In the name of fairness, we want to be transparent on how we judged each submission and inevitably picked the finalists. We really appreciate the meme animation community and are committed to making the selection process as fair and democratic as possible.
We received over 890 submissions and randomly divided up the total amount of submissions between seven members of the CloudKid team. We made sure to go through every single one and picked those that really connected with us individually to put forward to the final round.
From here, each team member rated a score out of ten for each video based on the following categories: Animation Quality, Creativity/Originality, and Emotional Connection/Story. These scores get averaged out for each category, and each category’s score is weighted equally to give a final score out of 100. The winners are then decided from these scores and approved by Sir Fluff. 😊

Rocky Racoon may be creative to do a backstory, but the characters isnt his in the first place, he uses a characyer from a existing series and its unfair for others who does world building of their characters losing over a helluva boss animation

Just here to add another comment that it's startling how Louxiei's entry did not place. Literally baffling. I agree with many comments that say next time fandom characters should be excluded. Naturally Luna is going to be loved more than someone's OC... and it feels biased, whether that was the intention or not

Is anyone going to talk about Louxie? I'm so disappointed by the judges.
Exactly! It’s disappointing how Louxie wasn’t even mentioned in this video while people with unoriginal animations were ranked highest. I saw so many amazing animations that deserved to be put in but weren’t.

There is bias in a few of these winners. Animation quality and storytelling should sit higher than "oh hey, I know that character". When the runner ups have noticeably better quality animation and storytelling comparatively, that is a problem.

i didn't expect to be in the top ten what 😭😭 literally it was such a blast to work on this and I'm so happy for the winners and runner ups, I've also watched most of the submissions i could find and i must say five places just weren't enough!!!! But I do need to point out that your runner ups should receive the same kind of credits and links as your winners. There is a blatant unfairness between you linking the original videos of the winners and only tagging the runner ups when both parties had their content utilized in this video the same way. Be fair to the runner ups and give them the full credits they deserve.
Can we talk about the fact that animators are getting copyright strikes on their channel for animating this song for the contest??? Something really needs to be done about this
There is nothing wrong with making a fan animation about a show/video game. Some of the best animations I seen were fan animations about a show, but I do have to agree this is a bit biased. Making your own story and characters takes more effort and originality, and I feel like more animators should of got recognized for it.

yeah, and im really surprised louixies didnt even make it into the runner ups when (not to be rude) was quiet a bit better than a decent amount of these (if any of you guys havent seen it i highly recommend it, they have some really neat ocs and the animation is super smooth)

I loved all the animations in this video and I think all the animators are talented, but I still get the thought that this "competition" is not judging based on actual animation quality which is evident by the amount of entries that made it into this list opposed to others that didn't make it which had significantly higher technical achievements. It's demotivating. What's the point in trying to improve so you can get in the next competition if it's just going to be even more less impressive entries that unfairly got in.

i think that if originality was a selling point for the judging and placing of the animators, original stories should've been prioritized over fan content. don't get me wrong, none of the fan animations are bad (although i am not a huge fan of rocky rakoon for a number of reasons), it's just that it takes so much less creative work to tell a story thats already been told. it makes no sense to me how two fandom pieces made it into the top 5.

This was a really interesting contest and I had fun making my animation and watching all the other animations (i made a list of underrated artists, check in the end of my very long comment).
Though, there is one thing I would like to point out gently for the organizers of this contest. There are already a lot of comments pointing that out but I want to give my point of view with other words and give suggestions :
The rating system and the criterias should be reviewed and modified or better specified.
I have things to say about two criterias “Creativity/Originality” and “Emotional Connection/Story” :
First, what exactly is creativity and originality for you ? In the context of the animation meme, I can only speculate by myself “creativity is the skill or ability to produce one's own characters, one's own universe, one’s story, one's own concepts, or one's own animation parts that are all new and adapted to the demands of the situation” (thus the conditions of the competition). If that’s the case, theeen… we have some problems with some submissions and you should be guessing what I'm getting at : fan animations. I'm not saying all fan animation should be “banned” from contests, instead, what “kind” of fan animation should be allowed. I understand that it may seem unclear and it may seem difficult to set the boundaries, but I think this is why you should get better specified criteria. Here, example of mine : “You can do fan animation as long as the main character is your OC and has their own story in an already existing universe (TV shows, video games, anime…). But you can't take an already existing character and just represent an already existing story”. This is a small criteria that will at least value the artists who have made efforts and time in creating their own characters and stories.
Second, for “Emotional Connection/Story”... this is a more personal point of view for me : “Emotional connection” is a completely different criteria from “Story”. “Emotional connection” is far too subjective, whereas “Story” can be rated in a very objective way (well represented ? Has the artist taken risks with symbolisms ? no superfluous shots or images that add nothing to the story ?...) . For emotional connection, if you want to get the best rate possible, you have to pray that your animation will be seen by a nice judge who will like your animation according to his "connection" and taste. Which is already unfair to the original stories and characters compared to the fan animations from super popular tv shows or video games, like “the judge will prefer the fan animation over the original animation because it’s their fav’ tv show or character”. This is for this reason I understand why some comments are saying it’s “rigged”. So yep, “emotional connection” is not the best criteria.
As a suggestion, you should use this criteria for a whole separate category i would call “Fav’ one” (or “Coup de coeur” in french, just meaning you just liked it for whatever reason). This category could be used to valorise any video, even the super underrated ones, regardless of the official criterias (animation quality, creativity and story). So here, you could place the fan animations as you want, it’s just the fav’ one and that doesn't change the actual ranking.
Bref, in conclusion, the criteria “creativity/originality” should be redefined in a better way to valorise original stories over fan animations and “emotional connection” should be separated from “story”.
I don't know if the cloudkid’s staff will read my long comment, but I just hope they’ll read the people’s opinions and try to improve the contest’s conditions next time. But if they don't change anything and will keep those same unclear criterias… oh well, i guess I can make a simple fan animation of a popular TV show or video game instead of spending 1 week into my OC’s design, 1 week into the storyboard and 2 week into animating the whole thing by sacrificing my sleep hours ! :D
(fun fact : i almost choose to make a fan animation of among us, but i ended up choosing my own OCs for the creativity criteria, lol)
Last words : don’t hesitate to check the underrated artists !

