  • More common mistakes cat parents make are using scented (and possibly toxic) cleaning products to wash their cat's dishes, bowls and litter boxes. Stay away from bleach and vinegar on the litter boxes and just use warm water.

@@hopefulpellinore5490 If you use ceramic, or glass food dishes, all you ever need is something like Dawn dish soap. Dawn is used to clean birds and other wildlife after those nasty oil tanker spills. It is a great degreaser and leaves no residue with a good rinse. As for clothing, you never need more than two tablespoons of detergent, especially the HE stuff. NEVER use liquid fabric softener in the wash. It leave nasty goo inside the washer, between the tub and case, where the water drains out. I went off topic there a bit.

I try to use unscented everything. Two things for the litter box that work really well with no scent. I spray the box with hydrogen peroxide (just the regular kind) and then wipe it dry with paper towels. Easy, fast and zero smell. Peroxide is a great disinfectant. Every 6-8 weeks, I take a bar of plain beeswax (Amazon) and rub all over the cat pan inside bottom and up a couple of inches on the sides. This helps the litter not stick to it.

You're basically using water this way. The alkaline and acid equals each other out and the solution become pH neutral and has no cleaning powers. I'm not telling you to stop just letting you know that the solution has no cleaning power. The vinegar can remove limescale on it's own. You can dilute it with water and use a drop or two of scentless dish soap and you have a cleaning solution for everyday cleaning. If smell is a trigger for your COPD look into scentless cleaning supplies.

So my cat who is a male and a cat who is a female. I know that my cat had problems with dominant male cats but will there be problems with different genders? But i also want to know how my cat will feel, i don't want him to feel left out. Both of them will stay inside because i don't want them to have accidents. This may sound like torture to some of you. But i just want them to have a long, healty an happy life.

I want to add for anyone who, like me, ended up bleaching out your cats litterbox because it smelled so bad: if your cats litterbox itself smells like urine even with clean litter, theyre probably peeing on the sides of the box! The solution is not to bleach the box - find out WHY they are doing that. For me, though the litterbox was an XL, it was too small for my cat (he is huge). I ended up getting an open top multi-cat litterbox and I have never had a problem with urine smell since (plus it has little bins for the scooper! score!)

From another vet about cleaning litter pans: I don't object to using dilute bleach, but rinse thoroughly with lots of warm water. If the plastic is scratched replace the litter box. Pay attention to Jackson and do not put a cover or lid over the litter box. And remember that cats never do anything without a reason. If there is what seems to be spiteful behaviour about the use of the box you must dig to uncover the reason. Trust me I'm a (cat) doctor. Fifty years in practice has taught me a lot, and cats are never spiteful. It could be pain, accessibility, dirty litter, not enough litter pans, ambush by a dog or another cat, litter not absorbent enough as older cats start to produce larger volumes of urine, (if your cat still poops in the box but pees somewhere with a more absorbent substrate) Would you want to get your feet wet every time you had to pee? There's more. Didn't intend to write a book. Just listen to Jackson. He gets it. (Bleach is for infectious disease situations. Otherwise skip the strong deodorising chemicals)
and whatever you use rinse well. And if your cat's pee smells excessively either there could be a bladder infection or you aren't scooping often enough.

