2112 please!
Done!
Nobody can beat them in concert! They display perfection every time they perform.
I remember hearing this song and being drawn in by the music and catchy "pop" feel. After hearing it several time I got my hands on the lyric sheet and was blown away by the depth of this song. Especially the bridge:
"Each of us, a cell of awareness, imperfect and incomplete
Genetic blends with uncertain ends on a fortune hunt that's far too fleet"
That's when I began to understand these guys were geniuses. Rush was leagues ahead of every other band of their era, in my opinion.
The part of Alex’s solo that is so incredible is when he alternates between the solo and rhythm guitar repeating the change twice more flawlessly! That is master level talent!
This is my favorite Rush song. “If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.” Lots of great lyrics.
Freewill is incredible. It's the song that made me realize that the thoughts I was having as a teenager that religion was utter b.s. were justified. Music & lyrics are just amazing.
Now that same religion is threatening freedom/Democracy in America. It has become weaponized and Cult like. Neil called out the cruelty/hypocrisy of Republicans many times. He saw all of this crazy shit we are living coming from a mile away.
Every Rush fan in the world loves the line," if you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice." It just makes you look at things differently, open up to a different perspective, maybe even think a little differently. LOVE!!! this song!
So much excellence in this song. One of my many favorite things about Rush is that the drums are consistently part of the entire melody of a song, not just a timekeeper or filler. Enjoyed this reaction.
Freewill, great song. Great message. Blaming outside actors or imagined foes for "misfortune" is not helpful. Worse is subjugating others in the name of said outside actors (although it is the driving force behind most of human history). Better to rely on your own wits and realize that we are all just neutrons and electrons bouncing around in infinite space. Life is what you make of it. Choose to be a good person of your own freewill.
Neil knew of and wrote often in his books about the cruelty/ hypocrisy of organized religion/Republican Party and now we are living it. Tens of millions worshipping an evil Cult leader. Christian Fascism threatening to take over America. Neil saw it coming from a mile away. How I wish he was still with us to get his views in this all time dangerous time for America.
So we'll said!
Well
" Blaming outside actors or imagined foes for "misfortune""
Yep... like "Misogyny" & "The Patriarchy".
And even conservatives have them: Immigrants ... oh "and infidels"(a lyric from Rush's Witch Hunt). Another line... " dangerous ... In our theaters and bookstore shelves"
This song is iIN. SANE. I remember when it first came out, I heard it coming over my Mom's little radio in the kitchen. I was waiting for my ride to school (Highschool) and all of the sudden Rush was on the radio! I couldn't believe that Rush FINALLY made it on the radio! Permanent Waves was a really well-received album with 2-3 hit songs, Spirit of Radio, Freewill and Entre Nous! They had not had that much air-play previously and I was so stoked! But that song pretty much blew up that little radio in the kitchen and I was bouncing off the walls with excitement! That lead section is monster!
Awesome memory Michael thanks for sharing
This whole album is incredible. Neil's lyrics are timeless.
💯%
I think it's incredible what these three artists were able to accomplish. Neil Pert was not only an extraordinary drummer, he was also a great songwriter.
I had this on 8 track. I put this on before I went to bed at night and it would play all night long. Permanent Waves was my lullaby music in the 9th grade. It still never ages.
My (shared) favorite Rush song ever....but then I'll listen to 'Xanadu' and then it's just whatever I like more at the moment, or something like that.....lol early Rush is incomparable to anyone or anything played from the time, and It's all there to enjoy for eternity...we should be thankful for that 🙏
Yes- always have lyrics pulled up too! Neil's writing is poetry. "Genetic blends with uncertain ends on a fortune hunt that's far too fleet". Yep, that's us.
I was 13 when this song was released and I remember reading the lyric sheet and the line you mentioned just blew me away. It was the first time a song lyric really made me stop and think. Neil's writing was so profound on so many different levels.
@@johnmcafee6140 I've been reading his books too. I'm just finishing Ghost Rider.
the bass in this is sick, and man what a catchy song
The time signature changes are cool. It has the notable 4/4 and then tosses in 3/4 at times. And 12/8 during the solo. So cool and unexpected.
Saw Rush four times in my life, I was awestruck every. single. time.
I love RUSH 100% My favorite band & there one of my biggest inspirations for the music i make & there from Toronto Canada were I'm from
Another great reaction. My most favorite quote from a song: “If you choose not to to decide, you still have made a choice”!!!
This is a top 15 Rush song for me, it never gets old after 1000+ listens through the years.👍🔥🎧
All 3 of them are absolutely on fire in this song.
I don't know if you can even call this a solo when the guitar, the bass and the drums are all going wild at the same time.
KIZZ loved touring with them as openers. They always did a good opening show and were always prepared.
Gene Simmons tells that they were the nerds of rock.
While he and his band were partying, he would poke his head in to invite the three, and they would be reading or writing, or just working up new music.
They never accepted. Just turned him down politely.
I love your reaction to Rush as it reminds me when I first started listening to them 40 years ago and how I felt.I still get the same feeling and reactions within myself.Rush is Timeless.
