Foul Play spammer who trolls Metagross, Garchomp, Landorus, etc to death who can also do Parting Shot pivoting...but gets wrecked by Special hits.
