  • The in-depth story of the Branson Duck Boat Tragedy 2018.
On July 19, 2018, a duck boat carrying 31 people capsized on Table Rock Lake in near-hurricane conditions. Seventeen people died when the "Ride the Ducks" boat sank due to an incoming storm.
The 70-minute excursion usually starts on land with a tour of Branson’s tourist sights, but survivor Tia says the tour operator indicated they would do the lake part of the tour first as stormy weather was predicted. Less than thirty minutes later, the amphibious vehicle would sink to the bottom of the lake.

I’m from the KC area and everyone around here flocks to Table Rock & Lake of the Ozarks. I only rode on the Duck Boat once as a pre-teen (20ish years ago) and as much as I loved a good thrill and was so excited about it when boarding, it was sketchy af the moment we went into the water. It was slow as hell, constantly sounded like it was getting bogged down, and the water was just barely below the windows (in excellent weather). Imagine seeing water levels up to the windows of a school bus and trying to calculate whether or not you can fit through the gap at the top if you were to open it.
This story was heartbreaking for every KC local knowing that it could’ve been themselves or practically any other person that they loved.

Oh and I'd like to add that as far as the weather on the lake goes, the lake effect is a real thing. Just because the weather forecasts one thing it could be better or worse than predicted on the lake. Infact just the temperature for the day varies so much between the different cities that most people that live in and around Branson just ignore the weather forecast because of how inaccurate it is. Example one day this year the forecast called for rain and a low temp. Well the difference in temperature was enough that in the Reed Springs area we got rain and Branson west (about 15ish minutes away) got a layer of snow. Not trying to justify the drivers actions cuz he shouldn't have chanced it but I also can understand why he may have thought it wasn't going to be as bad as it was.

I went on a duck boat tour in Seattle WA and it was a clear summer day but they should have told us that incliment weather would mean not being on the water for safety reasons. I remember seeing another video that covered this accident. It mainly was a mix of poor management and the design of the duck boat. Apperantly SD7 (Stretch Duck 7) was modified to hold more people and they removed/replaced a lot of the features that made the boat able to float in those conditions. Yet the other boat out there (Duck 54) was a more updated modified version with a more reinforced front that let it handle the water a lot better (hence why it didn't sink.)
I will say though that the Original Wisconsin Ducks (the state one for me and supposedly the original DB Tours) more focused on safety and are careful about how their boats are maintained and how weather conditions are (at least last time I went on one. That was years ago)

There was a steel plate in the original Ducks that could be erected on the foredeck to allow the steel plate to ride up onto waves thus lifting the nose....
The foredeck hatch is propped open on this Duck because more powerful modern engines require more cooling...so the hatch is propped open for more airflow as the radiator is inside the hull....
Since the nose no longer has the steel plate and dives down under the waves...the waves rush over the forecdeck and down the open hatch.
The Duck rapidly fills with water..and sinks.
      Pure negligence and stupidity...

We enjoyed our original duck boat tour at Wisconsin Dells in the 1990s. They had original WW2 duck boats without any modification except the canopy, no side curtains. Of course we went on a calm day and on the River the duck boat would quickly beach if there was a sudden storm. Part of the attraction was sailing on an original WW2 boat. The new, modern duck boats look cool and I'm sure they are much safer. But it's not the same as a vintage.

These "boats" still operating in the 21st century as tourist traps is beyond reprehensible. They were originally designed as a stop gap for interim use until more adequate systems could be developed, not as 100 year old working tech. In short, they are completely obsolete! What is even worse about them, is that not only are they obsolete, many of the actual safety features designed on these vehicles that did work, have either been discarded, as in the case of the surf plates, or heavily modified, including the water tight access hatches and lowering the gunwales and extending the height of the vessels, as was the case for this Duck. There was a duck right next to this one, that had slightly more seaworthy design mods and it still struggled to get back to shore, but this one never had a chance.
I spent nearly 4 years on an AMTRAC and every time you dropped into the ocean, you literally PRAYED! I never felt 100 percent safe and the technology was almost light years ahead of what it was on the old Ducks. I wouldn't want to be in one of those things in calm water, let alone chop. If there was a problem and the bilge pump invariably failed to keep up, it's nothing but a floating coffin without enough power to overcome the drag to get you to safety.

My husband and I took a duck boat tour when visiting Boston. I am not usually fearful in boats, but even though it was a smooth ride, I felt very nervous in this boat because of how low it seemed to be in the water. Never again. This tragedy in Missouri never should have happened because the weather forecast warned of an incoming storm. May all who lost their lives Rest In Peace, and deepest condolences to their loved ones and the survivors.

If your going to take a duck boat ride you better have good situational awareness and be able to swim. I lived in Branson when this happened. I remember the storm and then shortly after hearing Branson echoing with emergency sirens. The storm came fast but it was also known that it was coming. There is no excuse for going out onto the water during this. From customers to the boats captain should of known better.

My college, during orientation week would have an afternoon where the students new to the campus got to go on the Ducks for free. I believe the original DUKW were never intended for such stormy conditions. That is why they had to pick a calm day carefully for the D day invasion. Even a purpose build boat would have trouble in 70 mph winds and waves. The DUKW can take a moderate among of sea state but this is really dumb.

I rode the “Ducks” at the Wisconsin Dells back in the early 2000s. I had no idea they were so vulnerable but it makes sense with the extra machinery and metal. The local theme park had a roller coaster that was unsafe as well even 15 year old kids were complaining about the stress and pain to their necks after the ride. Then on top of that the horse rides I mean those horses were obviously neglected and poorly cared for. Yep Wisconsin Dells. Good old fashioned tourist trap.

I was on one of these Duck boats in the Wisconsin Dells, and I can tell you, they don't care about those things in the slightest. The teen driving would crank the transmission so hard that you could feel the Duck vibrate every time he shifted, he slammed the boat into terrain, and he even scraped the Duck on the side of some rocks with extremely visible damage, to which he then continued operation of it in the water. I was genuinely scared during the drive.

The problem with deathtraps (be they vehicles, structures, landforms, etc.) is that they'll have a perfect safety record until they don't. "No one has died or been seriously injured on X in 20 years. I mean sure, studies suggest that is entirely due to luck and low volume use, but who're you going to trust? Independent safety experts, or us, the company that has a lot of money invested in this?" Even if something does happen, sometimes it can be hushed up, and names will change (like in the case of this video's company) so people won't associate it with past problems.

absurd that they continued the tour out over the lake whilst the weather was already changing due to a storm coming in. Of all people especially a boat captain should know (and know from experience) how fast (the) weather changes in such situations! I also am amazed that the captain did not hand out the life jackets when he still had time to do so and even more I find it hard to understand that it can be so hard to get out of such a boat
