  • In this video, you can join us for a fun BOING (Breeding Orchids by Intelligent but Naive Growers) deflasking party in the orchid lab! We had 12 participants and 14 flasks of different orchid crosses to remove and pot in classic grade Orchiata bark. Everyone had fun and worked hard to take home from 24 - 50 orchid seedlings in 2 inch pots. These were all new crosses and some of them were really big. This was our second deflasking party of 2024 and these folks are getting really good at this - fast deflasking with a high survival rate of the seedlings...

It was fun for most of the participants - too much pressure for some....

I love it! Got to try something like this some day, if I ever go overboard with my sowing... which I probably will! I doubt the enthusiasm of the Boingers can be matched, though...

I do have a few members of the group who have started throwing their own deflasking party - maybe, we can make this standard practice!!!

I think that everyone enjoyed receiving so many new hybrid seedlings - now, the pressure is on to see how many survive and who will be the first to flower....

@@plantpropagator You could create ribbons to award first bloomers, fastest growers, best survival rate, stuff like that. Just a little bit more pressure! Just to keep the group on their toes! And on each other's heels.

@@Naturamorpho That is a great idea but I am afraid that the people in this group will not go for ribbons - They are really good growers and already have lots of ribbons and AOS awards. I think that they would prefer simple bragging rights and I will float that.

@@plantpropagatorI get it. But, you see, a ribbon is just a bragging right that you can share a picture of! 😂

This looks like so much fun! Logistics question- for access to water - Did you have them use the bins with water to help remove the media and just dump water and refill with bark?

Bins will work if you do not have sinks. This room had 3 sinks and participants were told to avoid putting too much medium or plants in the sinks but I think that some got away. I usually put the deflasked clean orchids back in the cleaned flasks but people (for some reason??) wanted to put them on paper towels out in the open. I do not like doing that but I guess that one person started doing that and everyone else followed. The bark was premoistened with hot water for 30-60 min in a large bucket and then added to the bins on the table.
