Just want to say what a huge inspiration you are. I’ve watched all your Triple Crown videos, including your 24 hour challenge on the PCT. 61 miles!!!! 😳 I have a condition called Spastic Paraplegia (essentially MS). The side effects of which have left me with serious gate issues. While I’ll never be a thru hiker, or even a section hiker, you have inspired me to get off my butt and push myself. Tonight, I walked a mile. I just kept telling myself “If Dixie can hike thousands and thousands of miles, including over 60 in 24 hours, I can walk a mile.” Wasn’t a trail walk or anything rugged but I pushed myself and made it a little over a mile. Huge deal for this guy! Thank you for your informative and entertaining videos and for your inspiration! Keep kickin rocks my friend!!! You are amazing!

2:44 I’ve learned how critical that adjustment is on two packs I own. When it’s too loose, the pack weight isn’t locked to the hip belt and the pack sags, placing more weight on your shoulders. I’ve learned to look for that on new packs.

@@HomemadeWanderlust 3:05 watching you from the side it doesn't look that the load lifters at your pack work as intended - they should pull the shoulder straps upwards but can't because they are too low. Which means either your pack is too short for your torso length, or the hip belt sits too low in this moment.

Really enjoyed your FT videos. The adjustment on the waist belt is called the Delta Strap on most of the technical packs I’ve owned. It’s recommended that it as well as all other adjustments be loosened and tightened every time you doff and don your pack for proper fitment. There are some really good videos talking about pack adjustment by Hill People Gear and even Kifaru on RUclips. Even if you’d never use one of their packs they are pretty much the authorities on load carriage and may be a good watch considering all the weight you carry in camera equipment. Since you like neck knives you should check out the White River Model 1 Backpacker (2.5 oz) or the Knucklehead 2 (1.7 oz.). Never really cared for the UL movement and while I’ll never use a UL pack I have incorporated some UL gear into my pack. I like how you’ve mixed it up and you’ve won me over as a fan despite my best efforts to resist lol! 😂

I use the same stove, the burner was remarkably cheap. It does have a very concentrated flame, so the pan will catch easily and burn if there is any starch/sugar in the mix. The little control wire is capable of getting very hot if I use a windshield, but it easily turns using a fork/spork or similar tool. However the weight saving is impressive, will boil water very quickly.

I find it amazing, considering all the standing water y'all had to slog through, that you didn't get attacked by leeches. I went to FSU (many moons ago), and I liked to wade-fish a lot of the water around Tallahassee; the first time I tried it, I made the mistake of going in with shorts - within seconds, I had 4 or 5 of the bloodsuckers on me...after that, I wore old jeans.

      Good Morning
Leeches can be harmful in two ways.
1.) The suck blood out of you ( like a swarm of mosquitoes on steroids.
2.) If they have been in dirty ( a swamp ) there is the chance of infection at the " bite ".

    • @Robutube1
      @Robutube1 3 года назад

@@RoyADane Quite right Roy. Never pull them off because they leave their mouth parts behind. Old school is to burn them off with a cigarette, but salt also works, as does identifying the mouth end and sliding a blade/edge slowly between the mouth and your skin.

Hey Dixie, Loafer here...I went with long OR Ferrosi pants which keep the sun and bugs off while being kinda cool. And I stuck with BD Alpine Carbon Cork trekking poles because I like the rubber tech tips that screw in for all the road walks and I've found the rubber boots for poles get sucked under the mud and disappear. Oh, and my Filson Summer Packer hat is my new favorite piece of gear.

Very much enjoyed the series, and all your videos. Something you could generate a program on is foot management on the Florida Trail. I read a lot of trail journals, the FT ones inevitably start with 2-3 days wading, followed by hikers feet falling apart with blisters once they start the levies. So either your feet are bulletproof, or you have some techniques on managing wet feet on the trail.

I'm living in New York City right now, but grew up in a town along the PCT section hiking and doing shorter backpacking trips on weekends and school breaks in California up in the Sierras with my dad, who has backpacked all over the Sierra Nevada and knows literally everyone in that world--the guy who owns the Kennedy Meadows General Store is an old pal of his who watched me grow up, he's friends with all of the sporting goods store owners in the towns along the Sierra Nevada, and he knows just about every person at every pack station. I grew up high in the mountains with a pack on! I'm two years out of college and realized pretty recently how miserable New York is making me and am planning to leave in a few years when my student loans are paid off. In the meantime, I'm trying to figure out how to incorporate backpacking (not necessarily thru hiking at this stage, but maybe one day! I love weekend trips and trips that are a week or two or three for now), hiking, and camping back into my life. This channel has been so helpful for me to navigate that after a couple of years of not really having access to backpacking, and because my dad is a gear minimalist who has been backpacking all over the Southwestern United States since the 60s, when gear was just a lot different. He's old school and a minimalist, which is great, but means he sometimes has knowledge gaps or doesn't follow practices he should. This is terrible and not advice I think anyone should follow, but I have never in all of my life filtered water, and I've backpacked allllll over the place up the West Coast. He just never has, and I grew up thinking that was normal. Admittedly, I've never gotten sick, but my fiance has a theory that I have some kind of super stomach from drinking so much unfiltered water lol. So even though I'm lucky to have tons of survival/wilderness skills and know how to hike and pack a pack and live on the trail for at least weeks on end, I don't know that much about modern gear and practices like that. I've been learning a lot, as I'm getting ready to go back to California for the summer to work remotely and spend my weekends up in the mountains. I know it's a different kind of animal to thru hiking, but it's what I grew up doing and it's something I love. This channel has brought me so much joy and I've learned so much! Thanks, Dixie.

But.....when I use it for winter and have to carry more clothing and heavier pad, heavier quilt, bag liner, gloves, beanie and hand warmers my pack tends to be over 30lbs. Once over 30lbs the ohm doesn't carry nearly as well, and that makes sense bc ULA's recommendation is under 30lbs

RE: Altras and their sizing - maybe they changed their form mold for how they made it, since most trail hikers size up anyway (from 1/2 to full-size up!) and decided to make them bigger to compensate. The way to check is.... look at the EU sizing - which in your case would be a 44 or so. So on your new Altras (or used by now!) if they are 44s and they said the same in your old ones... then there you go.
I rarely go with the American sizing anymore just because of how divergent they are in their foot forms in designing shoes.

Injinji socks are truly a godsend on the FT. I had one pair that I wore the entire time (not recommended but still). They dried quickly overnight and I had no issues with blisters. Also make sure you empty the sediment out of your shoes when you can.

I think the swamp wading, the bugs, the snakes, the alligators, and the dead manatees will make it some time before this becomes a popular thru-hike.

What is the little stainless steel thing with the pink plastic tip in your cup at 6:07? A metal straw?
Also I wonder if you have ever tried the sun umbrella hats? Yes, they lmake you look like a dorky samurai, but if since they leave your hands free and are doubtless lighter than umbrellas with their handles I wonder if they would be worth considering...

I was so distraught at learning that while spending a few days in St. Marks you were nearby but our paths never crossed. Also, wondering if you have considered hiking the trail from Venezuela to the Rio Grande that’s so popular these days. Aside from that . . . Damn! What a woman.

@@timrobinson6573 yeah, man, only a creep would recognize what an attractive and interesting woman she is and hope to meet her by chance and chat on a hike. (Oops, unless you meant through hiking the migrant trail.)
