Let's not forget, though FFXIV is one of the most popular MMORPGs on the market right now, it didn't START that way; hell, it's a miracle the gaming populace even gave it a second chance at all is because Square Enix noticed their monumental foul-up and literally killed the game off to start it over from scratch. That aside, Guild Wars 2 is one of NCSoft's - ArenaNet's parent company - most popular & profitable IPs right now seeing some of the highest player counts; creating direct competition with themself would be the equivalent of emptying an AK clip on their foot. Keeping in mind the servers for Guild Wars are still live and people still play that, too, running a hypothetical GW3 alongside GW2 COULD be feasible, but it'd take a TON of careful planning and resource management, not to mention funds, to make it happen. The way I see it, it's possible that these concerns may have been brought up in that meeting: to see if it WAS possible with their current climate. as someone who has played no mans sky since near launch i encourage people to buy it now becuase for the asking price u get easily over 100+ hours out of this game.Also did i mention u can get your own starfleet and customize your main starship and get S rank ships to send on voyages.Also full crossplay with every platform and yes u can get your own AI robot to mine and help u on planets no matter where u ar on that world.Also u can fly on creatures EDIT: in no mans sky there 0 microtransactions everything is earnable ingame VIA an easy challenge and the only thing u can miss is expeditions wich have there own cosmetics tied to them
In other sad news: The Crew has finally been taken behind the shed by Ubisoft. Another one for always online, live service graveyard. But if you're looking to make Ubisoft notice about how they fucked up, you can still be part of Ross Scott's campaign to stop the killing of games. It may be too late to rescue The Crew but that doesn't mean other games destined to die have to share the same fate.

You guys should check back in with what Helldivers 2 has been doing lately, unannounced content being added to the game including new enemy types being introduced by trickling it in to select games before introducing it on a wider basis and acknowledging the new content. GW2 already has so many problems since the SOTO Ex-pack released, the main features of the Ex-pack is still coming out and the story isn't finished at all (not very good either)... I know the game is 10+ years old now and has a lot of bloated content- I just really don't think GW3 is a good idea without officially putting GW2 on life support; but GW3 isn't a good idea in general and makes no sense. Unless the Dev's wanted to move to a completely new API and game Engine (DX9 is dead I believe and now GW2 is on DX12), I just HATE the idea of GW3 unless it is not a MMO type game.

34:18 there are no microtransactions in No Man's Sky, and no paid DLC, either. The only revenue stream Hello Games has to rely on is new sales of the game itself. That's frankly a big part of why they actually deserve their comeback in my opinion, even if you do start feeling a little guilty when you've gotten your third major free update in a year that any other studio would charge $25 for and fill with microtransactions. Like, seriously Hello Games, you've redeemed yourselves. You can charge $5 for an update that completely overhauls an entire section of the game AND adds a bunch of new content or whatever. It's okay.
The greatest thing that could happen to the gaming world would be for the top 5-6 companies to go out of business or go bankrupt! There would be an adjustment period, things would be slow for a couple years, but then the industry would explode with much better games.
If these studios who were not struggling wouldn't have sold out to mega corporations, the gaming industry would not be fucked. Many good studios like Blizzard and Bioware were not struggling when they sold. They wanted that cash and sold their soul.

these companies collapsing from their bad practices is not a bad thing. I feel bad for the workers, but honestly this is how it's supposed to happen. The consumers are still there. Break these big companies up and there resources should go to smaller better run companies seeking to consume the same market shares. Any action to stop that from happening will prop up the sick system for AAA games we have today. Get the leaches out of this industry and they'll go look for another market to unhealthily extract capital.