Absolutely my favorite lyric of all time” if you choose not to decide you still have made a choice“
The theme of the song is about the folly of determinism and the reality of man being a freewill agent who is responsible for his actions and behaviors and the consequences (good or bad) that come with them. This is probably my favorite song by Rush lyrically and one of my top 10 musically! Loved your reaction and seeing the utter joy when you experienced this masterpiece!!!
Can't wait to see your reaction to YYZ Live in Rio or Neil Peart's drum solo live in Frankfurt.
I heard them say that it was about politics which makes sense also. It has a lot of religious imagery but I remember them saying it was not religious (or anti-religious). But that was some time ago.
@@carlpeterson8182 Politics is actually a philosophical discipline. It describes the "force" necessary to compel an individual to action based on a particular assumption. So, if a person is truly a freewill agent, then the only force needed to motivate him to action is himself, ie. self-government.
I have fallen in love with reaction videos, because you guys have reminded me why I fell in love with these songs the first time I heard them. It really brings some of us back in time.... One cool thing that I love about Rush is how they can all be jamming at the same time, and yet no one is stepping on each other's toes. It all works together. Nice reaction as always.
These 3 musicians are on another level from other artists.
All that rock and roll emotion, and it's only three guys. R.I.P. Neal Peart, Such deep, and thought-provoking lyrics. thanx. You too Alex and Getty
This is the RUSH that will bring tears of happiness
Arguably the best bridge/solo section ever written!
Neil was such a profound lyricist. Also a very good writer. I highly suggest you pick up a copy of Ghost Rider and just read it. It will open up your soul to how Neil was feeling when his first wife and daughter passed away. Truly a heartfelt piece of literature. Neil was as great a writer as he was a musician. He had so many talents. It's a shame the world lost him so early.
I really love watching you discover Rush, it's priceless!! There a band like no other. I've seen them 4 times live and rvery performance is perfect, they never screw up!! Interesting tidbit of info not many people know, after the concert Neil head straight to the limo and passes out after every concert! We jumped the wall after a concert and met them but didn't get to talk to Neil and that's what we were told he does!!
One of the few groups that actually does a TRIPLE solo and the same time!!!! Guitar, Bass, and Drums.......
SalvoG I love your reactions to Rush.... I've seen the 17 times live in concert. Every time you see then live you appreciate them more. I'm sorry you never got to see them while Neil was still alive. Guaranteed It would change your musical life forever. I just appreciate your commentary and that your are such a fan of this fantastic and beyond it's time music. They changed my musical life after the first time I saw them live in 1976. Rock on! I love your channel and can't wait to see what you react to next!
There are some lines, some lyrics, that transcend their medium. "If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice." I've quoted that line to people in SO many situations...
one of my all-time favorite rush songs.
It's in my top 3 favorite Rush songs. La Villa Strangiato live in Rio next will rock your world if you dare
10:54 these very hight notes are awesome! What a voice!!!!
Thanks for a great and natural reaction, I'm a RUSH fan till 1980. Freewill Is one of My favorite song, really love you're reactions because there's no edition. Thanks again for teach yo the younger the master pieces of the best three guys band. Thanks again SalvoG
One of their best albums
My favourite Rush song!!!!! Lyrics and all. Amazing
best instrumental ever made right there
RUSH 😅Love,Love,Love this song Freewill your show is amazing 🎉Thank you for singing and jamming out to one of my very favorite Bands ever! ❤ Can you please play 2112 you'll love it🥰🤘🤘God Bless ❤
When I first heard that bridge with the insane breakdown 40 years ago from a cassette tape in my new boom box while laying on my bed in my dorm at Lackland Air Force Base Texas, this 19 year old had the same reaction you just had! These guys were on a higher level completely! I was a sold-out Rush fan from that moment on.
Have to agree. I love the lyrics of this song. It's what makes it one of my personal favourites. I love Permanent Waves as an album
Great reaction and this song just gets better with time. The more I relisten with fresh ears as new music is discovered by others the more outstanding the music gets. This song is a masterpiece no doubt! I get really stupid over the last 60 seconds of Different Strings and have to keep looping it back. I wish it was 5 min longer of that last minuet!!
All three are spazzing
Always love seeing someone appreciate music from when i was a teen!!!
The video was from the Exit Stage Left DVD. But the music was the studio version. Strange. Anyway, the song is basically my religion described in a nutshell. I love that line "if you choose not to decide you still have made a choice."
Immersed in this iconic song is perhaps the finest three part syncopation in the rock canon(8:50 mark).
Lyrics = transcendental
Music = R.U.S.H
Awesome tune!
I've always sorta wondered what Pentatonix could do with a real Rock anthem, I mean other than Bohemian Rhapsody which is really it's own thing, and Born to Be Wild from the Sing Off. This would be a great selection to find out. Rush is the highest possible caliber of intelligent musicians, so I think they'd have fun. And also, Geddy Lee at his highest register? Yes, please!
This received a fair amount of airplay in the Toronto area. Not as much as Spirit of Radio, but way more than any of the other songs from Permanent Waves.
