- Heya pals!
Ludum Dare 48 has come and gone, so here's a little video write-up about how I went, and what came out of the weekend. I had a blast trying to make such an ambitious game in such a short amount of time, and made a surprising amount of progress. Follow-up project, here we come! This time I'll really try to keep it under 2 months... But we never know with these things haha.
You can play the LD version of Throneless here: ldjam.com/even...
Beware, it's a little rough!

Later, pals!
Any kind of RPG is so ambitious to get even the core systems built over the course of just one weekend, I'm very impressed
Can you pleeeaase do isometric character tutorial? I love the art of this game
I agree, that would be so helpful!
It's been literally the thing I've been hyped for the most from this channel since the isometric tiles tutorial appetizer, and this Ludum Dare experience is the perfect excuse for a full lesson.
I AGREE WITH THIS STATEMENT! :D
Agreed
The charachters are isometric ?? Seems 2d..
@@jeanbarque9918 2d art laid out to look 3d is called isometric in games
It blows my mind that you (and others of course) can bust out a game prototype in 48 hours. Its easy to get down on yourself for the things that were not perfect about a project, but holy cow: you need to give yourself credit for all the things that went well with the game prototyping! Very inspirational, and I look forward to more details on this project and any other content you share. Keep up the fantastic work pal!
It's easy to forget that everyone is on their own journey and each one starts at different times and moves at a different pace. I compare my work quite harshly against lots of other creators that are excellent at what they do. And even I fail to recognise that they might have a more specialised skillset or have been doing it a lot longer than me.
Lots of excellent pixel artists can't code. Lots of great programmers can't animate. I've put a lot of time and effort into trying to learn and practice the things I do, most people don't have the time or interest to cover that much territory but that shouldn't reflect negatively on them.
At the end of the day, you can't know how long someone has been striving to do what they do, so it's not very useful to compare, but you can always learn from them by watching what they do. Just take it at your pace and enjoy it.
(I realise I was kind of just talking to myself here, I guess I needed to hear it lol)
@@AdamCYounis Your failures are our inspiration.
it was an absolute blast to watch you make this during the jam and i've loved tuning in to watch you continue developing it adam! i've learned so much from your channel and your tutorials
This is great, I've just started making a tactics game myself and it's crazy how far you got in such a short amount of time. Big props my dude
Probably not the first person here to ask for a isometric character tutorial xp
Looks like it's gonna be a great game! Really like the enemy recruiting idea with perma-death
I was there!
Omg its pixel overlord!!!!! I love your videos
I am from the past hi
Great work Adam! Can't wait for the finished version.
I had your stream open for most of the jam. Thanks for helping to keep me sane while I worked on my own entry.
The range of skills and knowlwdge needed for this is enormous, and the fact you can get it done in two days is mind-boggling. I created a tactical RPG, I did everything apart from the assets. It is on Steam now, it is far from perfect and it took me years! :)
I'm absolutely astonished by what you managed to do in 48 hours and i'm hyped to make an isometric game myself. Theres really nothing to critisize on your accomplishment here top performance as far as I can see. Scope management maybe if you're unhappy with what you could deliver but the fact that you delivered what you did in that short amount of time is great. I'm very impressed.
There was a game with this concept of everyone moving at the same time. I remember it from Playstation1. It was called Vandal Heart. It even had a part 2 also on PS1. It had these satisfying blood animations when you kill an enemy. It had a good story too.
This channel needs more subs, love your content man.
This is great and inspiring! I'm just starting to learn some of this stuff and glad you've put the time to present what you've got/see a window into your thoughts.
"Though I never achieved the mark of perfection I had so earnestly sought, I went further in the attempt than if I had never made the attempt at all." -Ben Franklin
Very cool devlog/post mortem :) I love the game, it is very impressive. I also find the idea of an isometric game quite difficult. I hope you'll do more jams in the future!
I just wanted to say thank you! As a pixel art lover and recent starting my pixel arts and game projects, your techniques and point of view on how pixel art works has been a HUGE help and inspiration for myself!
Thank you very much!
Thanks for doing all these videos. Really helps motivate me when I'm just not feeling it while I work on my first game. You always have very useful tips especially with the pixel art. Appreciate what you do man. Keep it up.