Microsoft couldn't buy up all these companies if they did though. It is weird to hear someone who's company is on the top list of capitalistic companies complaining about capitalism, his job depends on that. Valve is basically earning top bucks from Steam, they really don't even have to make games anymore. my man has never herd of "Elsewords" which is a multiverse. the entire point of the SSKTJL was to setup a multiverse story to sell you DLC's. in the comics elseworlds is cool and badass, in the game its dogshit.
Let me tell you a bit about layoffs. Yes, part of it is covid overhiring and mismanagement. But another huge part is industry bloat. You have BG3, biggest game of all time developed by a studio of 550 in 6 years. You have Helldivers from a studio of 200. You have Project Eve that just released an amazing demo from a studio of 250. Then you getsmaller games like Pal World or Valheim from studios between 3 and 50 people. Andthen on the other hand you have Suicide Squad and Skull and Bones. Both took 2x time and 10x money to make, yet are far less. Forget even gameplay quality - if you just take the CONTENT alone, they are several times smaller than any of the above. And next you have Blizzard who cancels Story Missions because they can't possibly deveop a PATCH without 800 fulltime employees. CDPR is talking about increasing the team ofa full-production brand new game to 400, but Blizzard wants 800 for a patch and Rocksteady needs 500 people for 10 years to make barebones Suicide Squad. You see a little problem here? The truth is that there are currently the tools to make videogames that are 5-10 times better than in early 200's. From 3d modelling software to programmer IDE's, you can now output several times more product than you used to. And don't even mention UE5 which has become a default. Used to be you needed 100-200 fulltime devs just to keep your homebrew engine up to date. Not anymore. Let's face it. AAA studios are overbloated. They lack talent and they forgot how to work. If you take all the content of Suicide Squad including code and divide it by 10 years and 500 devs - you will find that on average they output 2 textures and 50 lines of code per month. Now, I'm sure some of them work way more. But far from all of them. And at that point, don't you think they are kind of wrongly employed? 😮 It is true that management is often a big problem. But the truth is that investors aren't stupid either. They look at Skull and Bones and they look at Elden Ring or BG2. They look at indie games. And even at their own games from 2010. And they realize that despite all the tools it used to take less time and money to output far superior performing product. And they realize that some studios are still doing that right now, just not their studios.
One of the reasons I started playing City of Heroes again under Homecoming and am looking at Brighter Shores when it comes out is the simple fact that they are free of the need to satisfy the need to constant growing revenue and are made or maintained by ppl who simply want to make enjoyable games.
I'm in the minority. I actually like SSKTJL and the new Joker 😂 he actually tells you lore in game if you go to certain locations like "The Batman Experience".
I sincerely hope GW3 goes back to their roots, smaller stories at least initially, more grounded in reality and with fleshed out characters. GW2 is a great game, but the story went full-retard soon after Living World became a thing. I wish them only the best!

The Phil Spencer thing does make sense and sometimes layoffs are inevitable. I would start with whoever in my executive team thought it was a good idea to over hire developers and designers. After all, one C-Suite exec is worth 20-40 of their staff (if not more). And the staff are the ones who actually produce the product.
Its so sad the amount of games developed principally for MTX. It's gotten to the point where games like ANTHEM are completely forgotten about and the industry has not learned, live service AAA is not it.

In other sad news: The Crew has finally been taken behind the shed by Ubisoft. Another one for always online, live service graveyard. But if you're looking to make Ubisoft notice about how they fucked up, you can still be part of Ross Scott's campaign to stop the killing of games. You guys should check back in with what Helldivers 2 has been doing lately, unannounced content being added to the game including new enemy types being introduced by trickling it in to select games before introducing it on a wider basis and acknowledging the new content. Really cool way of putting out new content and worth coverage.

GW2 already has so many problems since the SOTO Ex-pack released, the main features of the Ex-pack is still coming out and the story isn't finished at all (not very good either)... I know the game is 10+ years old now and has a lot of bloated content- I just really don't think GW3 is a good idea without officially putting GW2 on life support; but GW3 isn't a good idea in general and makes no sense. Unless the Dev's wanted to move to a completely new API and game Engine (DX9 is dead I believe and now GW2 is on DX12), I just HATE the idea of GW3 unless it is not a MMO type game.

Anet have been hiring for an MMORPG based on an online fantasy IP since 2022. It's probably still years out but seems like they've at least been considering it for a while now. Leaking it this early though has got to suck for arenanet since if they confirmed it it'd tank their money maker.