Though I do agree with most of the comments. The judging and ranking for some of these animations seems unfair. Perhaps you could rethink your ranking system in the future? ^^;
Ironically everyone only took note of who "shouldn't" have won. Only 1 or 2 people seemed to have mentioned it, but 5th place deserved way more love.

M going to be honest there are some things wrong here: ( I’m gonna get hate)
1. The second place and fourth place winner break the creativity that the judges wanted. Both of the animations seem to based off a show/video game and the story and characters aren’t theirs ( I’ve seen that wolf girl everywhere)
What I think should have happened? If these were REALLY to the judges liking, I think they should be runner ups

I've never felt so disappointed in a contest. Especially for 4th and 2nd place because they weren't really original at all (to me) since they used a character from a popular tv/game series. I think it would be fine if it was their own character with their own story that they made for that tv/game series' universe but it wasn't. I feel there were a couple artists that had more unique storytelling, creativity, and originality that deserved the recognition. Well I think the runner ups were well deserved but 4 & 2 not really smh.
Not to mention that Rocky is a suspected pedophile and a creep.

Fandom OCs I feel are fine but I feel like...its kind of a cope out to do a Fandom Character?? My opinion from the hundreds of videos I’ve seen I think yellow k9/ Riko sakari/ louixie should be in the top. Don’t get me wrong,I love these animations but I don’t believe looped videos without story should win

How did that Loona one get so high when it's just rigging, no creativeness or originality, and no story that's their own at all? At least the Poppy Playtime one had nice frame by frame animation and unique storytelling despite not being their own original story.
I hate to be that guy genuinely but it feels very rigged somehow and not at all fair to the people who put weeks of hard work into actual creative a labor intensive animation and not just rigging a character from a show. (and since someone wants to whine about it, having a character move their hips a bit on a rig is not comparable to actual story telling using frame by frame animation, sorry.)
I don't think only the most popular entries should be counted but some great examples like everyone else is saying are Louixie and Riko's, but also animations like those from Graphlc Glnger, Fyrtrix Tizi, Pepper Conpanna, FazFuri, Cyan .Y, and Rainsryu that were honestly very deserving.
At least if someone sees this comment go check out the animators I listed, they're incredible and deserve more recognition. I was so excited for these results it's such a shame this feels like such a biased and rushed result.
clearly you dont know how hard tweening can be, multiple parts of the hair alone look rigged let alone other parts, stop underminding artists because YOU don't like a certain way animation is done, it still takes a LOT of work to animate not to mention the background, coloring and other small detail that goes into art and animation. This is such a terrible take.
It irks me so hard when assumingly non-artists or at the least non-animators comes in with this stupid frame by frame purist mindset, this is literally JUST as bad as saying "Art isn't REAL art if it isn't realism" and I can tell you right now a lot of the other artists youre bigging up would be super disappointed at your take too.
I don’t have anything to say about your other points but tweened/rigged animation is just as valid as other kinds of animation.
Pretty sure Rocky uses rigged puppets. Nothing wrong with that ofc, it’s used in the industry a lot to keep everything clean and smooth. I think that they do a really good job with their stuff, but I’ve also seen a few entries that were more detailed and had more creative stories. I was keeping an eye on the entries that were pouring in and I saw quite a few that were absolutely incredible. This meme brought a lot of new animators to my attention and I’m happy about that, but it also raised my expectations for the winners so I was a little disappointed with the results.
@@GweenOfTea But I am an artist and an animator.. lol. Have been for 11 years. I don't know why you're hammering on that point when it isn't at all the main point of contention in my original comment, I just mentioned they aren't really on the same level in that particular case. Flicker's is a great example of how rigging is done right with unique scenes and original storytelling.
I'm not affiliated with those animators obviously and if me just mentioning them would be oh so offensive then so be it. Others in the comment section have mentioned how they wish their favorite animator should have won, I only mentioned these animators because they're ones I have found through this competition that I believe deserved more recognition. You're demonizing me for offhandedly mentioning the type of animation and projecting that onto others that I mentioned for completely unrelated reasons. It really is not that deep.