It was fascinating watching you build it in realtime. I missed so much of the second day, but it looks amazing! Can't wait to play it on release! ☺️
Once again, u did an amazing job and challenge. It was very interesting (even the dev parts when I'm not in it at all, yet) ans inspiring to see you face "problems" with as much determination. I'm sorry to hear the post ludum dare was tough but you created something only in 48 hours with your own hands and I think that's pretty crazy. I think you should be proud (but that's just one opinion among many). You have done something, that's already so much. Good luck for the future weeks on the game ! =)
the desire to make a tactics rpg is what made me come back to game dev and pixel art
this is me but for a fighting game
Oh yuss this is such a good idea. I feel like the blueprints set out by FFTactics still have so much potential that other tactical rpgs haven't really capitalised on.
this seems like a really cool game! excited to see how it turns out!
That's really neat, good job.
As for feedback, you may need a system for both feedback in game design, art, sound, or whatever else you would want it to have and a separated bug report (in the same form, mind you), with options so that people wouldn't report the same bug in their own words each time. They would check where they found it, and which components may have triggered that bug. Then you could have, of course, something telling you how many people reported that one bug, that other bug, etc.
I don't know how "bug reporting" is handled these days, if there's something that would do that for you, but if you want to build something that could help you in future jams...
Congrats on the submission! We are super excited for a finished version as well :D
This was really impressive! :D I also participated, and came out with my game, "DEEPER" :) I made it in PICO-8, and I'm really proud of it.
I have taught about a game in a similar idea, happy to see you working on something that looks very fun
This helps alot as someone making a turn based game with search functions
Great work. I'm looking forward to play the finished version of Throneless
fun weekend watching you develop this
I really want to create a game like this as I love strategic RPG games like this :D
Wow, well done man. Wish i had skills like that
This was really cool! Sick game. Looking forward to seeing its release!😁
I dropped out of this jam after 24 hours. Good work, it's crazy how much work you can get done in just 2 days.
Crazy when first watched your stream you were working on this.
Really insightful these remarks concerning the quality of ones own entries... I think most of us actually borderline hate some of the details in our own entries; I suppose it's kind of the nature of the compo - it's a really strict timeline and if you participate with the base idea in mind... there is A LOT to do in a short amount of time 🤔 (If you take the rules more leniently you could use quite a few base things from the get go - but to me it takes some of the fun out of it).
Cheers from Naoconhecido, it was a pleasure to follow your progress on Ludum Dare
Sooooooo... not gonna lie, if these characters move a bit more, I would so get this game! The idea of this is absolutely brilliant!! Reminds me a bit of Solstice on NES, vibewise.
Amazing skills man! Seems a interesting game. Graphics are superb.
Man I’m so jealous, I’m a software developer just starting to look into game dev and this is the kind of game I would love to make at some point, but it’s going to take like a year to learn the basics.
That looks good cant wait to see how it turned out. Glad you got so far. I burned out to much on day 2 and only got half my art done and no menus or title
Would love to see how you implemented the tactics style movement with unity's Isometric tilemap!
Same dude I tried doing that earlier and even when consuming all the tutorials I could find on the subject and it was still a nightmare and I got nowhere.
Aw man, here I am trying to make a tactics game for months on and off, and he just up and does it. :P Awesome work man.
Final fantasy tactic! My man, good choice for inspiration.
I find it therapeutic to watch a talented game developer at work :D
That’s so impressive!
i like how they have a defeated state, makes me think of mechanics like, dead bodies dont just despawn but actually clog up the make and add weight to the pathfinding algorithm, especially in choke points lol
That's really cool! The game looks fun by the concept and by what you show there . I will love to play the final version. Also all this in 48h? I cant get my art done in 48h XD. Nice job !
If someone with no experience at all were to want to start somewhere, in learning how to make these types of games, where would you recommend starting?
You are amazing! Great work!
I been making a game for 6 years and this man makes a core engine (and great graphical assets) in 2 days. I need better time management, haha.
This guy is a legend
this might be the thing that gets me motivated to make games again
Oh my fucking hell! You coding too, you sound-producing too.. Damn, all my respect to you
The game looks brilliant and it sucks you couldn't get it to where you wanted in the time but I'm sure the extra 6 weeks will make it even better!