34:18 there are no microtransactions in No Man's Sky, and no paid DLC, either. The only revenue stream Hello Games has to rely on is new sales of the game itself. That's frankly a big part of why they actually deserve their comeback in my opinion, even if you do start feeling a little guilty when you've gotten your third major free update in a year that any other studio would charge $25 for and fill with microtransactions. Like, seriously Hello Games, you've redeemed yourselves. You can charge $5 for an update that completely overhauls an entire section of the game AND adds a bunch of new content or whatever. It's okay.
GW1 was a fantastic game highly recommend it and it'd be cool to see an oldschool review of it. Game holds up really well even to this day.
The greatest thing that could happen to the gaming world would be for the top 5-6 companies to go out of business or go bankrupt!
There would be an adjustment period, things would be slow for a couple years, but then the industry would explode with much better games.

If these studios who were not struggling wouldn't have sold out to mega corporations, the gaming industry would not be fucked. Many good studios like Blizzard and Bioware were not struggling when they sold. They wanted that cash and sold their soul.

It always makes me happy to see the love GW2 gets, the depth of its influence is surprisingly big given its 'fashion', mounts, voice acting and world v world game modes. Far from perfect but nice to see this story make the show :)
these companies collapsing from their bad practices is not a bad thing. I feel bad for the workers, but honestly this is how it's supposed to happen. The consumers are still there. Break these big companies up and there resources should go to smaller better run companies seeking to consume the same market shares. Any action to stop that from happening will prop up the sick system for AAA games we have today. Get the leaches out of this industry and they'll go look for another market to unhealthily extract capital.

Valve is basically earning top bucks from Steam, they really don't even have to make games anymore. Microsoft is trying something similar with X-box Live but it isn't working so well as they hoped it would.

Let me tell you a bit about layoffs.
Yes, part of it is covid overhiring and mismanagement. But another huge part is industry bloat.
You have BG3, biggest game of all time developed by a studio of 550 in 6 years.
You have Helldivers from a studio of 200.
You have Project Eve that just released an amazing demo from a studio of 250.
Then you getsmaller games like Pal World or Valheim from studios between 3 and 50 people.
Andthen on the other hand you have Suicide Squad and Skull and Bones. Both took 2x time and 10x money to make, yet are far less. Forget even gameplay quality - if you just take the CONTENT alone, they are several times smaller than any of the above.
And next you have Blizzard who cancels Story Missions because they can't possibly deveop a PATCH without 800 fulltime employees.
CDPR is talking about increasing the team ofa full-production brand new game to 400, but Blizzard wants 800 for a patch and Rocksteady needs 500 people for 10 years to make barebones Suicide Squad.
You see a little problem here?
The truth is that there are currently the tools to make videogames that are 5-10 times better than in early 200's. From 3d modelling software to programmer IDE's, you can now output several times more product than you used to. And don't even mention UE5 which has become a default. Used to be you needed 100-200 fulltime devs just to keep your homebrew engine up to date. Not anymore.
Let's face it. AAA studios are overbloated. They lack talent and they forgot how to work. If you take all the content of Suicide Squad including code and divide it by 10 years and 500 devs - you will find that on average they output 2 textures and 50 lines of code per month. Now, I'm sure some of them work way more. But far from all of them.
And at that point, don't you think they are kind of wrongly employed? 😮
It is true that management is often a big problem. But the truth is that investors aren't stupid either. They look at Skull and Bones and they look at Elden Ring or BG2. They look at indie games. And even at their own games from 2010. And they realize that despite all the tools it used to take less time and money to output far superior performing product. And they realize that some studios are still doing that right now, just not their studios.

One of the reasons I started playing City of Heroes again under Homecoming and am looking at Brighter Shores when it comes out is the simple fact that they are free of the need to satisfy the need to constant growing revenue and are made or maintained by ppl who simply want to make enjoyable games.

The Phil Spencer thing does make sense and sometimes layoffs are inevitable. I would start with whoever in my executive team thought it was a good idea to over hire developers and designers. After all, one C-Suite exec is worth 20-40 of their staff (if not more). And the staff are the ones who actually produce the product.
