Out of sight out of mind. I was always told if you can't see your guitar because it's in the case you're less likely to pick it up and play it, meaning most people will spend more time practicing if it's less of a hassle to take it out.
I live by myself and having the guitar next to me is perfectly acceptable. It's an acoustic, not plugged in. In all honestly, it really just depends on the person, the environment, etc. Having the guitar next to me forces my brain to see it and then I pick it up and practice daily. I don't think this advice is a one size fits all, good advice. One needs to be aware of their own unique situation. I have to do what works for me, and if the guitar is in its case, it's out of sight, out of mind and that is not conducive to making practice a consistent, regular activity.
I have a 1960 J-45 which I keep in a hard shell case but I have a new Taylor GS mini that I keep on a stand. I need to have a guitar readily available at all times. I just don’t want to ever have a situation where I miss a few days of playing because I don’t feel like getting it out of the case. Seems kinda lazy on my part I know, but you guys know what I’m talking about. Also the fact that it’s a less expensive and easily replaceable Taylor mini allows me to be less nervous about it. p.s. If anyone’s wondering The GS mini is fun inexpensive guitar to play. Nothing like my Gibson but I definitely recommend it. p.s.s. Always! Store your guitar on a guitar stand. Unless you have kids, dogs, or alcoholics (or you store it in a hallway) ,no one is going to knock it over. Make sure you have a humidity controlled room if it is acoustic or semi acoustic. The benefit is that because you can just pick it up you’ll play more. Whereas is you store it in a case all of the time it’s often too much effort to get it out and you’ll play less.
I actually kind of like the mismatch - gives Brandon's guitar a subtle touch of Art Deco aesthetic, without any negative effects whatever on the guitar's tone. Also, it's an easily reversible alteration so it doesn't affect the guitar's value. In other words - doesn't seem like anything to get hung up about.

I pretty much agree with you. Aside being lazy there is no legit reason not to be extra cautious with your guitar particularly expensive ones. At the very least you can nick your guitar accidentally as many of us have.

As for me, I make a point of not owning very valuble instruments, as long as they play and sound relatively well for not so much expense so that I don't have to care more about them than my own enjoyment of playing them. I use common sense in care, still if blemishes or inconsistences occur, and they will inevitably, as long as my goal of playing is acheived, so what. As for that guy who thinks a different color bridge pin is important, he probably doesn't care about playing as much as appearence. Keep well and happy, John.
I bought an old 80s guitar from a garage sale , paid $50 for it. Had a missing bridge , nut , rusted tuning keys , scratch plate peeling off it. I cleaned it up .. put a floating bridge and new nut on it. Took the keys off and cleaned the rust and grime off them. Its tore up inside but it plays ok , sounds pretty good for what it is and how much it cost. It's a gem. I've learned a few new songs and have much more enjoyment from playing it tha I have on an " expensive " guitar.
My Eastman E1D lives in the corner on a stand. My Yamaha fs820 hangs on the wall. If I bought an expensive guitar I'd follow your advice, but the instrument would not get played as much as it should. I'm a little often player. Totally agree on the capo. If you're not playing, they are not doing the instrument any good.
Yep, personally, that's why my least expensive guitar gets played the most. I keep my nicer stuff in cases and the cheap Alvarez out hanging on the wall. A lot of times I'm lazy and don't want to get the nicer ones out sadly, but it also means it is like falling in love again when I do bust the nicer ones out. I agree with you, for most people keeping a guitar out is the best way to make sure they actually play. Can't tell you how much faster I learn things by just having a guitar out to quickly work on a riff or whatever for 2 minutes between other tasks.
Always use alkaline batteries in your guitar are any electronics as they dont leak acid when they get old or better yet take the battery out loosen the strings when storing I the case for a long time
Not using stands becuause people might bump into it is just no worry for me, I never let people inside. I only have a soft case for the acoustic, didn't get any hard case when I got it 20 years ago. Damn was that already 20 years ago now...
I've owned Gtars for 40 years - I never take the strap on/ off constantly - I park my Gtars in the stand or hanging on the wall .I Use the case for transport- I don't abuse or misuse them ... When company I don't trust comes around I take them to there safe place . Good advice on the capo - thanks 👍
It's so hard to refrain from using a guitar stand because of the hassle of putting the guitar in and out of the case. When I feel like playing spontaneously oh, I like to have the guitar ready to go. I live near the Pacific Ocean so low humidity is not a factor. Also I sent you an email asking how many beats per minute you're beginning shady Grove video is. Could you answer that?
I am like that as well, when I want to play then I have to have it ready right away, getting it out of a case isn't much work, but something happens during that short time, the feeling disappears fast, most of the time
Good information! Thanks! No argument here, but I just had a guitar playing family tell me ,if you store a guitar in it's case, you should have a humidifier or a damp cloth in the case so the wood doesn't get to dry and crack. Is this a valid point? Thanks again!
I use to hang my guitars on the wall - no more ! - i have gas heat - it maid my guitar yuckie -the gas heat all most ruined my guitars - no more -i keep my guitars in long pillow cases -easy to wash an dry keeps them from having Dust on them to -pick every day at least 15-30 min
Very good information for anyone, I liked the last one as not many people realise that with modern electro acoustics, the socket has a built in on off function to save battery life. I made that mistake many times before realising that I should pull the cable to save the battery.
Most expert Luthiers Say leave them stringed up and tuned. That's what adjustment rods are for. If you take the slack off then the guitar can warp back the other direction and that creates different issues all together. My advice, talk to your local repair shop and get their take or call a reputable company like Sweetwater Sound and ask to speak to a guitar tech for advice. :)
I kept my guitar for 5 years tuned in it's case and it's fine, still in tune but strings feel very tense to a point the it won't bend and hurts, any suggestions
Take the guitar out of the case and put it in a stand. Pick it up and play it every chance you get! You may have to tune it more often, and god forbid, change the strings occasionally, but the bends will hurt less.