😂 I wore this 45' out. 🤔 I have a ton of Rush 45's. 🥰🐰
I remember staying up late to see this concert played in its entirety on MTV when I was in jr high................. it blew me away and my first 'real' concert was the Subdivisions tour a couple of years later................
The first time i saw this was probably 1983 or 1984. It was the end of the school year and my history teacher allowed one of my nerdy friends to play a vhs tape during the last days of school. I was aware of Rush but i had no idea how good they were. Anyway, this song and video were playing and i was in absolute awe. I noticed that many of my classmates were engaged in conversation, totally oblivious to the genius i was experiencing. As the years went by, i noticed that Certain people cant hear or appreciate the greatness of Rush. That's ok. Enough people do.
The solo here and in La Villa Strangiato are my favorite two solo parts in Rush songs. I do not know if the one here is really just a solo since all 3 go crazy. What makes it so special is how Geddy's bass and Alex's guitar interweave so well. Neil is great also but I always cannot believe how tight the weaving of guitar and bass goes back and forth. It is epic.
I really enjoy your interactions with the music. I really dig your passion for the music.
It's the studio recording put to live video footage from Exit Stage Left which was a live performance.
my favorite alex lifeson solo. he was absolutely shredding !
Yes, the guys would all solo at the same time and it would sound phenomenal! One of my favourite solos by Alex.
Headlong Flight is another banger with a soaring solo.
Cheers
Man what a great album.
Probably my favorite RUSH song.
That solo section is just completely sick.
Just another EPIC song from a truly EPIC band, they are imho unequalled in their brilliance.
Out of all the hundreds of RUSH reactions out there, this song isn’t reacted to enough. There are like 5.
This is my all time favorite Rush song. Love everything about it. Good choice here!
LOL that solo
Ok, Rush is the only band I know that can have 3 solo’s going on at once and it make absolute sense!
Yeah, for Rush, a “guitar solo” means a 3-way musical explosion!
Thank you for sharing your reaction. Lyrics are quintessential, or you only get cheated. Neil's lyrics are deserving of full attention. As well as the trio of goats master class musicianship.
Of course, this solo break LIVE is up several notches as well.
yes! all 3 of them solo the shit out of it :)
Hard to play favorites, but one of their best songs.
This is a fantastic song by a phenomenal 3 man band. I use to hear others talk about 'ZZ Top' and how their sound was like listening to a larger band and I'm like "Yeah, their cool, but, Rush puts out more sound than they do." Seriously, they're just incredible! If you haven't yet, try to listen to "2112". Thanks for another awesome reaction!
Wait til you hear their swan song album Clockwork Angels. Permanent Waves will always have my heart tho. Right time, right age.
i remember learning this and the stuff under the lead break is where i normally get a break ( i play bass ) but because theres only 3 of them , Mr Lee gets to ruin my fingers, filling the entire audio spectrum with awesomeness
i forgive him because YYZ
so glad you like all this old stuff..
off topic..
i watched a reaction to laurel and hardy by someone who didnt know who they were
i was unaware you could have that as a thing
That was just freakin awesome !! 😎 Awesome review !!
Dude your reactions are so awesome! You’re genuine and I dig it when you sing, it just shows how into it you are. No fake bs, just loving the music. Keep up the great work brother!
Salvo I love the parts where you sang along. SOunds like me!
Great Video their drummer was considered one of the best. Grew up with Rush but this song was one of my faves.
Natural science, lyrically, mind blowing...
Timeless perfection
In my top 5!
Imagine hearing them Live.
It's Rush - it got all the air play. Not as much as Tom Sawyer and Spirit of Radio, but it was a regular on the Classic Rock stations of the 80s.
It's cool that you truly appreciate the extraordinary skills these guys encompassed.
I will choose a path ,that's clear . I will choose Freewill
This is my all time favorite Rush song. Great pick.
All I remember from that concert is it was so so loud lol. I remember Head East was the opening act and I absolutely love their music too.
A great live version is on the Time Machine tour in Cleveland. Geddy and Neil's faces at the end of Alex's solo is priceless. Check it out!
your realy good at picking out sweet spots in the bands music..good ear for music
I sometimes forget just how frelling brilliant Rush is. Then I watch a reactor like yourself and rediscover all those things I’ve loved about them all over again. You put into words many of the things I’ve thought and felt while listening to them, but have never tried to articulate (which is a rarity for me, actually 😜). Thanks for that!
Yeah that’s a Rush staple for a reason. Imagine that actually performed live in near perfection. Only Rush my brother only Rush!🤘🖖✌️🎸🥁🎤🎹
I was waiting for you to wet yourself during the solo section of this, but "all three of them are spazzing right now" made me laugh out loud.
Fantastic reaction!!!!!
This song is amazing 😍
Great reaction ☺️
Ok, 🤗 take 2.... 4th, I hope you react to Closer to The Heart Live! For the "longer version jam" and the pics 😏 that make us ALL feel old! 🤭🐰
One of the hardest things with this songs is the markings with the constant time changes…..