It took me 48 hours to make 1 pixel art character for SRPG engine...
Lies.
It's look like 2.5D game. Good job
I made this same game past year for study, but not isometric. I ran into the same problem of two characters walking to the same tile 🤣 (I was starting in programming)
This year I came back to the project, and could fix it with a simple loopindex calc!
Welcome back ;)
Cool, I always like to watch your tutorials
this is so impressive, I hope I can do something like this in 48 hours one day!
This is really impressive
Amazing video!
So, assuming the post jam version is canceled?
Unfortunate, I am extremely interested in this idea.
hair's lookin fresh
Good job!
Amazing
We need a Unity Isometric Tactics RPG tutorial series!!! ugh. Can't find enough information out there that goes into enough depth. I've tried on different engines and all "content creators" that dive into this, are pretty shallow and lack any real depth in the tutorial.
EDIT: My bad, I saw the source code is up at the ludum dare site. Would love to see a video where you go over in a short recap your thinking and how you designed your implementation, similar in the style of your other great videos.
Looks great! Any chance of a upload of the project or a tutorial on how you did the isometric movement? Been struggling a bit myself with it and would love to get some fresh ideas.
Great accomplishments for only 48 hours :)
This looks rad. I'd play it if you fleshed it out bro
New Subscriber , great content Adam ! easy like.
Looks like your scope was too big for a game with a very small dev window, but glad you're going to commit to completing it afterwards instead of allowing your disappointment to end this game. Good luck on your game!
love these kind of games. sad to see they kind of disappeared with the decline of handheld (not counting switch)
Very cool! Great work on such a short schedule. Are you interested in getting some music done for it?
O baby.
Some video about how to use grids more than simply paint in screen wolud be appreciate =) Make me nervous see a video when you say "easy pathfinding" (and sort of I agree), but I dont find this kind of things in isometric tiles or even in retaangular ones, everibody write their own grid, and very few use Unity Tiles. =) Just a sugestion =)
THIS IS POGGERS
Comment for the algorithm bois
Fantastic!
Id like se you making in Unity some system /game that seems like GRANDIA graphics, with 3D pixels backgrounds and 2D character, a kind of isometric but not isometric, with free 45* camera ! I dont know if you’ll understand me
U a real one
amazing
Thnk u for the vídeo, man!! The game did look pretty good!
Which tool did u use tô make the músic?
when you know you know. When you don't know program, it takes 2 months
How many years programming experience do you have and how many years game development do you have? Sorry if you mentioned it I skimmed here and there.
i really want to make my own tactics game. was a huge fan of fire emblem growing up.
trying to learn to do pixel art and use unity right now. having a hard time getting little 32 32 character sprites that look good.
I have a game in my mind but I don't think it will come out there way I want
Fun fact : celeste and hollow knight are both post game jam games
what's the license of the source?
This Isn't this the basis of sword of canvallaria? (I mean this is a couple of years before the official version of the game)
ive always wanted to learn how to make a tactics game in unity. i wonder where i can learn that.
I was like wait I’ve seen this and then I realised i was in the stream lmao
Hi!
Can you recommend a course (like a Udemi course ) for people who have basic programing skills and are completely new to game dev? Like new in the sense of "so far have not touched Unity or any Game Dev Tool"? I would like to find a code along which really takes me by the hand, step by step, line by line, for a small-ish project.
I am curious if you have the whole stream since I am trying to learn and feels something that I am good at ?
I would say you have something there. Maybe you could explore it and make bigger game from it.
was the programming language you used C #? Amazing joob bro
Wow, I probably can't do this in a month.
would love to see a tutorial on this from start to finish on somewhere like udemy
I have a good question, how to do the same thing but an rpg
of action (without turns) and with a camera that rotates, just like in ragnarok online
Hey Adam would please make a video on how to make weapons using pixel art
Hello, Im attempting to make a tile map in the like of one in the video that shows a dark outline around the tiles but im having trouble.
I gave my tiles a dark outline but it shows the outline of every tile not just the ones on the perimeter or the ones that are on a higher axis.
How did you get the dark outlines to show only on the perimeter and raised tiles?
Is it a shader?
