"Officially, there never was a 'clone rebellion' on Kamino. Unofficially, approximately twenty years after we were created, a special detachment of the Imperial 501st Legion was dispatched to Kamino, with orders to eradicate an army of clones that had been bred to take arms against the Empire."

Question: Why did the Emperor get rid of the clone army?
Answer: "After the Kamino uprising, the Emperor decided that an army of genetically identical soldiers was too susceptible to corruption. Future troopers would be cloned from a variety of templates. Though the 501st itself remained pure, the rest of the Imperial Army gradually became more and more diverse. We never really got used to the new guys." -anonymous 501st Stormtrooper

First point, with the destruction to the galactic economy not only does the Empire have a surplus of available volunteers, it also has a surplus of otherwise unemployed citizens. The Roman Empire understood idle hands create dangerous mutineers. This is why they both increased the size of their legions and assigned those legions to construct infrastructure like roads, cities, and ports.
Second, the rapid aging of the clones created a significant issue once the war was over. A clone was perfect for a five to ten year war, but rapidly aging soldiers are counter productive in peacetime. A military wants to invest two years training a soldier so they get 20+ years of service out of them if they go career. They don’t want to invest ten years to get ten years of service.

  • @fantango8012

Coming into this video I was skeptical, but you absolutely nailed your explanation 👏

  • @moony2703
    @moony2703 3 года назад +2

This could also explain another reason why there was so few clones made in comparison to how big the Galaxy was. The clones were there to wipe out the Jedi Order, end of story. As elite forces what clones were available would go to the Jedi while the rest of the army got filled out by Natborns.
So at the end of the day the Republic could have essentially already had _two_ armies and given how the army was made up of forces from so many planets and all the turmoil nobody would have really noticed.
Also I can just picture the remaining Jedi and Vader turning around and realising that while they were busy fighting a war and out in the Outter Rim, Sidious has been amassing the Imperial Empire behind them in all but name.
So if anything Sidious would have _wanted_ the number of Clones to stay small. Enough to wipe out the Jedi, and elite enough to make them worth the continued investment, but _not_ enough to discourage Natborns joining. Also given there was likely a lot of people who _wanted_ to be able to join the army, this could have just killed two birds with one stone.

I'd point out another issue that goes into that expense/return problem. If someone in, say, the US Army started at 18 and went full career (like a Clone trooper) he would retire at 60...42 years. The double aging clones may serve farther into their old age but you still get 25 years of useful service at best...and as you said you have to spend about 10 years to train them. 35 years expense for 25 years of usefulness vs a few months of training for 42 years usefulness. REX IS A RARITY SO DON'T SAY IT!

Its worth remembering the animosity that the republic citizens had developed toward the GAR - they had no emotional connection to it: their sons had not died in battle, there were no folded flags on family shrines. The only connection the general population had to the GAR was the endless taxation levied to fund the war. Loyalty to the Empire could be enhanced if the general population had links through familial loss rather than economic deprivation. Animosity toward the GAR and the Jedi was a sentiment that Palpatine used to good effect - and visible in several episodes (e.g. Teckla Minnau's description of her village, a bar keepers response to the Jedi when they went looking for information on the lower levels).

Legends showed that there were in between stages of the Empire being weaned off of clones and depending on birth born humans. The in between stages were cheaper clones of different people from different cloning centers. Remaining Fett Clones were consolidated to Vader's Fist.
By the time of the original trilogy, most of the stormies were normies, but I believe Vader's Fist was still largely Fett Clones, and one of the earlier Legends books has Luke discover that there were a battalion of stormies that were clones. He tried to use the force to detect them and found it odd because they were all of the same person.

Interesting thing about conscription and volunteer is in the military you have good soldiers and bad soldiers, the very individual has so many variables that while 1 might relectantly accept blood and gore as prices of war another might turn into a mass murder because they enjoy blood and gore. With clones they have the same mentality, genetic predisposition to think the same way. Clones who defected done so because they was always genetically predisposed to feel like that. They chose to leave or stay, something the clankers didn't as the battle went on they developed personalities and the opposite happened to the clones. They lost humanity as many brothers fell, feeling hopeless and Captain Rex even developed Survivors Guilt by Order 66. Captain Rex could kill his brothers because his template (Jango Fett) became battle harden as he fought as a bounty hunter, there is no right or wrong just people who ended up on the wrong sides of the track. Captain Rex was accepting that he chose the wrong side but felt it was right and prepared to die.. In a way, Captain Rex transitioned from a clone to an original the moment he defied the chip. His chip might have been defective or will power won he chose to fight the effects.
In summary, Conscription vs Clones, Clones are better because the uniformed raised history as Conscription allows to many defects into the ranks