I use the liquid for Bokashi composting, a combination of different lactic acid bacteria in water and some molasses (sugar as 'bacteria feed').
It may sound disgusting, but I haven't used any water in four years, but the lactic acid bacteria eats the bacteria that makes urine (any kind) stink. But it doesn't kill the normal SMELL of the urine, only bacteria.
I empty the litterbox, pour some Bokashi liquid, and use paper towels to clean the whole inside, then I repeat it.
I also use a little of the Bokashi bran (bran, fermented with Bokashi bacteria) in the sand as well.
My cat used to do her business just outside of the box if she already had been in the box two or three times. I tried different sorts of litter, different qualities; sands, fine or coarse, 'dustfree', and paper pellets, wood pellets, you name it. She had no problems to go in there the first or second time, even when I had used Jodopax (Iodine concentrate you dilute with A LOT of water, for cleaning wounds to disinfect barns and stalls), it clearly was the smell of the old urine she didn't like.
The only smell that I can sense is from the Bokashi liquid, but that doesn't seem to worry her at all. Most of it wear out after a few hours.
The bacteria in bran within the sand start to act immediately, and not even my friend, who is HYPER sensitive to smells, can sense any smell of litterbox (sour cat urine).
I don't empty the box and clean all of it more often than once every to every second month, I take some of the liquid on a piece of paper towel and clean the spots where it has been urine, sprinkle a pinch of the bran over it, and when necessary I fill up with more sand.
The cat obviously appreciates it, she always uses her box now. Perhaps she recognizes the Bokashi products as natural, no chemicals? I don't know, but if she is happy with it, I'm happy.
(Of course I don't use chemically scented litter. Never done.)
Maybe worth a try, if you have a cat acting like mine? I mean, if it doesn't work, it doesn't, and you can use the products in the garden or plants, or give or sell it to someone else (remember it is an expiration date!). If it works, that's great!🤷
Cats have their own ideas and preferences, as we now 😂

I'm always saying this about cat boxes. I see people talking about how fresh they get their cat boxes and I'm like "you know they are gonna pee and poop on it right? It can't get any dirtier or cleaner than that and that's where it should be." Now I do wipe up around it, the outside of it, and the edges of the pan above the litter just to keep buildup at bay for what could get on their fur or paws and around the house but I never ever clean the bottom of the pan where the litter is. The litter already does a great job. There's no buildup or anything stuck to the bottom cause I scoop and put new litter regularly. The controversial thing I do is I don't ever dump out the litter and fully replace it. I add a bit of new litter every time I scoop it and it just always stays nice 🤷‍♀️
I get that there's a lot of things we clean to perfection that are meant to get dirty right after but theres benefits to that. I don't think it makes sense to wash the inside of a cat poo pan.

The most scent protection you should have for the litter box are the types of litter that absorb the salts in urine and allow the liquid to pass through to a pad below. Letting the salts sit with urea forms ammonia over time, which is bad for the cat's respiratory system. Nothing more scent-affecting than that. Washing dishes and water bowls should be only dish soap, maybe vinegar if extra disinfection is needed during cold and flu season. If anyone in the home is sick, then go ahead and after scrubbing the dishes, with or without soap, let them soak in a tub of water with a little bleach for 10 minutes. Then use gloves to pull the plug and wash them in soap and rinse as usual. You can do that for everyone's dishes, no need to wash the cat's dishes separately. Their dishes should be washed every day at minimum, if not after each meal. And use scent free dish soap!

Our cat had neurological issues suddenly unable to walk right and falling over. We took her to the vet. He did blood work and it was fine. He then mentioned if we used fabreese or Lysol spray and it hit me like a ton of bricks. Thank goodness he caught it in time and very expensive vet bill and treatment. But we were so grateful. Oh dear, I feel awful. I've always been super careful to only use hot water to clean my cats dishes & feeding spoons, surfaces. I'm careful to use clean dishes & pick up their previous meal dishes & old food after a couple hours. I use hot water only so there's no left on soaps or other cleaning junk. So I go through several bowls a day, well I have 12 cats & feed them 3 times a day. It's a labor of love to wash their dishes as food sitting out too long is filled with bacteria. Cats have a lot of potential problems we can't control so I like to do all I can prevent illness. But... surprise, I realize I'm not perfect😅 I do use dilute vinegar on the floors because their, sometimes, paw prints, leave a poopy mess. But, you know, it never entered my mind that the litter boxes are scent shakers. 😂I feel so bad. I did use dilute bleach for awhile bcuz I thought they needed to be disinfected but was worried about the chemicals so changed to dilute vinegar. I didn't think the vinegar was so bad. I don't even wash their blankets unless they're soiled as I was want to keep the kitty smells on their blankets, so I put them in the dryer to keep the kitty hair collection to a minimum. Thanks Jackson for your fun, informative videos to keep us on our toes.😊

Not to mention the problems of bleach interacting with ammonia from urine…..if you don’t know what the result is, you shouldn’t have bleach in your house. I remember my chemistry professor from way back telling us bleach should never have been put in the hands of the general populace. There are other, safer cleaners for every application you would use bleach for that won’t run the risk of killing everyone in your home.

