They're called bulb pans. I got mine from a commercial supplier but I know you can buy them on the various online shopping sites. Just search for "bulb pans". Hope that helps!
@@ScottTheExperimentalist It depends on how big I want the finished tree to be. They come in 6, 8, 10 and 12 inch size. So some trees that will become shohin may never get out of a six inch pot whereas I may step a tree up if I want a larger finished product. If I really want to crank up the growth of a tree I'll plant it in the ground for a couple of years (or more). You have to decide on the dimension of the finished tree and go from there.
Do you mind expanding more on pre-bonsai grow mix soil versus in the bonsai pot soil? My intent is to run a slightly “wetter mix” so I only have to water every other day except in the summer. Also so trees can survive any travel I might do and the kids forget to water.
As you can see from this mix, it's all organic. Typical bonsai soil has no organic component and is usually some mix of lava rock, pumice, calcined clay, gravel, etc. So adding some organic matter will usually help with water retention. However, this is not a hard and fast rule. There are so many factors, the size of tree, the exposure, the temp, the length of time it's been in the same pot, and on and on. You can only really learn by your own experience. Once you get to know your trees you'll know which ones need more water and which need less. It's really only trial and error. There simply is no "one size fits all" in bonsai.
Where do you get those green pots? The look like the perfect size for growing