Legends, he would have a great many more reasons to get rid of them; he was preparing for an extragalactic war basically with the vong; as Allen mention, they didn't have the finances to operate the clone troopers, let alone their ships, etc. all while waiting for the vong to come. Also, stormtroopers really get a bad rep in cannon, it's true they're not clone troopers, but they didn't suck first combat scene; we see they dominated the rebels in the Corellian corvette in a hallway with a door as their only avenue of approach, and people say skywalkers own hallways. Try doing it without the force and lightsabers. Also, in the OG Thrawn Trilogy, it clearly shows the empire valued its stormtroopers when they weren't engaging any plot armor they could be more than equal to many of the galaxies militaries, they put down the clone insurgents on Kamino and separatists hold outs, they enslaved dam wookies and took out Jedi though rare. Disney just fucked them over. Other than that, their only awful moment was on Endor with the teddy bears.

I would argue that clone troopers would actually have a lot of transferable skills.
    * If you can fly or maintain fighters, shuttle and frigates, you're already extremely valuable in a galaxy whose society is highly based on interstellar travel.
    * Clones, while not 100% loyal, were far more loyal than the average galactic citizen and used to hard trials and tribulations. This meant that for all intents and purposes, any employer hiring a clone would be guaranteed a reliable, hard worker.
    * The base skillset of clones would be excellent for policing.
Not to mention the level of organizational and leadership skills. Clones knew how to operate and work together in armies numbering in the millions.

8:46 "That didn't have any skills that would be useful in the private sector". They could become Security Guards, or become private investigators or bounty hunters and chase criminals. As for security work though, it may be hard to find security work that is not hard, dangerous, or otherwise in high demand when its cheaper to use droids, which are good enough for most situations. In real life, in war torn parts of the world such as Afghanistan, there is a demand for heavily armed security contractors and private military contractors, with the same thing in the maritime industry for ship security guards.
Also, the Clone Army can be utilized for crime fighting and disaster response, especially on outer rim worlds the the Coruscant underworld, and individual Clones can join sector and planetary law enforcement. I do know that in my own country, the United States of America, it is common for law enforcement officers to be former or reserve military members, and some countries have a gendarmerie (military force for policing civilians) and/or otherwise allow the military to be used to fight crime and terrorism.
Not that I'm saying that the Clone Army was a good idea, from a long-term or moral standpoint.

Could Palpatine use Carbonite Freezing to have the Clones as a backup in case he needed such elite Soldiers again? I mean Carbon freezing was already used in the Clone wars during the Citadel Misson. This way he would still have the best Soldiers in the galaxie ready to use in the fight against the rebels and he didn't need to pay for their food etc. He also woudn't need to pay for new clones if they wouldn't age while being frozen. The easier jobs could still be carried out by "normal" Stormtroopers.

  • @QuintusAntonious
    @QuintusAntonious 3 года назад

One big reason that I think you missed is that by having an army made of citizens, you have leverage you don't have with clones. Clones do not have families or homeworlds; so you can't extort or threaten them. If a clone deserts, you can't threaten their family. If a unit rebels, you can't blow up their homeworld. Likewise, knowing that your family member is serving also diminishes your desire to rise up because that person could easily be the one sent to pacify you, or be killed in retribution. By enlisting citizens, Palpatine gains the ability to rule by fear in a way he simply can't with clones.

I think you missed the two biggest reasons:
First, to sustain a planned economy around the Military Industrial Complex requires a massive amount of employment by both the industries supporting the military and the military itself. Without recruits from the civilian populace, there would be too few jobs under the control of the planned economy to maintain control.
Second, Palpatine was a control freak, and having a large portion of the population in the military and under the regimented lifestyle that is involved would have that portion under control, or at least would have potential problems within be easily identified.
Either way, having a large portion of the military not be from the general population would be a disadvantage for his plans for maintaining control going forward.

