  • Today we are talking about failures of the VW Tiguan. The failures of the Tiguan are rather minor, other than issues with the 2.0T TSI engine. That is where most of the failures come from. I left out many of the TSI engine failures from this video. Check out the video I did on TSI engine failures.

It is so annoying when people get in the comments to say "I don't have those issues or I have had no issues. " You have to realize you if they have sold 300,000 units....you have one of those units. You might be the lucky one. Clearly these observations are over the course of years of being a mechanic.

Great video! I'm searching for a late model used Tiguan. I turned in my Passat TDI and have been driving a 2012 Jetta 2.5 that I picked up really cheap and would like to add another vehicle. These things drop like rocks in value compared crossovers like RAV4 and CRV. The Tiguan is really an excellent value used. I just hope its not a nightmare to own.

There are a few things that need to be addressed if you buy an old one. They are okay... just okay. That comes from someone who owns one. Well we are leasing one. I do think I would like it less if we owned it. But knowing we can give the keys back in a year is nice.

Very sporty and one at 145000 km and the other at 187000 km and we plan on keeping them into the 300000 plus range at least. My employer has 50-60 Tiguans, they are driven around 50000km a year, around half of that is with a 1500kg+ trailer attatched and the rest stop and go never more than 2 km between stops.
They have so far had no really bad faults, other than beeing too small for 5 grown men. The rear door is too small for getting large workboots in and out quickly and the center cupholder in the rear is broken in every single one because of bad placement. (when someone has to sit in the middle with big heavy workboots they kick them to pieces getting in and out)
I don't really like them due to the auto-wipers and electronic parkingbreak, also the steering wheel it too high even in the lowest setting. but those things aren't exclusive to the tiguan, but every new car I've tryed..

In the ~5 years I had one, we had just about all of these. I'm pretty sure the only reason we didn't have a sunroof leak is because we didn't have a sunroof. I just about lit it on fire when our tensioner went out. Luckily no catastrophic damage (or I would have for sure). Also lucky our RMS hadn't blown. New owner is probably dealing with that now or already did.

I don’t understand how anybody can say anything positive about these cars. Anything with the 2.0T CCTA in it. This 2016 Tiguan I’m dealing with for a customer is such a massive pile of shit. It has a perpetual P2015 code. Absolutely nothing I do will get rid of it. I’ve changed the whole front half of the damn engine and carbon cleaned and STILL P2015. Every time I change something another part breaks a week later. Turbo failure, water pump failure, manifold runner failure, leaking everywhere, carbon building up so fast on the intake valves it’s absurd. It eats oil like it’s gasoline but it has no head gasket or compression issues. Just dogshit engines VAG should be sued for ever putting this CCTA in a vehicle let alone ALL their vehicles. I’ll never work on another one again. Just stupid headaches for no good reason. Money isn’t worth it. This P2015 code is from Satan himself

How does a Tiguan owner mitigate the carbon buildup in the intake manifold? Is there a fuel additive that you would recommend?

    • @HumbleMechanic
      @HumbleMechanic  2 года назад

Good fuel, good oil and full throttle daily. Additives can help but won’t prevent

I have a 2010 in Australia, with 200k kms, always run on premium 98 (95 in the States), oil change every 10k kms with new oil/air filters, coolant every 20k kms (very hot in Australia), also have a Forge catch can kit custom designed for Tiguan. When manifold was replaced at 110k km, the intake valves were resonably clean. Haven't had any issue with manifold or intake valve like mis-firing since. I think clean fuel and oil are the keys, catch can may not be needed at all as the stuff being caught is just clean oil.

Bought a brand-new 2017 Tiguan SEL, front wheel drive. We have 2400 miles on it and my wife has told me three times she has felt a slight jolt like somebody bumped her from behind. Any ideas what that could be from. All three times she was completely stopped with her foot on the brake at idle before driving on. Does this car have dry dual clutch automatic type issues like you hear about with Fords. She never got any kind of failure light indications. Thanks for all your great videos. We love Tiguans!

My 2009 tiguan has about 115000 km on it, and now needs (for the third time) a new water pump. I recently spent about $1500 on replacing my old manifold and fixing something in the gearbox (if I recall I don't know). The tig still needs that new pump, new suspensions and I don't know what. Yep, not the most reliable vehicle, but still a fun and quick VW.

Hey man! Awesome videos! I'm thinking of grabbing a 2011 Tiguan with 60,000 miles on it. Car drove like a dream and started up great. My only concern is I see a lot of water pump, turbo, and timing complaints on these Tiguans right around the 60,000 mark. Would you say those are rare, probably user inflicted cases? (Too long between oil changes, etc.) or would you advise to stay away from the vehicle all together? The vehicle had one owner, and driven an average of only 6000 miles a year. Thanks a lot!

I currently own a 2011 fwd Tiguan 2.0t. it is a very fun car! Faster than most road cars, fat enough for whatever ya need. However, they have a recall for a timing chain tensioner that could nuke the engine in that mile range. Also, fwd is shit with turbo and weight, so it is not too good in the rain.... Mine's had two crashes at low speeds simply because ABS didn't kick in or traction control couldn't handle the weight of the SUV. If you live in a fair weather area you're golden!

Here are my problems with Tiguan
    - EPC error
    - Roof leak. Tried fixing the hoses and cleared debris but still had leaks
    - Roof leak contributed to roof cloth adhesive to come off. My panoramic cloth has fallen on one side
    - Oil leaks. I replaced the gasket a few months ago. Then another oil leak happened.
    - Coolant leak
    - Back door unable to stay up
I love my car but these problems make me spend a lot more in maintenance

I have a 2018 Tiguan bought it brand new. Every ~2,000 miles the low oil light comes on. I take it VW and they all tell me it’s normal to burn a lot of oil. Every time they add about a quart and half of oil. I drive about 300 miles a month and they are around town. It has 12,000 miles right now and the low oil has come on 4 times since purchasing the Tiguan. Is this really normal oil consumption ???

Hi, I had to come back to you again because I know you are best with VW Tiguan.
I am hearing a sound for about 3 seconds just before full stop, a sound like jet engine shutting off, not loud. This started right after I drained the transmission fluid from the pan and refilled the exact amount of fluid that I drained. Other than this strange gear shutting sound, my 2011 Tiguan run smooth and nice. I had to drain the fluid in order to remove the transmission fluid pan when I had to replace the lower control arms. Only thing I did not do is not using those computer software when I refilled. I warmed up the transmission pan to body temperature when I refilled the fluid and stopped refilling when the overflow tube stopped dripping.
My first question is if the transmission gears make any sound like that when the automatic transmission shifts down to lowest gear when the fluid level is not perfect?
My second question is if the check engine light comes on when the transmission fluid level is not perfect?
I appreciate your help on these.

I have a freakishly long torso and from the head room, the left arm rest and the center arm rest that raises up to meet my stubby arms this car is so comfortable for me. Plus I love VW's. I have a 2012 and love the look of it. I looked at a Land Rover first but my head it the headliner so it was out. Really worried about this timing chain issue and hope it fails in the next 28k miles before my warranty goes out. I had a Fiat X-19 with a rubber timing belt that broke and trashed my engine. That car broke down 20 times around town. Was my first car. I laugh at all the Fiats being sold now. Thanks for the video. It was fun.