Yep, I have the stand right next to the recliner, but at night the guitar goes back in the case. Also in the case when the grandkids show up. Keep my instruments in 35 to 40 humidty...my wet room. Thanks Brandon.
Some of these are good, but number 2 and number 3 are ridiculous. Point number 2 should just be "Be aware of your surroundings when you pick up or put down your guitar". It doesn't matter if it is above you, beside you, or behind you. Point number 3 is completely personal preference. Just because you don't like using a guitar stand doesn't make it a hard and fast rule for everyone. There is no physical or structural reason to not use a guitar stand. It will not harm your guitar in any way to use one.
Some guitar stands are bad. The back of your instrument can suffer a reaction with the rubber type material. I saw a guitar auction that had a soft cloth behind every single guitar as they lay cradled in their stands in order not to suffer a reaction.
I would also like to add 5 more things you should never do with. Never take a shower with guitar. The water will ruin it.. number 2. Never use your guitar as a hammer. It was never intended for driving nails. Number 3. Never put your guitar in the oven.
You talk about never for acoustic guitars then site an example horror story with an electric. Firstly 70s Gibsons are notorious for being bad quality and having neck breaks. Secondly I would never “Store” an electric guitar plugged in but that is about how to store on a stand rather than “never store on a stand”.

pretty much broke every one of those rules...acoustic sounds like shit now as i have left on the stand for years...i play it all the time and its easy to just grab and play that way..but i didn't know.
Do not prop your guitar up against a wall,duh... do not leave your guitar in a burning hot car in summer,or cold in winter duh.... do not fail to keep your instrument at the prescribed humidity level. Do not leave your guitar unattended at gigs or large unfamiliar gatherings. Never pick up your guitar case on the fly without making shure it is latched down.

Having 11 of my guitars out on stands is a good thing toward helping me practice 4 to 5 hours each day. (I humidify the whole room.)

And the other thing you should never do is replace a bridge pin with a mismatch color like this guy does on his Martin guitar.

I hang my guitars on my wall so that they are accessible and looks cool, just need to learn how to play. Keep up the good work

Use a adjustable tension capo so you just using enough pressure on the strings to do the job