A whole army without genetic diversity would be to easy to take out using bioweapons. With the Separatists this wasn't a problem, Dooku would see to it that such research would quickly end, but when the enemy was not under Palpatine's control a weapon like that would definitely be developed. I don't think the orders on the chip were the problem. Even if the existing troops couldn't be updated, new clones could get an updated set of orders. After which it's just a mater of time till the old clones have died in battle, which with the right orders can happen very quickly.

The Kaminoan product does look nice and sleek. But if I were buying a clone army I would rather go to the Dominion and buy their Jem'Hadar with a Vorta as a bonus. It only takes about a week for Jem'Hadar to be fully mature and combat ready.

even though it is not cannon, I like the clone rebellion arc. the imperial 501st was sent to subdue a clone rebellion on Kamino, and Palpatine chose to abandon the fett clone template because it was now susceptible to corruption.

What Paplatine wanted was something like Skynet as him as the Supreme Leader. Machines that carry out their orders with out mercy, fear, nor regret or pain, absolutely doesn't stop till it's target is dead or it is. One destroyed, Two rise in it's place. Only Yuuzhan Vong could be as bold. Clone Wars would have been over with if Separatist or the Republic unleashed unrestrained A.I.

"Officially, there never was a 'Clone Rebellion' on Kamino.
Unofficially, approximately twenty years after we were created, a special detachment of the Imperial 501st Legion was dispatched to Kamino, with orders to eradicate an army of clones that had been breed to take arms against the Empire. Our mission Commander, an expert on the inner workings of Kamino, was a young bounty hunter named Boba Fett.
The bounty hunter left after the battle was over. He said something about tracking down a smuggler on Tatooine.
After the Kamino uprising, the Emperor decided that an army of genetically identical soldiers was to susceptible to corruption; future troopers would be cloned from a variety of templates.
Though the 501st itself remained pure, the rest of the Imperial Army gradually became more and more diverse.
We never really got used to the new guys." 501st Journal - Kamino: Changing of the Guard.

I think you hit the nail on the head for why the clone program was discontinued. Personally, I feel Palpatine wanted to minimize the program, maybe make only a few hundred a year for elite purposes, and have the rest of the military filled by natural born humans. But for the reasons you mentioned, that couldn't happen, especially if the rebellion on Kamino was canon.

If in activating '66, the Clones following orders initially cheering the Rise of the Empire, did have a bit of a personality change, they could easily have been a danger to their leaders. They were clones of Jango, who was as independent as he was tenacious. Jango was ultimately on Dooku's payroll. The Clones were not on any payroll. Eventually, their aggressiveness would override "a good soldier follows orders." Even a minority of those highly trained soldiers... with access to tremendous firepower doubts their purpose, they create a precarious situation. Add to that an army spread across the galaxy,
crewing many of their warships being brothers, well Tarkin and Sheev had reason to quickly find alternatives.
Conscripted Stormies, costing half that of Clones trained from birth, were an appealing to the new order. Army and Navy Troopers likely required even less training and indoctrination than the more elite, incorruptible Stormtroopers. Enormous numbers of occupational forces would be needed to secure former Republic worlds and hold the growing number of falling Separatists holdouts. Sheev and Tarkin couldn't build an army "sufficiently large enough" to be hold the Empire while snuffing out the Separatists and Rebels. Fear, they reasoned, would win entire worlds for them without firing a shot. The rest would fall in line or face eminent destruction or enslavement.

The biggest threat to the empire was a popular uprising. The clones were more than skilled enough to wipe out any force. But the easiest way to prevent the uprising was put everybody in the army in the first place. Then the clones sre not even needed.

As they aged twice as fast as regular humans, their fighting days would be numbered. The Clone Army was good for at most maybe 10 years of heavy fighting then they would have to be retired due to old age. Or more likely sent into battle to die as cannon fodder for the new Imperial Army. They lasted long enough to end the Republic as the Emperor had planned: after that those that survived wouldn't last long enough to be a problem or a burden on the Imperial Veterans Association. Almost perfect plan, except that to make them better fighters than the droid armies, the left too much "human" in them.

Correct me if I'm wrong since I did not watch any of the shows but their accelerated growth rate would eventually lead to an early death right? I mean they didn't mature fast and then hit a normal pace in their aging?

Lack of funds. The empire was basically bankrupt from the start with palps using a huge amount of resources to build two death stars and the exegol fleet. He simply could not afford the clone troopers. If so i think palps would have made the kaminoans work out the next gen of chips better.
