Manta Rescue!

  • Such an amazing experience/rescue! Diving in the Philippines April 2014 with Manta Rays. One approached us with fishing line slicing right through her wing. Our guide spent several attempts to cut her free and finally removed the barnacle encrusted fishing line. She swam with us for over 10minutes until we were low on air & had to leave. We watched while on our safety stop as she continued to circle below us with another Manta ray. I am convinced she stayed with us for help as this was the longest & closest interaction during the week of diving. Kudos to our guide 'GL'! A truly amazing & emotional experience.

I am a marine biologist studying the mantas in Ticao. Wanted to tell you the same manta (now nicknamed Jane, if that's ok by you) came back today (25 october 2014), sstayed for a few hours, and looked healthy and happy :)
    Best wishes,
    Yotam

Hi Yotam, I am thrilled that you have seen her again & she appears to be in good health! I am stoked that you have nicknamed her Jane :) I guess GL will be OK with that as she is a female. I am also pleased that the video has assisted in drawing attention to you studies on Mantas in the area. Good luck with that. Hopefully we will return one day soon!

These animals have 'cleaning stations' areas where fish will congregate to feed of injuries and parasites of the 'guests'. The feeding cleans the wounds and removes the parasites. This means the larger 'guests' know that they can be helped. Maybe they have started to lesrn that we can be cleaners as well. The DM was extremely brave to get on the manta's back. The action of stinging is totally a reflex (like a sneeze), she could have easily hurt or killed him. I'm glad to here that she has been sighted as seems healthy and has now been named 'Jane'.

I applaud the humans who help those in need of rescue . This old girl was probably in a lot of pain from the gash & didn't expect to be touched So her flinching the and hesitation and were both understandable.
I am absolutely grateful that they didn't give up finally got the line and barnacles off of her !!!
I believe that animals have a sixth sense about being willing to accept help.....Many years ago, my neighbors dog got all but skinned alive by a mail truck one summer bc she wasn't leashed or fenced.
The owner Could not deal with it & didn't have a vet so l wrapped her up in a soft blanket and took her to my vet.
She was given IV antibiotics and pain medication. Her owner did not want to deal with it and wanted to put her down & my vet said that was the owners right but with some nursing back to health she would be okay. Said that barring an infection there is nothing that time and daily care could not fix. Owner opted out & said "I'll just get another dog" 😶
So 4 days later I took her home & because I volunteered to take care of her the awesome vet did not charge us for her care. They gave us pads for her to rest on ( by bedtime every day, she'd end up bloody till her skin healed) gauze, saline, ointment & liquid vitamins.
We set up a little "hospital room" 4 her under the dining room table & l hung sheets so she'd have privacy. She laid there for three weeks, only moving to go take bathroom breaks & eat.
My 3 young kids wanted pet & cuddle her but obviously couldn't so they sang to her, read her books and picked flowers for her.....
That sweet dog was in such terrible pain and while she whimpered a lot , every day she allowed me to clean her wounds, pull away dead skin with tweezers as per vet instructions and bandage her.
Id been afraid she'd bite me but she never did. No snarling, no screeching (l would have) just sweet eyed looks and licks to my hand. Somehow, though we were virtual strangers she knew we'd just wanted her to be okay
She fully recovered and Pepper stayed with us the rest of her days, and I'll never forget her amazing ability to trust
    🧡🐕🧡

November 2019: your video still astonished at the care you have taken - to remove that line that was cutting through her. Thank you for sharing.

Its amazing that a manta, turtle, dolphin, whale or other animal comes to a human for help when it was another human who caused her pain. Will we ever learn to live with nature?

Such a beautiful, gentle, iconic (to say the least) creature,
some human idiots with their "hobby" aren't even aware of how hard it is just to survive in wild environment
