Trail shoes are following the hybrid model that 'gravel' bikes are in. Like a good gravel bike, some road-to-trail shoes merge the gap between a dedicated road bike and a hardtail mountain bike, so I think the term Gravel Shoe is very fitting.

Love the review! I used this shoe for my 50K a few weeks ago. Got about 35 miles on them leading up to my race. They were perfect for this race. It was a rail trail, so it was mostly flat gravel, packed dirt with very little in the way of technical terrain. Ideal conditions for this shoe. Cheers!

Thanks for the great review! California here. I recently bought a new pair of men's shoes at the Nike store for $41.45 USD, tax included. This shoe seems to suit my slender feet best. They just feel right. Other brands sometimes cause corns on the sides of my feet due to poor fit.

Almost every Nike show you review is a buy. The latest iteration trail shoes (past few years) are horrendous due to the dangerous slippy outsole on them all, when used in damp/wet conditions. This is hardly mentioned. I’m now taking Nike reviews, you post, with a pinch of salt. I know your a bit of a fan not but cmon.

Great review as always. I’ll skip the Peg 4 Trail. Don’t need a “gravel” shoe in my rotation. I did like the Peg 3, but like you I just find I reach for it less and less. The Xodus Ultra is currently at the top of my trail rotation. PWR Trac outsole is excellent. I don’t know why Nike can’t (or won’t?) figure out their traction issues in their trail offerings. More market share for the Sauconys of the world I guess 🤷🏻‍♂️ Speaking of which, look forward to the full review of the Trail Tested companion to this shoe, the Endorphin Edge. At that price, really curious what you have to say…

Pretty much all my running is on rural gravel roads and rail trails. I think this will hit a real sweet spot for me. I don’t need some of the extra lug depth and overlays that heavier trail shoes need but I want more lug and rubber coverage than your basic road shoe. I hate how gravel starts to stick in through exposed midsoles.

I've been stuck with the 3 version because it was literally the last shoe on the shelf that fit my bunion. I'll give them credit, it did help me tremendously from an orthopedic standpoint. But yeah; this is the hottest, dampest, slowest drying line of shoes I've ever worn. If you're wearing wool socks they will both just start absorbing sweat and puddles and the end of a 10miler it starts to feel like you have a kitchen sponge on your foot.

On sand and offroad they are too narrow in the middle, hence they feel unstable and higher stacked than they actually are. Previous version had about the same height but wider, flatter contact area with the ground. Oh but maybe I can use them on road and gravel? -I thought... No, on road you can feel the lugs through the shoe plus the wear is probably not worth it. The only place that these were very comfy were on flat gravel... but I never run on that without taking the road there 😓 Pure gravel shoe, sucked for everything else.

Can someone explain, why no one refers to the laughable durability of outsole from Nike products which wears done completely after 1K Km, meaning 10-12 months usage? You should include as a major criterion the durability of shoe, especially the outsole when we are talking about 120 plus dollars shoes

Hmm... I wonder how it would do in wet and snow... cuse it might make a good shoe for winter road running. When there's a permanent layer of snow covering the road and you just need a bit more traction but most lugs are too much. .. and if they run warm too... that would also be good for winter.. haha. Very interesting...

@@TheGingerRunner I loved the K9 and 10. But I guess lightweight daily trainer options were more limited then. I have an aversion to plated daily trainers and that seems to be where things are going… or they’re all high stack. The “natural” feeling of the Kinvara is appealing. It would be nice if they put in a bouncier foam or something to update it a bit.

  • @cordeiropedro

Not sure why one would need a shoe like this… I guess whatever road shoe that is stable and that doesn’t have exposed eva or plates would do the same job. Actually for door to trail I use older trail shoes (SG4) and they work really well - and it’s a way to extent their life when the grip is not good enough to the mountains but the midsole is still fine.

I was really excited to try the Peg Trail 4, hoping to run road and up to moderately technical trails. But more trails than road. Unfortunately, the lack of stability was a problem for me. Too much cushion with too high drop. I felt like I was losing energy just walking on pavement, and felt worried about rolling my ankles on rooty trails.