Look my cat can get over me cleaning his extremely strong scent off his box every now and again. I used a breeze litter box won’t continue because he wouldn’t poop in it and his piss wouldn’t get soaked into a litter that would prevent it smelling instead it was a unscented pad that didn’t even remotely trap the smell.. I have asthma that strong of ammonia isn’t good for either of us (before anyone says there’s a problem with him there’s not he just drinks a lot of water because he watches our dog drink a lot.. and he’d only piss in that box so there was no changing the pad enough).
I’m switching to using his secondary regular box full time with pine pellets (that I’m going to crush up before using because he’s going to eat the pellets instead of using it.. which is also something I learned using breeze)

Only issues I've ever had was the box I had before my current was garbage- (it was double walled and the only option. My cats got litter EVERYWHERE I have a high walls one like I used to and it's much better now) and for a short while I struggled to keep a good cleaning schedule and my one cat made her protest on my damn shoes 🗿 that was not fun to clean and I have a scent thing there to deter her from going in that area again

So I gave in kept the sink trickling with water on. May not be cool to keep it on but it’s the only way he’ll drink water. But recently he’s been just staring at the water not drinking it, odd thing. I found he wanted me to wash the bottom of sink! Even though it’s clean there must be a scent that he doesn’t like so I used a baby wipe and rinsed it in really hot water and wiped it down with paper towels and then rinsed it twice. That was his problem! It must’ve been not clean enough and stinky to his sensitive nose. I have constant migraines and even I couldn’t smell it, so it must’ve been bad smell! I’ll have to keep washing it more often. Being his behavior has been odd.

I put a piece of garlic on the table too keep ants away but it also kept my cat away from her food. Even strong food smells can bother your cat. Don't stop eating them but make sure too take the smell away with mild soap and water and then wash again with vinegar and water. I'm talking about your counters and sinks. When I have to clean cat stuff with toxic or acidic stuff, I make sure to clean that off as well. When we got our dishwasher, our cat stopped eating. So we rinse the bowls after washing them in the dishwasher with warm water. If you can feel a sort of slimy cover under the water, something is there, that shouldn't be. Same goes for the litterbox. I clean it with vinegar now and then but make sure to rinse it off shortly after. I used to use a scent-free cleaner (which was the only one she accepted so far besides vinegar essence) but it seems not to be available for a longer period. When I use vinegar, I use a vinegar essence with lots and lots of water. Also I only use the vinegar essence solution on heavily dirty parts of the litterbox (which are usually only at the bottom of the box), so there should always be some scent left. So far she didn't do her business anywhere else, except the few times she didn't make it in time.

I have to make sure it’s completely dry before I let her near it. I have no idea what this is about but she has always had it since she was a kitten. If I clean counter tops, I have to wipe something on the floor so she won’t jump on the counters because of the bleach. I try to minimize my use of it because of her. But it’s crazy. I have had many cats in my live and have never had a cat that went nuts over bleach of all things. Has anyone else ever heard of this or had an experience like this? She’s always been healthy so no issues there.

I have a way of cleaning the litter boxes that helps save money, and keeps me from having to completely change it often. I don't use clumping litter, I hate it. So what I noticed was that their pee sinks to the bottom of their litter box. So I'll scoop, and sift out all the poop with the slotted litter box scoop, and then move the top layer of litter over so I can see the bottom, then I take a solid scoop and scoop out all the pee soaked litter. You can see where the pee is because the litter is a darker color from being wet. After that I sprinkle a baking soda based deodorizer in and mix it up, and whatever amount of litter I scooped out, I'll pour the same amount of new litter in. My cats seem to be ok with it, they still use their litter box.