Everyone put so much hard work into their submissions. Loved watching as many as I could over this month and onwards.
I'm happy for those who won, but fan animations should not have been permitted imo.
I think it's unfair for everyone to judge the quality of the entries because at the end of the day, these are individual animators who took time to make something unique and something above their own standards. [Criticism stops being criticism when its unwanted and deconstructive.]
However, it is questionable about how the entries were judged. Of all the original storytelling and visuals in each of the entries- two of the ones that won were fan animations of popular characters with established stories. It feels like there was some biased judging for the animations with already liked characters- which is ultimately unfair for those who've used their own original characters and lore.
I'm unsure on who or how many the judges were for this contest but it feels like there were very few animators actually judging this contest. If so, then it doesn't make sense to host an animation contest when judges can't accurately judge the entries [and do not say the chef's analogy, not everybody is able to judge art in an artist's perspective.]
Maybe for the next contest [whenever that happens] could a rule be added that only original stories by the animators could the used? So that everybody has an equal playing field.
And to clarify: I'm not attacking the two animators for making their entries huggy wuggy and helluvaboss [neither should anyone else] I'm only criticizing how the contest was ran

I feel like they should be remove from their placement and replace, or at least the person who host it does a recount or smth, its ridiculous and hurt
late but the loona one wasn't even really- unique or original, at least not compared to the entires before and after it- Even the poppy playtime had so much more to it originality wise just with how the artist presented each and every scene instead of going with what Sir Fluff had as a platform. At least with the whole chorus part, but even the story itself didn't have much to it other than "holy woman wants to be a furry".
I love the animation on its own but with its placement compared to the runner-ups, you can tell a bias was there- there was no originality and unique-ness to feel a connection to compared to the extremely interesting, original storylines they showed they'd considered.

Regarding all the criticism and comments, i think the best solution for all of this is to divide the contest into 2 categories. Each artists who submits their memes can pick either of the two.
One should be for beginner artist, while the others are for experienced (there should be specific criteria for both so artists can know which one they should choose)
Cause its kinda unbalanced if its all mixed. For example, a hobbyist animator with a cheap software and mouse won't stand a chance to someone who already has a display tablet, toonboom, and 6+ years of animation experience.
Oh that's actually interesting, I think that's a good idea! I different idea that could be used in tandem or on its own would be to have a separate category between fan animation and original characters, because that specific thing seems to be upsetting a lot of people in the comments as well
A hobbyist animator with cheap software and hardware can still make something with the same or higher quality as someone with more years of experience and uses a display tablet and more expensive software. It comes down to skill, talent, and how quickly you can learn.
@@virlkor yeah, that's true. It's not the software, it's how you use it. I still agree that the categories would be a good idea, though, like you could choose an experience level, "beginner" or "advanced" etc
@@virlkor As someone that used to be part of the animation community 10+ years ago and learned how to animate with MS Paint, Windows Movie Maker, and a mouse (and seeing so many other people make incredible stuff with just those two free softwares), I stand by this comment 😂

Hey just wanna say I actually didn’t care about this contest or winning, I just joined because I thought poppy playtime would fit the song and I animate things that are trending, I don’t even make animation memes at all, this was an exception…and honestly I’m also hella surprised why I’m 4th place, I literally saw sooooo many other beautiful entries that deserved to be in my place…but then again, I’m really sorry, I didn’t have any control over their decision..
I feel the way that the credits are given is a bit unfair, why aren't you also linking to the runner ups videos too? Kinda weird just seeing how normally if u used anyones content you would link back to it, but here it's okay not to? Idk I'm disappointed but hoping it was an oversight.

I have never been this disappointed in ages, this so called “contest” makes no sense at all, heck it doesn’t even feel like they review it and just picks the one they think looks cool.
First off putting someone who literally clickbait children with suspicious thumbnails with popular shows, games and characters, IN SECOND PLACE!? Not only that but there is little to no creativity in it, even though it looks good. This just tells me that they haven’t checked on the actual content creators but only on that one animation alone. Making animation memes with characters that already exists is okay, but then they gotta work harder to make it unique to keep up with those who have made unique characters, stories and so on which takes a lot more time to do.
Second being that we don’t get to know how they exactly review these animations and I don’t even think they have a proper system on how they are rating these in the first place. Things like how many fps there are in an animation, light sources etc. Are those who rates these even professionals? The point of art is not to be the best but to be creative and made with hard work (and fun ofc) and that is something that should be looked at while rating these sorts of things.
These are some of my personal thoughts but I will not believe that I am the only one with this opinion.
Edit: Now when I have doubled checked CloudKids comment I find it so weird to see the furry animation in the top 2 when one of the categories is emotional connection. So I suppose most of the jury are just furries then lol (this is a joke, don’t take it seriously)

Furry or not? Loona isn't even owned by them. Rip them out of second place and put Overseer in there. They want some furries, put Overseer's art in there, that animation is phenomenal and it's this contest that allowed me to find them!
