- Electricity is like magic! Inserting a plug into a socket brings all our appliances to life. Be it TV, fridge, microwave, or even a phone charger! In this video you’ll learn how exactly a plug connects an appliance to a socket.
Have you ever noticed that some appliances have plugs with 3 pins while others have plugs with 2 pins? Why is that so? To understand that we first need to understand what it is that the 3 pin plug actually does. The function of the 3rd pin is to provide earthing to the appliance in case of any malfunctions that can cause electric shocks. Learn more about earthing in this video and understand how it is done in our houses.
But why do some appliances like TVs or mobile chargers have only 2 pin plugs? Do they not require earthing? Tune in to the latest installment of the Now We Know series to find out.

Its longer than the other two pins because when you insert the plug, the earth pin will first come in contact with the power supply before the other two(live and neutral) so that any unwanted charges which may be in the circuit will be removed(grounded) before the other two pins go inside the terminals.
Hope it's right 😀
3rd pin is thicker so that the user doesn't get confused that which pin to go to which socket. And it is longer to make sure it should be the first to go to the socket or connect and the last to leave the socket or disconnect to prevent fault current.
I learnt this from Byju's only long back in Physics by Aanand Srinivas sir!!

1. It is thicker beacuse a large cross sectional area as compared to other pins makes its resistance lower than other pins so that in case of any short circuit, the excess current flows through the earth pin.
2. It is made longer so that it gets connected to the earth terminal earlier than the live and neutral pins. This ensures the safety of the user.
3. Earth wire is connected to the metallic case of an electrical appliance to protect from electric shock by transferring excess amount of current to the earth.
The earth pin is long so that the earth connection is made first. This ensures the safety of the user because if the appliance is defective, the fuse will blow off. The earth pin is made thicker so that even by mistake it cannot be inserted into the hole for the live or neutral connection of the socket.
More area of cross section less the resistance
Resistance of the wire directly proportional to 1/area of cross section of wire
That's the reason
East or west Byjus is the best
the answer : the earth pin is made longer and thicker so that no one can get mistaken to insert that into a neutral or live connection in the socket and can easily understand where it should be inserted
thanks for such fascinating facts you send here
Super video thanks sir for strengthing my real life concept.
The third plug is longer and more denser because as you said earlier that the current will follw through an easier path other than the human body if someone touch is it during the phenomenon of faulty current so it actually need a broader pathway So that the current flo smoothly in a larger quantity more efficiently. I don't think it's a perfect answer but that's what I think. Sorry for any mistakes
Thanks byjus , you are great. Can you make a video of electroplating.
Congrats for 2M
amazing video
Now I know everything . Thanks byjus
Thank you for telling
Wonderful explanation ❤
Thank you so much sir...

Nyc explanation as always...❤❤😇😇
The earth pin is made thicker so that even by mistake it cannot be inserted into the hole for the live or neutral connection of the socket.
1st one ....thank you dear teacher
Thank you byjus for explaining us about everything ☺️

So that in case of damage current can flow more as resistance will be Low R universely proportional to Cross sectional area
Amazing Explanation
The 3rd pin is longer so that it gets connected to the circuit earlier than the other pins to avoid any chance of leakage.
It is thick to avoid misplacement as accidentally if all the pins had been of same size anyone could insert a wrong pin to the earth wire socket so to avoid such incidents that pin has been made thicker than the other pins.
बहुत सुंदर
Amazing video sir , very helpful for class10
Answering to the above question:-
IT'S LONGER THAN THE OTHER TWO PINS AND THICKER BECAUSE, WHEN YOU INSERT THE PLUG, THE EARTH PIN'LL FIRST COME INTO CONTACT WITH THR POWER SUPLLY BEFORE THE OTHER TWOS(LIVE OR NEUTRAL) SO THAT ANY UNWANTED CHARGES WHICH MAY BE IN THE CIRCUIT WILL BE REMOVED(GROUNDED) BEFORE THE OTHER TWO PINS UNDERGOES INSIDE THE TERMINALS
Thank you sir
Hi sir very nice teachear
Thank u sir for gave that information.
Thankuuu sooo much sir for this super amazing explanation ❤
Maybe the third pin is longer than the other two pins because when we insert the plug, the earth pin will first come in contact with the power supply before the other two(live and neutral) so that any unwanted charges which may be in the circuit will be removed(grounded) before the other two pins go inside the terminals.
Wowww Thank you for this 😄👍🔥
The answer to the question is
The earth pin is made thicker so that even by mistake it cannot be inserted into the hole for the live or neutral connection of the socket.
As cross sectional area of earth wire is greater, so it will provide lesser resistance. Am I right
Thanks
Because more current get out from metallic casing
Most of 3 pin plugs are packed so when the 3rd pin goes in its shoket then holes of live and neutral opens I think that's why the 3rd pin is longer. Please tell me I am right or wrong @Byjus
It is made thick to avoid inserting it into the live wire socket by mistake. Also, it is made long to
Its longer than the other two pins because when you insert the plug, the earth pin will first come in contact with the power supply before the other two(live and neutral) so that any unwanted charges which may be in the circuit will be removed(grounded) before the other two pins go inside the terminals.
Thank you ☺️
Is the direction of current always remain same ie from live wire to neutral wire or flip at the rate of 50hz
The third pin may be intended to be thiker than the other two pins so as to distinguish it from others.
To come in contact first rather than the live and neutral wire
its thick so it has big surface area for current to flow
its long so that it gets connected to the appliance first
The third pin is longer and thicker because this ensures the safety of the user because if the appliance is defective, the fuse will blow off. The earth pin is made thicker so that even by mistake it cannot be inserted into the hole for the live or neutral connection of the socket.
Cause it would be holding much more electricity
It's just my guees👍
Because amount of current flowing through a medium is directly proportional to its length and cross sectional area. More the length more the current, more the cs area more the current and vice versa.
So sir why doesn't we get shock when we wear sleepers
Sleepers are not at 0 volt potential?
Or bcz of sleepers the current is not able to go into aur body
The earth pin is longer because current flow is fast to the earth wire.
3rd pin is large than other two pins because when we plug in the wire 3rd pin is connect first so that if fault current goes before
Bacause the thicker pin had connected to the earth wiring so the greater is goes to thicker pin
Ok sir
the third pin is longer and thicker for reducing resistance.
Its longer than the other two pins because when we insert the plug the earth pin comes first in contact with power supply. This ensures that we connect earth first which increases our safety
It is made under the assumption that we as human beings tend to make mistakes. By chance if we connect the earth pin to the wrong socket that would be dangerous . So it is thicker and longer so that even by mistake we cannot enter into wrong socket.
The third pin is longer because on inserting it will remove the unwanted circuit to the earth. It is thicker because even by mistake it can't be inserted into the other two holes .
The third pin is also support to hold the switch board. Am I right😀
The third pin can be longer bcz 🤔🤔
Because this pin is going much far then the other three pins
Wow
